You need to become obsessed and fight like crazy to get to page #1 of Google for SEO service related keywords in your geographical area. Usually, the best keyword to target customers is “SEO” + your city. In other words, if you’re starting an SEO company in Albany, New York, you should target “SEO Albany”. I’m sure some of you are getting worried right now because you live in big cities where other SEO companies dominate the first page of Google. Stop worrying. While you’re fighting your way to page #1 of Google for a very competitive keyword, target low hanging fruit like “SEO services Albany”, “seo company Albany NY”, or “Albany SEO company”. The trick is that you have to be on Page #1 for something. This will you credibility when it’s time to close the deal. Not only will potential customers find you, but in sales meetings you can also point that your SEO business is on the top of page #1 of Google for “SEO company in Albany”. Your potential customers have no idea which keywords are the hardest keywords to target in SEO; being on page #1 among and ahead of your SEO competitors will impress the heck out of potential customers. I can’t even count the number of customers who told me they purchased our services because we were on the top of page #1 of Google, ahead of our SEO competitors.

Pre filled standing orders – I always have standing order forms filled out and ready in case that’s the client’s preferred method payment. All that is required is the business owner to enter his details on it and then I can simply leave it with them to hand in at their bank once completed.

JFK’s quote, “Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable.” seems apropos here. The “violence” is the efforts of blackhat SEOs and advertisers to take back their share of what was lost through whatever methods they can use to circumvent Google’s guidelines.
Thank you for your post, it made for a very interesting and well worthy read. I am from the UK and going for a second job interview with a local SEO company very soon. One of the tasks in my interview is to present to them how I will drive new business for their company. They currently only work from referrals but want to rapidly expand their client base. I have been studying my socks off learn all I can about SEO and how to drive business. The main way, I can think of personally, would be to cold call local businesses. Now I understand that if we ‘were that good an SEO company then we shouldn’t have to cold call’, but my argument is that we would just be using any advantage we can in order to develop our business. They already use Twitter and Facebook and go to shows and seminars etc. Do you think cold calling would be a useful way to drive business into an already reasonably well established SEO organisation? If not, do you have any more advice on how I could do this. I am determined to get this job and any constructive advice from anyone would be greatly appreciative…
You can find a bunch of technical issues with your site, but if the company is removing the content completely, not selling that product in the future or moving into something new, fixing those old technical issues could be a waste of time and resources.
Recommend the website you want to rank well in search results by giving it a +1, sharing the website on your profile and/or page as a status update, and linking to it in your profile information under recommended websites.

Organic Links – These are links you don’t have to ask for, and they are the best kind. Especially if you can get them on sites with high authority such as major news outlets and other well-recognized name websites.
I had this philosophy from day one because I got burnt by paying other SEO agencies. They took all of my money and didn’t provide much in return. Best part to me was defiantly making sure to have more than one revenue stream. Doing so can be challenging to those who are just starting out. That being said, once you understand the 3-7 or so different ways any blogger or SEO company can make income, you’ll be so glad you took the time to implement them from the beginning.
Note: This clause shouldn’t be mandatory. Let your customers remove it if they want. However, many won’t care. You can also use it as leverage. If you’re having a ton of success with a client, offer free or discounted services if you can add your link to their site.

Great post. Most of my SEO clients come from referrals and they are converted from leads to clients by, as you say “giving away the farm” (I like to call it consultative selling). Once they see what can be done its a no brainer. I now need to get some bigger clients to turn my agency from 6 figure to a 7 figures.
