When you begin your business you will have to make a choice whether you are going to target short term black hat SEO tactics or are you going to climb the more difficult, business building model which focuses on white hat strategies?

Speaking of price…You’ll also have a better idea as to how much your work is actually worth (what to charge) once you understand first-hand what it takes to successfully create and implement a strategy.
You may need to learn some web design or programming skills to help you understand and analyze HTML codes for problems. This is not compulsory however, as you can always hire a programmer to handle this aspect for your business.
Why does the industry have such a huge public perception problem? I think the reason so many here hesitate is that there are a lot – a LOT – of bad SEOs out there. The former clients of those who don’t quite know what they’re doing or who are simply unscrupulous then “learn” that SEO is an industry of snake oil, sleight of hand and scam artists and they make sure everyone within earshot knows it. That’s what gets reported in the media. Hell, there was some cop/legal procedural TV show recently that perpetuated the scam artist stereotype when the defendant, an SEO, worried about the jury being prejudiced against him because of his job.
I have been constantly improving that audit throughout the last 4 years of doing full-time SEO consulting. You should find it super helpful and can tweak it however you like. I would charge $500 for a micro audit (8 pages) and $900 for a full audit (15 pages). This is a simple pricing structure and will be affordable for any serious client.
We all know SEO is a competitive industry so geographically target businesses in your local area can be a great place to start. Simply putting your city name in your domain name will also get you some quick wins.
Your opportunity to learn is great from both sides, but in-house opportunities, especially for new hires, are likely to be harder to get, as companies will expect some previous industry experience (that said, transferring to an SEO role from within your existing company might be a great way to start in your career, assuming you’re “lucky” (as defined earlier). It’s often that “right place, right time” thing again. Agencies, on the other hand, can be great places to start and learn about the business from agency veterans.
But I do find it tempting to hang out a shingle or do a small website that does online marketing. I’ve met business people who are incredibly smart that wouldn’t know online marketing if it fell on them. I call it “smart people” disease.
The biggest mistake aspiring SEO company owners make is thinking that the SEO industry is like the web hosting affiliate market. As with any other business, you need to work hard to start an SEO agency from the ground up. Our industry is one that requires you to go out and talk to people, print and hand out business cards, and do a lot of convincing to gather clients. You have to be willing to do that work in order to succeed.
Excellent post. I think that if you work hard on Internet marketing and if you think that you could work on laptop 10-14 hours a day in right direction then you will get some where after few years. Your experience teaches you every thing !
Things to be taken care of with local SEO: The similarity in the contents. This can make the monotony in the mind of the user, and this can lead to the filtering out of the search on Google. There are times when a particular website can have almost content similar to the older ones, and this can lead to Google penalizing the website.
There would be always something more to learn, no matter how much you read, talk, listen and learn about SEO. It’s a fast evolving process, if someone doesn’t keep up with the pace, would surely lag behind.
Speaking of creating social profiles for links, if your goal is to dominate Google, then you should make sure you join Google+. Google’s own social network can help you rank better in search results for people you are connected with. For example, when I’m logged in to Google+ and I search for SEO, I get the following in my top five search results. Personalized search results based on who I am friends with are marked by the little person icon.
What I also learned through this process is that though the majority of our customers were mid-sized businesses, they wanted to see all of the large Fortune 500 companies we worked with even though these customers themselves were nowhere near that size. When we showed our potential clients all of the small and medium businesses we worked with versus only showing them large brands we worked with, our conversion rate of locking them in as a customer decreased by almost half.
P.S. The eHow article was published last summer, but I got a handy pointer to it from someone in my Twitter feed this week. (I can’t remember who shared it, and can’t find it due to Twitter’s cruddy search capabilities.) Whoever it was, thank you for changing my life!
At worst wear trousers, a shirt and a tie. It’s all very well lounging about in your pyjamas at home working but when meeting real, offline world business people; you have to make a bit of effort if you want them to part with their hard earned money.
Partner with the right people whether it’s local or overseas using a website like freelancer.com. You need to build a team so you can either refer your client to them and make a referral commission, or use an affiliate link (eg. if you refer them to Whitespark). This is KEY to building a scalable local SEO business while making extra cash on the side. Cause let’s face it, a 1-person SEO freelancer can’t do it all. Check out my list of WordPress affiliate programs to get some ideas.
Let me help you through some basic and important points, whether you are a part-time worker, or a freelancer, or a business entrepreneur who wants to work full time with your project. Whatever you maybe but this post will help you.
The more creative you can be with the article the better. If you can think out of the box and get your article published even just in your local paper, you can expect a large response from business owners who read the article.
Business skyrocketed with my short, simple, and clear contract. In fact, I had several clients remark on how simple our SEO contract was to understand, and that’s the reason they were working with us.
