I love this question. There are ample opportunities to learn about SEO for free because of the preponderance of information available and the willingness of SEOs to share their knowledge publicly. I strongly recommend that an SEO newbie read and reread both the Google SEO Starter Guide and the SEOmoz Beginner’s Guide to SEO documents.
The SEO approach for smaller businesses needs to be about a lot more than just SEO, it needs to be more about SEM – with strong emphasis on the “M” (arketing) in order to avoid the fate outlined in the link above. Google looks deficient if people can’t find the big brand names, but few will notice if a small, generic operator falls out of the index as another relative unknown will take their place.
Very nice post. Every business now has to be on the internet. And if You are on the internet – You need traffic. Your website is nothing without And if You are not making a lot of money via Your website – there is no other way to get traffic but the SEO. Adwords are just too expensive for low income websites. So thank You for showing us the points of SEO!
This is why I created MySiteAuditor. I had the exact same problem with my agency’s website. Our traffic was decent, but our conversions stunk! MySiteAuditor is a white-label, SEO audit tool that’s free for your visitors. It takes about 5 minutes to set up and add to your SEO company’s website. Just upload your logo, colors, and contact information, then easily embed MySiteAuditor’s SEO audit tool forms throughout your website… then wait for new SEO leads in your email inbox. Your visitors will love generating a free 9 page SEO audit of their website, as long as they enter their web address, a target keyword, and their email and phone number.
Don’t go away and build your website, buy all the necessary software and then just give up after a week because you’ve not had 100 people phoning you to arrange meetings. It’s going to take time and effort but eventually you CAN and WILL have a successful SEO business of your own… But… Only if you REALLY WANT to!
How many projects are you working on right now? You may already have a few clients from your time as a freelance SEO, or you may be starting from scratch. Either way, you need to grow your market to start making money. Obtaining a leads list from a lead generation company gives you a head start.
the difficult thing here is that when you start… then you are a startup as well. An established company does not want to work with you most of the time for the same reasons you want to work with them. Therefore you have to work with the B-players at first until you gain some momentum. Also it is very important to know your own value and price appropriately. But that is not when you start. When you start you work your ass off for nothing. Thats just the nature of things. It is dangereous to be too selective at the start in my experience. you need to eat shit before things begin to run your way
Consistency is key here. You need to ensure that you have your full NAP across your whole website (i.e. every page). Furthermore, you must use the exact same details/format when you mention your address on other websites (i.e. local citations).
Cashflow is by far the most important consideration. You can have customers lined up, they are buying what you have, they are placing more orders, but if you can’t meet your bills, then your business will crash. Consider what line of credit you may need in order to maintain cashflow.
After working for other people for so long, you might feel that 2018 is the right time to venture into the great unknown of self employment and entrepreneurship. While this is a laudable move, you need to be sure you are getting into the right industry, and that you have the right tools to succeed in it.
Please tell me you see the irony of finding an article about ‘how to do SEO’ ranking highly for the keywords “how to do SEO”, then complaining about the authority of the source creating and sharing that information.
Wow, what a great article, Rick! Great chart outlining the differences as well. And Rand’s advice is priceless. My own way of learning SEO was working for free! I’ve been learning, blogging and doing free SEO for about a year before I was able to formulate my own services and started providing them!
