Keep in mind that is easy to rank for a unique brand name. If it’s unique, it tends to be memorable. So my two cents for anyone in a crowded industry is to go for the unique over the generic and descriptive. You can also tack on a byline to the end of your name to remove any uncertainty.
Thanks for a great post here Kristi – it helped fill in some of the blanks for me. Also worth reminding myself that there’s not much point creating content with blogposts etc and then not bothering to take an extra few minutes to optimise internal links, and promote the content through social media channels at least. I think of SEO as being consistent with a series of small steps, rather than trying to do the ONE big thing!
Hi Rick, Interesting article! I am a college student studying Digital Retailing. I am starting to learn about SEO, Social Media Marketing, and Advertising. What would you recommend that a college student like I do in order to get the hands on-experience needed so I can be successful in these areas, and could eventually get a postion in these fields? Thanks!
I personally set-up about 20 second-tier links that I continuously ping and pass on link juice to my own blogs. That way, I do not have to worry about negative rankings from low quality first tier links.
Today, it seems to me, it’s much harder. You really have to earn the rankings by providing true quality to the visitor. So, it seems to me, SEO (if it’s alive at all) is now much more about helping clients build quality sites — quality content, putting the quality content in front of the right audiences and of course having a strategy for profitable keywords, etc….
As an entrepreneur, you have to get to the point where you simply stop explaining your vision to your family and friends – they’re just not going to get it. We’re wired to seek security and I guess a job provides security in many people’s minds.
While many SEO businesses are doing really well and someone could definitely go in and make a name for themselves by starting the HONEST SEO company, I just don’t think it would be something I’m interested in.
Thanks for the comment! I agree will all of that! I took on plenty of undesirable clients when I started out. You definitely have to hustle in the beginning, but get more selective as you bring on more clients. To be honest, realistic revenue for client SEO is in the six figures per year. That is, if you are doing strong work and have effective lead generation channels.
I believe SEO and web design go hand in hand. In fact SEO should be done before, after and during web design and development. If you don’t offer web design and development services, you could be hurting your SEO results and losing business. When you just offer SEO consulting to a third party web design and development team, and don’t do the actual SEO work, much of what you recommend could get lost in translation. Something won’t get implemented properly and something won’t get done at all. This will hurt results and make you look bad.
The gist of this means that, as an SEO candidate, you won’t likely ever be well-versed in all aspects of the business (especially since it changes and grows so quickly!). A successful career strategy is to become an expert in one thing and conversant in many more. That will help make you more marketable in this career field.
I’m so glad I stumbled upon your site, and blog in particular. You’re so accurate and on the money with all your points, you can’t imagine how much I’ve learned from you! A wonderful source of inspiration and a true teacher, thank you for the lessons! I’m just starting out on my journey and I really appreciate having people like you around.
Help out bloggers – the last method I used to gain customers was to reach out to Technorati 100 companies and offer them free SEO. Most of them didn’t take me up on the offer, but a handful did. From TechCrunch to Gawker Media, I did free SEO for these companies in exchange for a badge on their sites that said “SEO by…” That badge would link back to my site and drive leads. If I got lucky, they would also do a blog post on the results they received from me, which typically led to over $250,000 in new revenue as those blogs had a large following.

If you really want to be safe then feel free to have a solicitor write up a contract for you.
If you can afford it, you should also invest in attending an SEO conference or two. I have found that SEO conferences are a great way to learn tons of new information (it comes fast and furious, akin to drinking from a fire hose!). You’ll also get to see (and if you have the gumption, meet) the experts in this field. And, in addition to that, conferences are great venues for career networking (I can personally attest to that).
Start any negotiation by letting the customer state what they want. then you state what you want. If you both agree, great! Win-win. Chances are, however, you’ll agree on some points, and disagree on others. Fine. Those points you agree on are put off to one side, and you’re focus on trying to find win-win positions on the points you disagree with. Keep going until you find a package that both meets you needs.

Many people think that lack of initial money to start your own business is what is stopping them from leaving their jobs. Yes, it is true that money can limit us, but that is only if you let it! A famous Buddhist entrepreneur once said; “Money only becomes a problem when you treat it as a problem!”
Creating bonds and legal notice are the most important in any business nowadays, but in online business, it’s even more important. It might be tough if you are starting a company with your friends or relatives etc.
