The point I am trying to make is that a lot of people reading this may feel that it’s all too much for them and the fear of failure will prevent them from being able to succeed. I’m here to tell you that no matter who you are, you CAN succeed at running your own successful SEO business; you just need to take everything on board in this guide and actually put it in to practice.
Obviously, it is quite expensive and time consuming to dedicate a monthly campaign to a non-paying client; so I’d like to know exactly what you recommend doing to justify value given to the client? Do you say, ‘I’ll do x for you, in return for allowing me to post your logo on my site as a client?’
Search engine optimization (SEO) is a type of Internet marketing that changes websites so that they rank higher on organic and paid online searches. This dynamic business changes often, and experts must learn new ways of ranking and advertising every year. If you are an SEO expert, then you may consider offering your expertise to other businesses, rather than working for a company. You will need to invest in marketing, education and business organization in order to reap profits from the business. Learn how to start an SEO consulting business.
I know this goes without saying… the best clients you will ever get as an agency is from previous customers, friends, or even family members. When someone refers to you, chances of you closing that deal are really high.
Your website is the hub of your SEO business. In the 10 years I ran my agency, I had at least 15 different sites. Pay attention, because I’m going to save you a lot of time, energy and AB testing by telling you exactly what worked and what didn’t work. To make this easy, just remember two simple words, “clean” and “simple”. Forget everything else, and ignore everything you see in web design today. Most website are terrible, even the ones created by amazing and talented graphic designers. Here’s why. When a customer comes to your website they want to know three things. Who you are, what you’ve done and how to contact you. That’s it. Everything else is bullshit. This isn’t just my opinion. It’s a conclusion based on analytics and years of obsessive studying and experience.
You can even take this a step further than your competition by creating an official letter with your signature, just to make it sound more real and official to your partners. If possible, try to deliver it by hand so you can meet your partners.
The people you meet in this industry are extraordinary. They are very willing, often surprisingly so, to help out their peers and up-and-comers – note how much of their “proprietary” knowledge is shared with one another in the blogs and through social media, all for free! In my experience, when my contract position with Bing Webmaster Center expired, I was unsure if could continue in the field, given my relatively short experience. In that Bing role, I happened to have met Rand Fishkin several times, one of the kindest and friendliest people I know (oh, and coincidently also the CEO and co-founder of the highly respected SEOmoz, and without question, one of the SEO industry’s top thought leaders). He gave me an invaluable piece of advice, which I will share here with you.
Having tools at hand are handy to help you along but experience and making mistakes are all part of the learning process to run your own SEO business. I encourage all SEO’s to have their own learning sites, perhaps run a small businesses on the side to learn the finer mechanics of small business.
My work for STDcheck’s website, started wheen the site’s SEO was in the very beginning stages and, while there were quantifiable results in those early days, I’m still coming up with new strategies two years later.
The easiest and cheapest option is to buy a fully customisable professional theme. Some of the best themes I’ve seen online so far that is perfect for exactly what we need are the Studio Press themes. They look very professional and are fully customisable! Click here to check them out for yourself.
Today, it seems to me, it’s much harder. You really have to earn the rankings by providing true quality to the visitor. So, it seems to me, SEO (if it’s alive at all) is now much more about helping clients build quality sites — quality content, putting the quality content in front of the right audiences and of course having a strategy for profitable keywords, etc….
SEO and ranking in Google is something you will definitely get better at over time. However, if you are going to start a business and handle it for other sites, I would make sure you know what the best working methods are and how to avoid any Google penalties.
What you have to remember is that when you’re reading this, it may seem like there are a lot of steps to complete, but in reality it’s not going to take you that much time to complete them all. There’s absolutely no question that if you follow this free guide and ACTUALLY IMPLEMENT it properly, you too can have your own very successful local SEO business and the ultimate freedom of being your own boss.
Using search, you know where 100% of your budget is going. It won’t be wasted so long as you target correctly. Targeting is what search marketing does so well. If you enjoy figuring out what people want, matching them up with a page that allows them to do that thing, and beat your competition at doing so, then search marketing is a good game to be in. Whether you do that using SEO, PPC, social media, or likely a mix of all three, the demand for qualified visitors will always exist.
Neil, This has motivated me and really need it now. I just had a meeting with a $45 million/yr business and asked them for $100,000 budget. I was able to show them I could get them the same clicks organically that they were paying $10,000/ month for with PPC… and show them my solution was long-term from 3 years of client data in the same industry and locations nearby for the same style keywords. I did not get the deal and it really discouraged me. Was the first time I ever asked for that much money so I could taste it. My biggest clients all fall in the realm of $1500/ month but I cannot build an agency like that for sure. I want the big clients like but am a 1 man shop. You feel maybe I am too small at this point to go for that kind of money? I could have done a better job showing my prospect a path to ROI. I have a new meeting I think for a company that does say $5-7 million per year, is a $100,000 annual budget realistic if I can show them the path to money? I need a wealth mentor. Got to break through this.
The first thing you will need is a website for your new local SEO business. If you don’t already know how to build a website then check out my guide here, which shows you how to build a brand new WordPress website in less than 10 minutes! I recommend using Bluehost to register your domain and host your website (You also get a free domain name when you purchase their hosting).
George! My old friend from my Bing Webmaster Center days! How goes it? I am living IM Ninjas CEO Jim Boykin’s (and Google’s) slogan: “I’m feeling lucky!” It’s so good to hear from you. Thanks for the kind words!
Start social media ranking: Social media websites are helping people leverage in the industry to get a new scope of work. Before you start using these websites, you understand what to do and how to work around these aspects. Social media websites offer great scope to find new work.
Like the idea of outsourcing to scale once you become more established, I’m not sure at the start though. I think if you are to do things properly, you should have an understanding of what is currently working SEO wise, thus helping you to make a good decision on who you outsource to later on down the line.
I love this question. There are ample opportunities to learn about SEO for free because of the preponderance of information available and the willingness of SEOs share their knowledge publicly. I strongly recommend that an SEO newbie read and reread both the Google SEO Starter Guide and the SEOmoz Beginner’s Guide to SEO documents.
Image Name & ALT Tags – If you use images on your website, you should think of good keywords for both the image name and the alt tag. On the first image within the post, we use as the goal is to optimize it for the keywords on-site search optimization. This helps search engines find good images for their image search based on the keywords specified.
Wow, Awesome post! So much stuff here . . . I’m starting a freelance web development business and this will be invaluable information. These are the kinds of SEO questions I wanted to know so I thank you for putting it all together in one place. This is a great guide and I will start to fully look through all of the links and resources you’ve recommended!
Once you have joined these groups and been accepted (some require a moderator to approve you but not all), if you then click on the member list of the group, you will see that there is an option to private message each one of them. It’s not uncommon to find LinkedIn groups in your area with hundreds of business owners in them, the opportunities are endless!
Well, a good place to check out would be the good people over at RankPay. They provide a very easy to use sign up process that provides you with everything you could possibly need, and more, for your prospective client’s websites to prosper in the search engine.
A lot of articles are either overly complex or somehow miss the basics. I always feel like if people have a good foundation to start with, they can add to it later vs. starting out missing the basics and having to make up for it later.
At the end of the night your friend is really happy because he has sold all his paintings and the whole exhibition was a huge success. Your very happy for him, but you end up walking home feeling a little deflated and unhappy. Why can’t you follow in your friends footsteps and leave your job to follow your own passions.
Thanks for the awesome review! I am likely going to re-do some of the green screen videos as I had some lighting issues, but as you said all the content is there. I tried to make it possible for someone who was a compete beginner to go through from start to end and have a pretty solid idea of how to get the business off the ground.
LinkedIn is a great platform to market your SEO services on. The reason it’s so good is that you can connect with the business owners directly without having to go through gatekeepers as you would when cold calling or sending direct mail. Also, by using the method I’m about to explain, you can send as many private messages as you want to people absolutely free!
You can easily run this business from home (or anywhere in the world with an Internet connection). It can be very lucrative. The start-up costs for this business are very low. Normally the service is a long-term arrangement as clients need to maintain their rankings. You can increase your earnings by offering additional related services such as website creation and website design.
The smartest thing to do would be to starting whittling down your household bills now and start slowly building your business. Keep your day job and work at night, you’d be working 15 hour days if you started from scratch anyway so why not do it now but get paid (with benefits) for your time?
If a search engine does not know in what city or district you provide your services, it will not rank your site in top 10 on the local search query, so your potential client will probably not find you.
Got permissions from the customers, you can make some EDMs about the products, and then send to them in a special time. Not only can get the high exposures, but also can get some return customers and traffic.
It’s fine to want to do something and have the drive to do it but if it’s going to potentially create a financial hardship quickly then it is really the wrong decision. There are a few really good options for someone who is on the fence for financial reasons.
Once NAP has been established, search engines will look to local directories to see if they confirm the accuracy of the NAP. If errors are found (e.g. different addresses or names) then the search engines will lose confidence in which information to display to users. A classic example of this would be a business moving locations and leaving up old information about itself across business directories.
Streamline your service into a product and offer that to a specific set of customer types. It will take some trial and error but you will eventually get to the point that you can delegate… which brings us to…
