The affiliate positions a site in the top ten results, gathers leads and traffic, and then sells them to someone else. The display advertiser publishes content in order to provide space for advertising, and typically makes money on the click-thrus.
When my first venture failed, I decided I was going to quit entrepreneurship, get a college degree like everyone else, and get a job after graduation. To get a head start on things, I started taking college classes while I was in high school.
People love to brag about new companies they are working with. It’s a good and exciting feeling about their future. Take advantage of this. Give each new client a referral letter that offers a cash reward for sending and referring any new clients that your agency signs. This is similar to the partnership program, except I don’t believe you have to pay 10%. A simple fixed amount or small percentage of the first contract is good enough.
That SEO isn’t one size fits all and don’t put all of your eggs into the one proverbial Google basket. Google can and will pull the rug out from under you if you try to take shortcuts so, even though customers want quick results, it’s our job to coach them on the long game for lasting success.
Before you go ahead and start chasing links, there’s a lot of up-front work needed on your website to ensure that you’re able to get the best possible results, especially if you want to rank within the local pack listings (see below):
Starting your own business is no joke. There are lots of things that you need to learn about and you need to put lots of time, dedication and hard work into getting it up and running. Perhaps this is the reason why many people prefer to be employees. It is always easier being an employee rather than an employer.
You’ll also need a name that doesn’t stomp on anyone else’s registered trademark, else you’ll likely get into legal trouble. It also helps if the exact match domain name is available. If you get stuck, there are plenty of branding experts who can help you out, although they do tend to be expensive.
The most important lesson I learned having always been the “doer” of all SEO activity, I have learned that I must delegate activity to trusted sources and partners in order to scale my business. Marketer’s Center has been my most trusted partner to date.

Louisa, if you have the resources in house then you should definitely do it in-house. However, most companies do not have the resources which is why they outsource to other companies. It all depends on what you feel comfortable doing. In my experience the best agencies will do better than any in-house entity. Primarily because their main focus is SEO.
Or work on generating some revenue (if you’re pursuing a publishing model), and have an idea of where your leads will come from (again testing this out and seeing if you have enough lead flow from word of mouth or other advertising is important).
Quite a bit can be gleaned by seeing an experienced account manager deal with various aspects including: pushing back the on deadlines, communicating with clients, coordinating with various departments within the agency and meetings.
Can I start an SEO consulting company with no formal training or experience in SEO? I am knowledgeable about article writing, proper title tags, keyword research, and site structure. I may take Market Motive’s SEO Master Certification course.
Please can you elaborate on this point… where do you get that figure from and should I be worried? We moved to Mountain View from the UK recently and already have two kids… admittedly, I’m employed full time, but I have ambitions of replicating what I have in the UK over here in the US… What you’re essentially saying is that if we were to go on and have a 3rd child we’d need 40-50k a year extra?!?!
Maybe if I search for “Why you should not be self employed,” or “The Risks, Debt, Decisions and Distractions of being Self Employed,” perhaps I’d find an article at SEOBook that gave a checklist and explanations of things to do
This is a great post, it gives me something to strive towards. I’m still starting out, I know how to rank websites well with SEO, but up until now I’ve ranked mainly personal websites so I don’t have any testimonials other than my own. Based on what other companies do for SEO, I know what I do is top tier, but it’s difficult to get top tier clients without clients. Any suggestions?
