Because of this, you want to survey your clients on a monthly basis. Find out what issues they are having with you, your team, or your company. Let them know that they should be transparent and frank.
You must remember that you will almost never leave a meeting with a business owner getting a straight ‘no’ answer. Even if for some reason they don’t want the service, they will usually just say the old ‘I’ll be in touch soon’ or ‘I need to discuss it with [INSERT RANDOM EMPLOYEE/PARTNER NAME] before we actually move forward with this’.
You can sell some specialized SEO services, such as citation building or reputation management for under $1,000/mo, but the problem is that the sub $1k/mo fee range is where most of the SEO snake oil is sold.
Excellent Post! As a 10-yr SEO and start-up agency entrepreneur, you are hitting many nails squarely on the head. Anyone who is considering starting their own SEO consulting business and eventual agency from a blank canvas, take to heart this article!! One of the Pro’s of SEO is the fluid nature of our industry and survival of the fittest — those who are smart, nimble, hard-working & client-focused can survive & win and it keeps things very fresh & challenging! But that Pro is also a Con. Not only with algorithm shifts and the feeling of holding water in your hands — but also with a watered down marketplace of “SEO experts” who make it more difficult to legitimize our industry. SEO is highly-unique in the business world as most niche industries don’t have such perceived risk to all stakeholders.
Interesting article! Although I know quite a bit about SEO, I don’t think I would ever want to start an SEO company. One reason is that some shady SEO companies are ruining it for everyone by sending out mass spam emails. Check your spam box – probably 50 from people selling male enhancement products and 10 from SEO services claiming to make your traffic skyrocket. These emails leave a bad taste in people’s mouths. Another reason is that Google keeps changing their ranking algo. This will most likely lead to unhappy customers is they get deindexed or slapped in the rankings regardless of whether it is your fault or not.
Make sure to register your company properly with the right organizations, and register your trademarks as well. You will need the company registration to open a merchant account, lease an office, and get license to operate legally in your state. Choose a unique name and register with your local government.
Another great post. I am a customer of your Quick Sprout product which i purchased a while back which i found very usefull in my day to day dealings. One thing i am struggling with at the moment is producing a step by step plan that will allow me to fully analyse a clients website and SEO position top to bottom including their top competitors links etc and then present these findings to them with our quote. It seems i need tons of different products to do this. Do you have any tips on how we can do this without spending so much time and tools to make it happen? I always provide upfront in depth detail about what we do for a clients site but always looking to improve. Thanks in advance. Bill
Do some digging around on SEO forums and find an offshore link builder offering services for bargain rates, but make sure they have successful projects they can show you. Talk to at least 5-10 link builders to find out EXACTLY what they provide, see examples of their work to determine the best fit.
This tactic still may not work for some partners, but it will work for many, and the partnership will then be much more valuable in their eyes than simply “having to give up link juice” without any apparent benefit to them.
“SEO is a cumulative process. If you start now, by the time your competitors catch on they’ll already be months or years behind you. And they’ll have to spend thousands to catch up. On the other hand, if you wait…it could be you playing a desperate game of catch-up” – This statement, for me, sums up why the potential client NEEDS to be buying the SEO services you are offering. It instils the urgency to get moving on it quick, plants the seed of fear about their competitors getting the jump on them and the possibility of it costing them even more money in future to try and get on an even keel with their competitors again.
Last year, increased the width of the main search results area to 600px. In light of this, the generally acceptable length for title tags is approximately 50 to 60 characters, and description tags can be approximately 160 to 200 characters. Take advantage of this space and use it wisely — and make sure you double-check that your titles and descriptions aren’t getting cut off in search results.
