While your link builders are working on your first client’s sites, you are out learning as much about SEO as your brain can handle.  Read forums, e-books, blogs, books, anything and everything you can get your hands on.  If you take this seriously and are fairly tech-savvy you should be able to get up to speed within 6 months.  Of course you are going to need to start practicing on sites and getting your feet wet.  Take a smaller one-off deal and see what you can do with the knowledge you’ve picked up.  That will build confidence and you can move on to more complex tasks.

Am currently working on setting up my own site and looking at options to partner with an good local /offshore SEO company where i can re-bill the chargers to my customer after being billed myself for the work. Thank you for your post, it made for a very interesting and well worthy read. I am from the UK and going for a second job interview with a local SEO company very soon. One of the tasks in my interview is to present to them how I will drive new business for their company. They currently only work from referrals but want to rapidly expand their client base. I have been studying my socks off learn all I can about SEO and how to drive business. The main way, I can think of personally, would be to cold call local businesses. Now I understand that if we ‘were that good an SEO company then we shouldn’t have to cold call’, but my argument is that we would just be using any advantage we can in order to develop our business. They already use Twitter and Facebook and go to shows and seminars etc. Do you think cold calling would be a useful way to drive business into an already reasonably well established SEO organisation? If not, do you have any more advice on how I could do this. I am determined to get this job and any constructive advice from anyone would be greatly appreciative…

Great post Neil I am also a young entrepreneur/author/SEO and I am really glad I stumbled across your blog today. Congratulations on all your success so far man!! Look forward to reading your future posts and I’ll see you at the top!

“One of the gentlemen sitting in the room during my speech was a sales rep at Elpac Electronics and he approached me after my speech. He then told me that the company he worked for was looking for a seo. He introduced me to the marketing manager at the company and they hired me as a contractor for $3500 a month.”

Create an online venue where you can promote your products and services, share information on the industry, and establish your authority as an SEO provider. If you don’t have a website yet, we can help you create one that is catchy, navigable, and search engine-friendly. Keep in mind that is easy to rank for a unique brand name. If it’s unique, it tends to be memorable. So my two cents for anyone in a crowded industry is to go for the unique over the generic and descriptive. You can also tack on a byline to the end of your name to remove any uncertainty.

Quite a bit can be gleaned by seeing an experienced account manager deal with various aspects including: pushing back the on deadlines, communicating with clients, coordinating with various departments within the agency and meetings.

Who is involved and what are their skills? Do you plan to hire more staff? At what milestones? What plans do you have for training and retention? You need not solve this problem in house, of course. Your plan could involve using contractors as and when required.

That really depends on the business. If you are charging people a lot of money and not bringing results then you will lose clients. So honestly, you must have a process that works at a competitive price if you really want to make money.

You see, some folks (white hats) want to be successful over the long haul, protect the reputations of their brands and websites, and do the hard work to earn long-term success with legitimate page rankings. The black hat folks want to maliciously exploit weaknesses in the search engine ranking algorithms to fraudulently attain higher page rank than what is otherwise deserved. To be honest, sometimes these efforts do work – for a while. However, once the methods and techniques are discovered by the search engines (and they invest enormous resources to discover and combat this), the sites using black hat techniques can be penalized. Search penalties can range from having their placement in the organic search results artificially lowered far down the list to, in some cases, having the website domain permanently purged from search indexes. Beware of taking advice from the black hats, especially if you want a career as an in-house SEO.

Thank you Neil, this post is full of nuggets! We will take what we are not doing now and change. One question, what’s your advice on signed agreements with Clients? Is 30 day, mth to mth good? On one hand you don’t want to make people feel trapped and on the other you don’t want them to quit on a whim without at least being with you for 6-12mths. Is the industry standard of 1-2yr good enough? What’s a good balance between sustainable revenue for agency, and good commitment & partnership between an agency and a Client?

Thank you, Kifeda! I hope it’s enough as well, but you know, there’s never enough information — I learn more everyday in this business. And that’s one of the things I like best. I look up and see the sky — a near infinite world of knowledge yet to be explored. But let’s try. Thanks for reading!

They don’t get into work and think: “You know what I should do today?? I should go and leave the SEO company working for us a testimonial! I should spend my day trying to find referrals for this SEO company!”

Some people feel frustrated working for someone else and not being the master of your own destiny, especially if the boss is an idiot. I really thank for the whole information which you have shared in this post. 1) Recognize your strengths and build/grow on them. Recognize your weaknesses and either stay away from projects and opportunities involving those, or do something to overcome those weaknesses (e.g., through training), or outsource.

My SEO company landed the business of many of the top real estate firms in Chicago simply by adding our name and link in the bottom of a small real estate agent’s website we were working with. We got this guy to page #1 for “Chicago condos” and of course, all of the big real estate firms wanted to know how we did it and if we could do it for them.

To go from starting a business that isn’t successful, to being a student, and then happening into a $3500/month consultancy gig is truly phenomenal and, unfortunately, too good to be true for most young entrepreneurs. I can’t help but think that an opportunity as rich as this doesn’t just come about on a whim. I’m curious to know if there was any thing that influenced that sales rep to be in attendance that day.

In fact, he said, as I was an SEO blogger for Bing, he suggested I create my own SEO blog site. (That suggestion became The SEO Ace.)

The two brothers, Google and Facebook, are also limiting useful information that SEO’s use to create their strategies (e.g. Keywords: Not Provided or Google Keyword Planner doesn’t show phrase match data anymore, etc).
