Understanding the clients business processes is paramount to insure total clarity of goals and fulfilling business needs. So clients internal weaknesses can me eradicated as soon as possible and fortified.
Wonderful post Gary. I started a small web design company a few years ago and only recently started offering SEO services also. There are many small businesses that simply have no idea where to begin let alone have the time to learn about it. Inspirational post thanks.
Check out your top local competitors and see which categories they’re using. If you’re competing for the same customers in “real life,” you should be competing for the same online traffic. However, don’t assume that what your competitors chose to do for their site is necessarily right for your site; it’s just a starting point.
Now that you have a handle on your key concepts and have built a strategic keyword list, you’re ready to create a high-level plan for content creation. I say high-level because this will help inform your website user experience, the type of people you hire, and the kind of narrative, social, video, or other type of digital content you invest in.
The number of small businesses coming online is increasing rapidly. But unfortunately, most brick and mortar businesses are still offline. This is an avenue for you to make extra cash by convincing them to put their business online and educating them about free traffic / customers.
If you have happy clients who are getting leads from the traffic generated from your services, they will be more than happy to recommend you to the many business people in the area who they will network with regularly. There is no hotter lead than an introduced, recommended lead because the hard part of convincing them that you can be trusted has already been done!
Donna, yours are excellent additions to this post. My post, as lengthy as it was, really only scratched the surface of the topic. I totally agree with you — staying current is one of the hardest parts of the job. You could easily spend 8 hours a day reading blogs, Twitter feeds, and industry news, keeping up-to-date, but getting no work done at all. And knowing about which top-notch tools to use is an indispensable part of our work. Frankly, I am really excited about the new free SEO tools we are releasing here at IM Ninjas. Be sure to bookmark http://www.internetmarketingninjas.com/tools/ in your browser as I have. Thanks much for the contribution, Donna!
Some social medias are very popular now, like Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and Google+. Like Facebook, you can build the pages for the company or products, and you can communicate with the potential customers conveniently.
Those who work the system will *always* be able to find ways around issues (dynamic IP addresses, logging in from larger institutional networks that can’t easily be blocked, etc.) but it is the average person who gets screwed by Google’s draconian monopolistic “customer support is evil” ways. The problem for Google is this: “when innocence itself, is brought to the bar and condemned, especially to die, the subject will exclaim, it is immaterial to me whether I behave well or ill, for virtue itself is no security.” – John Adams
Moz’ Rand Fishkin carried out an interesting experiment with his Twitter followers to see the impact of a large increase in SERP CTR on search rankings. The results were pretty huge — he saw several position ranking increases in less than an hour!
I’ve also noticed that the more you communicate with the client, the longer they will stay with you. I know, this process may seem like a pain in the butt, but it’s harder to get new clients than it is to keep your current ones paying. So, cherish your clients.
Hopefully, people will want to set-up a legitimate SEO business and I would never encourage ‘dodgy’ activity. Having said that, I’m sure many will because it’s a way to cut corners, but that only results in cheating themselves because, as you say, these ‘dodgy’ methods don’t work.
“If you decide to work with us then you are the only [insert industry] we will be working with in [insert city/country/continent].” – Explain that while you have been in contact with other businesses in their niche/area/industry, if they subscribe to your SEO services, it will come with a guarantee that they will be the only organisation you work with in that niche/industry in that city/country/continent. Obviously amend this based on what sort of company you are pitching to, a local accountant for example will be slightly different to a multi-national company operating in numerous countries.
This was a great post, thanks for sharing it. I have been researching a lot lately about SEO regarding education resources and what have you. I understand that it can be as broad or as specific as you would like. I am really trying to develop a plan on what to study and would appreciate your advice. As of now, I am teaching myself by means of free education resources on these topics; SEM, SEO, marketing in general, html coding, and website design. I plan on offering services relative to those topics as a sole freelancer and wasn’t sure if there is anything to delve deeply into that would better my understanding. If you could suggest any other topics you think would be of great help, or any education resources, whether they are free or come at a price, it would be greatly appreciated.
Think about areas that are a pain for you in your current search marketing work. These areas are likely a pain for other people, too. If you can make these pain points easier, then that is worth money. The search community tends to be generous about getting the word out when truly useful tools and services spring up. The hard part is when more service providers enter a niche it becomes harder to maintain a sustained advantage in your feature set. As that happens, you need to focus on points of differentiation in your marketing strategy.
However, at no point should you be pushy with the client. Throughout the entire meeting I always give off the attitude of ‘I’m the expert in this, I have explained why you NEED this service and if you don’t decide to sign up to it, I’ve got a number of your competitors waiting to sign up should you turn this opportunity down’.
Local pack results are evaluated and ranked in a way that is similar to traditional organic results, but there are some important steps that need to be taken by business owners in order to optimize their site’s performance in local results. Here’s how to do exactly that.
What is your current position? What is your background? What is the purpose of your business? What is your competitive advantage? Who are your competitors? How will you exploit their weaknesses, and counter their strengths? How will you increase capability and capacity? How do you plan to grow?
What I also learned through this process is that though the majority of our customers were mid-sized businesses, they wanted to see all of the large Fortune 500 companies we worked with even though these customers themselves were nowhere that size. When we showed our potential clients all of the small and medium businesses we worked with versus only showing them large brands we worked with, our conversion rate of locking them in as a customer decreased by almost half.
You’re opinion is correct if you think people getting paid thousands of dollars to do fundamental SEO anyone could figure out in a week of research using Google is true. I’m sure this does happen or has happened.
Thank you for the comment and that’s awesome to hear! YES, do not waste your time with those clients. Your business should make you happy and you should want to get up and work on it everyday. If any client is making you feel otherwise, then they definitely need to be “SACKED” lol
I wrote a long, in-depth article about this already, so I will highlight the points here. Re-signing an SEO client is about 10 times cheaper than finding a new one, so I would really focus on this. There are five easy steps to re-signing an SEO client:
If you’re not sure how your title and meta description tags will look or how many characters you can get away with, try using an emulator like the one from SEOmofo or Yoast’s SEO Plugin for WordPress:
