Maybe if I search for “Why you should not be self employed,” or “The Risks, Debt, Decisions and Distractions of being Self Employed,” perhaps I’d find an article at SEOBook that gave a checklist and explanations of things to do
Interesting article! Although I know quite a bit about SEO, I don’t think I would ever want to start an SEO company. One reason is that some shady SEO companies are ruining it for everyone by sending out mass spam emails. Check your spam box – probably 50 from people selling male enhancement products and 10 from SEO services claiming to make your traffic skyrocket. These emails leave a bad taste in people’s mouths. Another reason is that Google keeps changing their ranking algo. This will most likely lead to unhappy customers is they get deindexed or slapped in the rankings regardless of whether it is your fault or not.
The point I am trying to make is that a lot of people reading this may feel that it’s all too much for them and the fear of failure will prevent them from being able to succeed. I’m here to tell you that no matter who you are, you CAN succeed at running your own successful SEO business; you just need to take everything on board in this guide and actually put it in to practice.

Search engine optimization (SEO) is a type of Internet marketing that changes websites so that they rank higher on organic and paid online searches. This dynamic business changes often, and experts must learn new ways of ranking and advertising every year. If you are an SEO expert, then you may consider offering your expertise to other businesses, rather than working for a company. You will need to invest in marketing, education and business organization in order to reap profits from the business. Learn how to start an SEO consulting business.
Again, I’m not an attorney, but this is what I did. I waited a few months before creating an LLC for my business. I made a little money first, then incorporated. The reason I did this is because incorporating costs money. In Illinois it’s about $500-$600, plus $250 per year. No need to waste that money if you never get business. I asked my accountant, Gaurang Patel of Southloop CPA in Chicago, IL, about this. Here’s what he said:
Excellent article. You definitely hit it on the head regarding your cheapest clients being the most demanding.Working with clients with large marketing budgets and high value per client is a rather pleasant experience I’ve found in my business. The ones on a shoe string budget are always wanting you to carry their entire business and don’t understand the value of the service.I’ve actually found most these clients don’t pay on time either and often fall off completely.
Create a good piece of content that gains traction in the SEO niche – this can then serve you as a case study to your potential clients to show your skills in generating placements, traffic and engagement.
Be prepared to get slammed and inundated with tools and software in this industry. They are everywhere. Hopefully I can save you some time and energy by listing all the tools I used while running my SEO business.
Enter company address. Make sure the address is the same as on the company’s website and other sites. Google does not trust companies which provide inaccurate or false information. This can affect the site’s ranking.
The above chart shows a breakdown of the weighting of various ranking factors within local SEO campaigns. One of the things to note here is that whilst there are a few slightly different factors compared to the usual SEO campaign (i.e. External Loc. Signals and My Business Signals), links and on-page SEO factors still play a huge part. The only difference is that the type of links you’ll want to focus on will be a lot different.
I got introduced to you and your blog when I read a your blog about lessons learned from SEO Agency. ( http://www.seomoz.org/blog/7-lessons-learned-from-running-a-seo-agency-14225 ) After that I have been reading every blog from you be it on Kissmetrices or QS.
Hi Gotch, this is like a manifesto of my life! So much of what you write resonates with me it’s scary. Of all your points I think the one that is THE most liberating, as a local SEO, is getting rid of clients who are demanding, time wasting, blood sucking leaches. Once I had the first “sacking” under my belt life as an SEO became so much easier.
You should note that it’s never a good idea to pitch your business in QA forums like Quora. Just be helpful. People will see your profile, and hopefully you’ve linked to your company’s website so they can reach out to you for business if needed.
While your link builders are working on your first client’s sites, you are out learning as much about SEO as your brain can handle. Read forums, e-books, blogs, books, anything and everything you can get your hands on. If you take this seriously and are fairly tech-savvy you should be able to get up to speed within 6 months. Of course you are going to need to start practicing on sites and getting your feet wet. Take a smaller one-off deal and see what you can do with the knowledge you’ve picked up. That will build confidence and you can move on to more complex tasks.
I love this because it is so simple. That’s it! These three steps and progress is made. I have been thinking way too long about creating my SEO business. I just need to dive in and get started. I know what I need to do and now I’ll just do it! Thanks!
The number is huge. Now you understood the importance how important it is to be listed in local search for you business. If you are not taking it seriously you are lousing a lot of potential local customers.
