CONTENT CREATION – Only create great content that provides real value and is better than what’s currently already out there. Google your competition, see what type of content they have, then create something better and be sure to include stats and visuals when possible.
Blogging – consistently blog about SEO, social media marketing, conversion optimization and content marketing. The more technical your blog posts are and the more often you use data to backup your points, the more leads you will get. For example, this post on how content length affects rankings and conversions drove 51 leads, while my post on don’t forget the marketing in content marketing only drove 18 leads. Both posts did well on the social web, but the one on content length contained more stats and data. In general, I’ve seen that posts with stats and data drive roughly three times more leads than posts that don’t contain any data or stats.

A lot of articles are either overly complex or somehow miss the basics. I always feel like if people have a good foundation to start with, they can add to it later vs. starting out missing the basics and having to make up for it later.
Making sure your solutions and product offerings are scalable. There are certain things that worked as an “employee” that simply don’t translate well when trying to open up your services to multiple companies.
95% of IM’ers have great relationships with clients who also advertise offline and with other people. Stop missing out on that cash and leverage into it. PM me if you are an established marketer and want to find out how.
It worked for us and once we were established, we started charging the going rate (our charges were one offs-not residual income) because people were able to see the work we did and would start asking us to quote. If we hadn’t of done that then we would never have been heard of.
Stop looking for loopholes and strategies to beat the Google. The algorithm changes too quickly to capitalize on loopholes. You’re much better off creating good long-term value for your clients. Play for the long term by providing value and focusing on user experience above all else.
With new online businesses and e-commerce sites popping up every day, starting an SEO business can be a great way to profit using your expertise in generating organic traffic and maximizing revenue potential.
Maintaining a website is also useful to know about your previous experiences, projects and all the other services you offer. Grab your visitor’s attention by writing fab service pages, with a free demo or free give away.
I agree with you that speaking at conference is effective and I will like to go in that direction. What is you don’t have access to conferences, what do you do? How can you get one going most in a rural area?
Google My Business (GMB) is considered a directory, but it’s a biggie, so it deserves its own section. It’s very important for local businesses to claim their Google My Business (and Bing Places for Business) page. It’s free and can get you incredible exposure if you’re optimized enough to show up in Google’s local three-pack:
Kathy, this is life for an agency SEO. When you can’t physically implement the changes you want to make on a client site, you still have something to offer — your knowledge. Depending on what a client wants or needs, you can create detailed reports on recommended changes the client can give to their webmaster/IT team. If the client site is simply a tragic mess that would be more trouble than its worth to optimize, you can either explain to the client what your service would entail in terms of time, you can pass on the business, or perhaps subcontract out to an expert in web design who can fix the spaghetti code!. Getting cakewalk clients will not be an everyday occurrence, unfortunately. Managing how you accept and decline clients is a big determining factor in how successful you’ll be as an independent SEO. You’re in good company. Welcome to the club!
So how is the quality of this data ensured? Through cross-referencing each data point across the world wide web. However, there are three major data brokers whose data powers the likes of Google, Bing, Yahoo, Apple and more when it comes to their small business listings, and they are:
First of all. Learn the basics of search engine optimization for Google. They’re still the biggest player in the cyberspace. Secondly, understand the market. Regardless of your niche you have to research and grasp:
CONTENT PROMOTION – With over a billion active websites and blogs online, there is already way too much content out there. Without the necessary content promotion, your site is just going to get lost in the mix. You need to continually promote your content to new audiences.
With affiliate programs once the visitor hits your site you make money right away. With a SEO agency once the prospective visitor hits your site you still have to sell them and then do the actual work.
All in all, you need to first have a strong background in SEO. Luckily I have been blogging and doing SEO for the past 6 years, so I know most of the basic principles and even little tips that help a website rank.
One of the problems with a crowded industry, like search marketing, is that generic, descriptive names won’t stand out. “Search Marketing Agency” may describe what you do, but such a name makes it difficult to differentiate yourself. A quirky name, like “RedFrog”, make be memorable, but may do little to convey what you’re about.
As simple as it may sound, but a lot of those strengths and weaknesses are not immediately clear and only become clear with experience and time and trying various things, which can take some years. Also, opportunities based on your strengths may not be readily available, so one needs to put focused effort in that direction. ex., I have realized by now that there are some things I am really good at, they come natural to me (to the point that I was taking them for granted), and they happen to be difficult for a lot of people/competitors. So I am now trying to focus on that.
It’s also important to get your business’s name, address and phone number (NAP) on the major citation data aggregators like Infogroup, Neustar (aka Localeze), Acxiom and Factual. Always make sure that your company’s NAP is consistent on as many of these directories and citation sites as possible. Discrepancies like misspellings, abbreviations, lack of suite number and wrong phone number can create havoc when Google can’t determine which information about your business is correct. If Google’s not sure, they may display incorrect information — or not show your business at all in search results.
