I truly belive the assistant should be your first hire. You are the most valuable person in your company and you always will be. Your time is priceless, literally. What you’re going to find out is that 80% of your time is going to be bogged down by B.S. admin work that anyone can do. Following up, contracts, emailing customers, being on the phone and much more that you probably don’t even realize.
Networking in person at business events is one of the most effective ways of finding new clients to purchase your SEO services. The easiest way to get started is by joining your local chamber of commerce. This will introduce you to many local business owners and entrepreneurs like yourself who NEED the service you are offering.
But only you will know when the time is right and I strongly urge you keep your clients business interests top priority throughout the entire SEO campaign. This will certainly keep you in business far longer than trying to manipulate an algorithm which is catching up to these short lived tactics all the time.
This is why you need to gather the initial understanding of how SEO can work effectively into a company’s marketing strategy by working within an industry and among established professionals before taking the plunge and starting your own business.
I’ve also experienced the frustration of self-purchased health insurance. Aside from taxes, it’s my largest expense- and they fight me on everything. It’s a constant battle to get things covered and their argument is always that “I’m not part of a group so exceptions apply”. I’ve seriously considered canceling it and just sticking the money in an account for a sort of self-insurance. Of course, when a few days hospital stay can cost six-figures it’s never that easy.
Transparency is huge when selling any service. People want to see and hear the person they will be working with. On the other hand, if you were selling a product like a printer, nobody would care who you were. But when you sell SEO services your potential clients want to work with people they know, like and have a relationship with. You can start that relationship on your SEO website by being super transparent. This is beyond important, and so many of your competitors won’t do this. Add real-life photos of you (and members of your team) throughout your website, not just your About page. Create videos of you talking. Let potential clients see and hear you, and you will win more business than your competitors. That is a guarantee!
Again, I agree that there are a lot of firms out there who are probably providing less than optimal optimisation for clients’ sites but RankPay (the company I refer to in the tutorial) have a good system in place for people to get a clear indication on pricing and also have a lot of decent testimonials regarding their results. On that basis I think there are definitely worse companies out there that someone new to the industry could outsource their client work to.
Accordingly ensure you’re always delivering value outside of just the number of rankings or which keywords are ranking #1. Help clients improve their conversion rate, create videos, content, paid marketing and/or other areas you’re already competent in.
To go from starting a business that isn’t successful, to being a student, and then happening into a $3500/month consultancy gig is truly phenomenal and, unfortunately, too good to be true for most young entrepreneurs. I can’t help but think that an opportunity as rich as this doesn’t just come about on a whim. I’m curious to know if there was any thing that influenced that sales rep to be in attendance that day.
Go to Meetup.com and search for a list of local events relevant to your industry. Find those that have websites and contact them about sponsorship (most of the time you’ll only need to put on a lunch for them). If they accept, you’ll get a link from their website (local to you) and their Meetup.com page (highly authoritative, local link). Here’s an example.
Those who work the system will *always* be able to find ways around issues (dynamic IP addresses, logging in from larger institutional networks that can’t easily be blocked, etc.) but it is the average person who gets screwed by Google’s draconian monopolistic “customer support is evil” ways. The problem for Google is this: “when innocence itself, is brought to the bar and condemned, especially to die, the subject will exclaim, it is immaterial to me whether I behave well or ill, for virtue itself is no security.” – John Adams
This was a great post, thanks for sharing it. I have been researching a lot lately about SEO regarding education resources and what have you. I understand that it can be as broad or as specific as you would like. I am really trying to develop a plan on what to study and would appreciate your advice. As of now, I am teaching myself by means of free education resources on these topics; SEM, SEO, marketing in general, html coding, and website design. I plan on offering services relative to those topics as a sole freelancer and wasn’t sure if there is anything to delve deeply into that would better my understanding. If you could suggest any other topics you think would be of great help, or any education resources, whether they are free or come at a price, it would be greatly appreciated.
John Wanamaker, a merchant in the was quoted as saying “Half the money I spend on advertising is wasted; the trouble is I don’t know which half!”. I think he would have liked the search marketing business, as it allows you to do three very important things: get inside the mind of the customer, only talk to the people who are interested in what you offer and track what they do next.
