3. “Advertise.” Seriously, that’s it! Once you have a website and an idea of how much you are going to charge people, you just need to tell people that you have a website and how much you are going to charge them! SEO is so easy, I don’t know why everybody doesn’t do it.
This is a huge business – what the hell is an SEO nowadays? In many ways SEO has become an umbrella term for online or digital marketing and many SEO’s will provide an overview of what the opportunities are online and how you can execute on them.
The last day of September in 2003 was almost like any other day. I woke up at 5:30 a.m., showered, got dressed, and began my one hour commute to work in my 1999 Honda Accord. An October study by CNNMoney and PayScale.com place marketing consultants, which include SEO specialists, as the second-best positions in the U.S. based on pay and industry growth. According to the survey, they comprise more than 282,000 jobs with a 41.2 percent growth rate over the past 10 years.

It’s also important to get your business’s name, address and phone number (NAP) on the major citation data aggregators like Infogroup, Neustar (aka Localeze), Acxiom and Factual. Always make sure that your company’s NAP is consistent on as many of these directories and citation sites as possible. Discrepancies like misspellings, abbreviations, lack of suite number and wrong phone number can create havoc when Google can’t determine which information about your business is correct. If Google’s not sure, they may display incorrect information — or not show your business at all in search results.
Another thing to keep in mind, beyond the health insurance, is that unless you start one there’s no retirement benefit, no paid vacation time, and no paid sick time. It is a really good idea to purchase short-term and long-term disability insurance for yourself as well.
Having tools at hand are handy to help you along but experience and making mistakes are all part of the learning process to run your own SEO business. I encourage all SEO’s to have their own learning sites, perhaps run a small businesses on the side to learn the finer mechanics of small business.

Citations (core online profiles) are both the #2 and #5 Google Map ranking factors. I always work with clients on Google My Business and Moz Local (since those are the most important profiles).
