The SEO approach for smaller businesses needs to be about a lot more than just SEO, it needs to be more about SEM – with strong emphasis on the “M” (arketing) in order to avoid the fate outlined in the link above. Google looks deficient if people can’t find the big brand names, but few will notice if a small, generic operator falls out of the index as another relative unknown will take their place.
With this kind of investment and ongoing costs, seeking an SEO business for sale and going that route starts to make a lot of sense as an option. When you buy an established SEO business, at least there is a local track record and (presumably) some existing SEO equity in the business. In a franchise relationship, you are buying into the strength and recognition of the existing franchise brand – and with Internet marketing franchises, there aren’t any with strong brand recognition. And if you’re not buying into a brand, then what are you paying for?
However SEO Consulting Business is entirely performance-oriented service. You have to be dedicated and perform as per client needs. This was a great post, thanks for sharing it. I have been researching a lot lately about SEO regarding education resources and what have you. I understand that it can be as broad or as specific as you would like. I am really trying to develop a plan on what to study and would appreciate your advice. As of now, I am teaching myself by means of free education resources on these topics; SEM, SEO, marketing in general, html coding, and website design. I plan on offering services relative to those topics as a sole freelancer and wasn’t sure if there is anything to delve deeply into that would better my understanding. If you could suggest any other topics you think would be of great help, or any education resources, whether they are free or come at a price, it would be greatly appreciated.
Be sure to add your business details to all local and major national online business directories. These listings are not only good for taking advantage of the traffic on these directory sties but the listings also act as good citations to help boost your Google Places/Maps listing in the search engines.
From reading sites like Search Engine Watch and SEObook, I started getting the hang of SEO. I made on-page changes to my own site, and learned how to build links by talking to people like Patrick Gavin on a weekly basis.
It seems that this strategy relies on the theory that there are limits to DIY and by providing DIY answers, your potential leads will come to not only respect your brand, but come to an understanding of their own limitations internally. A photo taken by someone who doesn’t do it every day will never be as quality as product photographed by a us, a company that shoots products daily and the same goes for SEO.
Social Media Marketing (covers creating fresh, compelling content and drawing followers [and the ultimate goal, sales] via many online venues, such Facebook, Twitter, Google+, LinkedIn, YouTube, Flickr, FourSquare, Pinterest, and many more)
Louisa, if you have the resources in house then you should definitely do it in-house. However, most companies do not have the resources which is why they outsource to other companies. It all depends on what you feel comfortable doing. In my experience the best agencies will do better than any in-house entity. Primarily because their main focus is SEO.
The good news is you don’t have to guess! Google has a keyword planner tool that provides search volume for queries, as well as a suggestions feature to provide insight into different keyword variations. This is extremely useful when deciding whether “tacos” or “meat with a tortilla folded around it” is searched for more frequently, as a search engine’s index treats the queries separately. Using these keywords naturally throughout your site builds relevancy and helps search engines understand what your site is about.
Stop looking for loopholes and strategies to beat the Google. The algorithm changes too quickly to capitalize on loopholes. You’re much better off creating good long-term value for your clients. Play for the long term by providing value and focusing on user experience above all else.
Final point here: lean on your network. reach out to those you know when a problem stumps you. Just be sure to record the answer for later reference when you hit the same problem again with another client.
Before you can start getting clients, you need to decide how you are going to accept payments from them. I personally just invoice my clients at the end of every month for the SEO work done. Now, some of you may be thinking; “OMG! But what if they don’t pay!?”.
When my first venture failed, I decided I was going to quit entrepreneurship, get a college degree like everyone else, and get a job after graduation. To get a head start on things, I started taking college classes while I was in high school.
The two brothers, Google and Facebook, are also limiting useful information that SEO’s use to create their strategies (e.g. Keywords: Not Provided or Google Keyword Planner doesn’t show phrase match data anymore, etc).
You’ve probably been asked “how do you go about SEO?” I start by telling clients I follow Google’s local search ranking factors to make sure their core SEO elements are in place (people love that). You can break this down into Google My Business, citations, reviews, and geo-targeted landing pages (on-page SEO). Then I ask them a couple questions about whether they need help in these areas. I’d say 80% of people end up working with me when I use this sales approach.
In this weak and unstable economy it is really hard to reasonably project out 5 years on a life changing decision. There are so many variables to take into account that it’s difficult to give a tailored answer to each situation.
This tactic still may not work for some partners, but it will work for many, and the partnership will then be much more valuable in their eyes than simply “having to give up link juice” without any apparent benefit to them.
Once you have joined these groups and been accepted (some require a moderator to approve you but not all), if you then click on the member list of the group, you will see that there is an option to private message each one of them. It’s not uncommon to find LinkedIn groups in your area with hundreds of business owners in them, the opportunities are endless!
Google Analytics – Use Google Analytics to learn more about the visitors to your website. In particular, monitor your organic search traffic sources to see what keywords people are using to find your website in search results. By setting up goals, you can see which keywords lead to visits where visitors do what you want them to do on your website such as sign up for a mailing list or purchase a product. This will help you learn what keywords you should be targeting with your SEO campaign.
“SEO isn’t the future, it’s the present. Anyone not doing this is already behind” – This is a favourite of mine. It is an absolutely true statement and also acts to instil a sense of urgency and fear in the client as if they do not act now they risk falling even further behind to their competitors.

You will now be fast approaching the part of the meeting where you either close this thing down and leave with a new client on board, or you will be leaving with another meeting, or worst case scenario, the client will need time to ‘think about it’.
Beyond the stuff we know got hit (some RIGHTLY so), we probably will never know the true ramifications with respect to how many “little guys” had their livelihoods or potential livelihoods destroyed by a heartless, unforgiving, and sometimes inaccurate algorithm.
