Dan Kennedy talks a bit about a preponderance of proof when you’re presenting yourself to your potential client. To build some credibility for yourself initially, evidence of sites you’ve ranked and results you’ve obtained will help a great deal when you’re selling SEO. You want to be able to show these to prospects, so they know you’re not, for lack of a better term, full of shit.
The good news is you don’t have to guess! Google has a keyword planner tool that provides search volume for queries, as well as a suggestions feature to provide insight into different keyword variations. This is extremely useful when deciding whether “tacos” or “meat with a tortilla folded around it” is searched for more frequently, as a search engine’s index treats the queries separately. Using these keywords naturally throughout your site builds relevancy and helps search engines understand what your site is about.
We will understand these three factors but before let’s look at the stats shared by MOZ – as per MOZ survey “ 4 billion desktop queries in United States are about local businesses, products or services”.
Speaking of price…You’ll also have a better idea as to how much your work is actually worth (what to charge) once you understand first-hand what it takes to successfully create and implement a strategy.

Love this very inspirational, I plan on building out my site as an seo/ webdesign blog, then using it as leverage to get a job for a bigger agency. Hopefully all the benefits of being an seo without the responsibility of being an business owner.
Lots of people want freebies, and I’ve been reluctant to give away too much…I will give clients a quick overview of their site/competitive environment as a way of justifying the need to hire an SEO agency; but I find that some have no intention of buying because they see this as a freebie and hope to get more freebies…I’m wondering how much one should ‘open the kimono’ during these early stages, and if one realizes that the company isn’t going to be a client, whether it is worthwhile to say: ‘Look, I’ll make you a deal, we’ll do x for you as a free service in return for allowing us to wear your logo on our site.’?
You may need to learn some web design or programming skills to help you understand and analyze HTML codes for problems. This is not compulsory however, as you can always hire a programmer to handle this aspect for your business.
Awesome article, perhaps the best one I have seen on this topic. I am final year businesss student in the UK and the article basically outlines what I aim to accomplish over the next five years or so. I was wondering what is the best way to get in touch with you if I want to ask you a bit more detailed question? Thanks again for taking the time to publish this.
Outside of being competent and getting results for your clients, the most important thing for a digital marketing agency to have is a pipeline of new clients. Client turnover happens… Every client isn’t the right fit for your agency, so not every client you start out with is going to stay with you forever. But, as long as you can consistently bring in a flow of clients, your business will be healthy.
4) The ability of your staff to Play and have Fun! The more they test, try and fail on your/their pet projects or affiliate sites… the better results and performance you deliver to your clients websites.
The problem is that self-employment, especially if you’ve worked in the corporate world before, has all the allure of the pipe dreams sold in The 4 Hour Work Week (I guess Tim Ferris doesn’t count self-promotion as work, even though he does it about 100 hours a week 🙂 ).
Good stuff as always Neil. Really appreciate the insight and strategies. Many of them are strategies we stumbled into and have implemented without the roadmap you outlined. Wish this post was made 5 years ago lol.
One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is to keep organized. As the clients begin to come in, files and resources can become extremely disorganized. The more organized you are the higher your quality and output will be.
As you are making your way through the steps of creating whatever it is you are intending to sell, consider logging the process. Create a manual along the way. A manual that is constantly revised as you learn faster, and better ways of doing things will be invaluable to your growth.
I make a very good living online using various methods which I am going to teach you how to do absolutely FREE! You convince a prospect to sign up to have you perform SEO services on their website to target 10 keywords. You previously checked the price that the SEO reseller company charges to optimise 10 keywords per month. In this example, let’s say that the SEO reseller company charges £250 (~US$400) for SEO services on 10 keywords per month.
The best place to hide a website is Page 2 of a google search result! Unless a company website finds itself on the first page of a search engine result, chances are very slim for it to get much viewers and customers.
How many projects are you working on right now? You may already have a few clients from your time as a freelance SEO, or you may be starting from scratch. Either way, you need to grow your market to start making money. Obtaining a leads list from a lead generation company gives you a head start.
And if all goes well and you decide to expand your little empire, you needn’t hire many employees then too. Outsourcing your SEO services to small and upcoming SEO businesses is an appealing option most other businesses don’t give you.
A common mistake with many SEO newbies is to focus solely on the technical aspects of SEO- keyword research and rank tracking, link building, and link profiling – with no real consideration of the quality of the content on your site and the natural flow, or how visitors take their journey through your site.
Moz’ Rand Fishkin carried out an interesting experiment with his Twitter followers to see the impact of a large increase in SERP CTR on search rankings. The results were pretty huge — he saw several position ranking increases in less than an hour!
If you have location or sell through the channel, get your locations or agents up on mobile geo-optimized landing pages and put inbound links from all the major social profile pages pointing to their profile page.
Whether you have literally only learnt the term SEO for the first time reading this article, you’re a beginner, intermediate or super star SEO practitioner, one sure fire way to get leads and enquiries from business owners actually coming in to YOU is to rank your own SEO website for high value SEO keywords.
I wouldn’t go in with the sole purpose of using your position to quickly build your brand and bolt. I’d go in with the purpose of working your butt off for someone who gave you a great opportunity and see what develops from that. Usually the latter will result in both sides being more than happy.
