What other forms of advertising/marketing do they currently use?: This question is a good one for a few reasons. Firstly because it gives you an idea of the sort of money the business owner is already spending on advertising. Secondly, once the business owner has revealed what advertising they currently pay for, you can ask them if they are happy with the response they are getting from that advertising. In most cases you will find that the answer to that question is that they simply don’t know. This is where you can explain how they can track exactly how many more targeted visitors they will get to their website through your SEO used to work in the SEO department for a basement systems company and you have no idea how intricate a proper SEO company is. They owned a network of thousands of quality domains, blogs and websites whose sole purpose was to constantly build links back to the multiple business properties they owned. They had one main business but owned multiple domains to rank in different states and regions. Not to mention the managing of their anchor text, and conversion testing to see how a keyword would perform. The on page stuff is basic, the real value an SEO agency can provide now a days is a proper network of diverse high quality sites to provide links and knowing how to give those links and for what keywords.
Don’t make it too long. Search engines only display about 70 characters in a title tag. I say “about” because it’s technically measured in pixels. You can count pixels, right? No? Well, in that case, you’re best off using a snippet simulator like this one. It lets you see exactly how your website will look in a search result.

Additionally, many social media platforms, like Hootsuite and Tiny Torch, allow you to monitor and get alerts any time your brand is mentioned. Whenever a review is left about your business, positive or negative, be sure to respond to it. That shows other people reading the reviews that you, the business owner, care what your customers think.
NOTE: When I first started in this business, I had absolutely no experience of face to face selling. However, after landing only my second meeting using the techniques I’ve already explained in the guide so far, I managed to secure my first client in only my second meeting with a business owner… And it was a deal worth £2,000 (~US$3,200) per month!
I am just starting out and am having a lot of interest shown in my assistance, but since I don’t have case studies to base my value proposition off of, I am getting some pushback and had a recent proposition. An E-commerce site suggested that I provide them with SEO. They are currently averaging 250 conversions a day at $5-$8 per sale (a decal company). They said that they would pay me 20% of any increase in business I could bring in. I need to put food on the table for my family. I’ll work hard on getting other clients, but is this a good endeavor to go after? Where would you start with getting them more site traffic quickly? I will use all your info from Marketing school to build Funnels and Retarget them if they leave, but where would you start on-site.
Thank you for the comment and that’s awesome to hear! YES, do not waste your time with those clients. Your business should make you happy and you should want to get up and work on it everyday. If any client is making you feel otherwise, then they definitely need to be “SACKED” lol
The only way you can reach potential clients is to market your services. In my own opinion, the best way to market your local SEO service is to use SEO itself. Getting your website to rank highly for your target keywords; those keywords that clients use to search for businesses like yours is a telling proof that you are skilled enough to help other businesses with their SEO needs, too.
Absolutely fantastic post, excellent information, exactly the information I was looking for. I got interested in seo when promoting an old business. We got stung by a very poor company. I have been learning a bit about seo and started to get some page one ranks. I would love to set up an seo company to help others.
If the thought of coding freaks you out, you can also use Google’s Data Highlighter to mark up content with your mouse. (Note that your website will need to be set up with Google Search Console in order for this to work.)
Solid advice you’re serving here, based on my own experience. I’d like to add a couple of thoughts. First, I think it’s important to reiterate the need to stay current. You simply cannot fall asleep at the wheel and continue to sustain a career. Second, as a generalist, I think you need to maintain a broad knowledge of the best tools and resources available for the job. SEO’s are excellent about sharing that information too, it’s just you can spend a lot of time wading in the mud before you look up and see that clear sky above you.
I truly belive the assistant should be your first hire. You are the most valuable person in your company and you always will be. Your time is priceless, literally. What you’re going to find out is that 80% of your time is going to be bogged down by B.S. admin work that anyone can do. Following up, contracts, emailing customers, being on the phone and much more that you probably don’t even realize.
If you can afford it, you should also invest in attending an SEO conference or two. I have found that SEO conferences are a great way to learn tons of new information (it comes fast and furious, akin to drinking from a fire hose!). You’ll also get to see (and if you have the gumption, meet) the experts in this field. And, in addition to that, conferences are great venues for career networking (I can personally attest to that).
Take time to price your services, or mention your price when a client contacts you. Pricing your services at the higher cost at the start of the business is the bad practice as the customer will not show any interest in your services, so try to lower the rate. After your work is appreciated, you will get a brand name in society; then you can charge higher rates if required.
If you are new to the profession altogether and need to learn SEO, two courses to consider are DistilledU and the Google Analytics Individual Qualification. Completing both certifications should take under 90 hours.
