The more creative you can be with the article the better. If you can think out of the box and get your article published even just in your local paper, you can expect a large response from business owners who read the article.
Excellent Post! As a 10-yr SEO and start-up agency entrepreneur, you are hitting many nails squarely on the head. Anyone who is considering starting their own SEO consulting business and eventual agency from a blank canvas, take to heart this article!! One of the Pro’s of SEO is the fluid nature of our industry and survival of the fittest — those who are smart, hard-working & client-focused can survive & win and it keeps things very fresh & challenging! But that Pro is also a Con. Not only with algorithm shifts and the feeling of holding water in your hands — but also with a watered down marketplace of “SEO experts” who make it more difficult to legitimize our industry. SEO is highly-unique in the business world as most niche industries don’t have such perceived risk to all stakeholders.
Hi Neil, again, I have found you and your articles to be very awe-inspiring! Like many others who have contributed to this article (as comments), I too, want to get started in SEO and was wondering how to go about it.
Thanks for the great post! I also read your recent one with the site review sample for your website. Do you have any sample proposals that indicate all of the ideas you talked about? It’s hard for me to visualize this for some reason and I think it would be super helpful. Thanks for your time!
The same goes for internet marketing, or for those people who want to start their own SEO business. This requires many daunting tasks, such as; learning all about the different optimization techniques, finding an initial set of clients to work with, creating your own fully-optimized business site with a good online reputation, etc.
If you’re going to be telling everyone else to get them, shouldn’t you have some yourself? It’s amazing how many SEO companies don’t have Google reviews. People know SEO companies can be sketchy which is exactly why they’re that much more important in this industry. Plus if YOU are doing local SEO, it will obviously help you.
When I first started my agency it was just me and many VAs. I outsourced everything and paid stupid amounts of money for link placement. Some of these vendors scammed me and many of the link placements sucked or got removed.
Whenever possible, show them your expertise by proving you know what you are talking about. If you have testimonials, social following, even your own rankings, those will be a great help when they have to decide.
You can use a tool like Bright Local to check out any existing citations you have and then update them so that they’re all consistent. You can also use the tool to track your competitors’ citations and add your own to the same websites.
Keep in mind that is easy to rank for a unique brand name. If it’s unique, it tends to be memorable. So my two cents for anyone in a crowded industry is to go for the unique over the generic and descriptive. You can also tack on a byline to the end of your name to remove any uncertainty.
I believe SEO and web design go hand in hand. In fact SEO should be done before, after and during web design and development. If you don’t offer web design and development services, you could be hurting your SEO results and losing business. When you just offer SEO consulting to a third party web design and development team, and don’t do the actual SEO work, much of what you recommend could get lost in translation. Something won’t get implemented properly and something won’t get done at all. This will hurt results and make you look bad.
If you’re new to the business, you might think you need a great website to start, not true. While an excellent looking website helps, I’ve seen many SEOs sell their asses off with rough-looking websites or no website at all. So don’t let this be a reason to hold you back from starting initially, it’s just not a core factor to your success.
Also, traffic for SEO keywords for huge cities like “SEO Los Angeles” and “SEO Chicago” is extremely low (despite the very high KD) compared to traffic for things like “best office chair” which has more volume but a lower LTV…
So just try to build a fabulous logo and accurate description where you can naturally attract the attention of your visitors. Research your competitor keywords and description. Then find a perfect description for your site to get more audience to your site.

Before offering anything, understand what you potential clients needs are. Make it a point to learn about his business to make sure that you can offer them help. There is no such thing as “one size fits all”. Making them feel that they are unique and important is what will help you gain their trust.
It is the lack of initial investment that pins down many ambitious entrepreneurs to those boring 9-5 desk jobs! This write-up tries to convince you why starting your own SEO business need no such initial investment and also useful tips and tricks on how to start an SEO business.
At worst wear trousers, a shirt and a tie. It’s all very well lounging about in your pyjamas at home working but when meeting real, offline world business people; you have to make a bit of effort if you want them to part with their hard earned money.
NOTE: When I first started in this business, I had absolutely no experience of face to face selling. However, after landing only my second meeting using the techniques I’ve already explained in the guide so far, I managed to secure my first client in only my second meeting with a business owner… And it was a deal worth £2,000 (~US$3,200) per month!
2. So far my only real working experience is a six months internship at a news website. Do you think I should work at an established digital marketing business for couple of years before venturing on my own or this is not really necessary?
SEO has become awash in “consultants” who want to provide everything from keyword research (which can now be sourced through fiverr ::barf:: to enterprise content marketing and link building) all of which is delivered as complete shit that provides ZERO value and doesn’t move the needle.
The SEO industry, just like every other industry is filled with charlatans / people who don’t know what they are doing; and the truth is that they never last. However, if you are going to build a sustainable business, then you must prove your competence and a good way to do this is to know everything about SEO.
E.g., I remember a project – the client had some money to spend (a government agency) and had some very vague idea. There was no clearly defined scope with clearly set expectations of deliverables. I took it. Man, it backfired. It turned out there were several other people in the picture, “stakeholders” as they would call them in my field, and they all had strong and loud ideas for what they wanted to be done, and there was no consensus. I ended up spending endless time facilitating endless discussions with them of what should be done etc etc etc, all of which after the contract was already in place. The end result: I spent ridiculous amounts of time, nobody was happy, the amount of money was small and totally not worth it, and I was to blame for everything. Man, I learned a lot from that one project.
How search engines operate and the factors that determine ranking are the fundamentals of SEO; quality content and well-built, information-rich websites are the masters level considerations that elevate your tactics.
Regardless, a “local search profile” is simply a searchable listing for your business as indexed within a geographic/local directory or search engine. When I say “indexed” though, I don’t mean as in “waiting for directories to find and list your website” (which directories do not do). Instead, a local search profile is something you generally must create and add to the directory database manually.
Even to this date, I try to respond to every email I get and respond to every comment on this blog. Whatever I can do to help people out, as long as it doesn’t break my bank, I do it. Why?… Because I really care about you, just like people cared to help me out when I was a kid starting my first venture.
“If you were going to sign up today, how many of these targeted keywords would you want us to start optimising the site for?” – This question is good to use towards the end of the meeting once you have answered all the client’s questions and dropped in all the above statements and persuaders during your pitch and presentation.
Professionals go on about SEO, but how can you actually rank higher on a search engine results page? The way everyone makes it sound, it’s easy to see why a beginner would perceive it as a magical concept.
And this explains why the demand for SEO services and experts is on the increase. If you have a good knowledge of SEO, you can make a lot of profit by starting a local SEO, which would cater to the SEO needs of individuals and businesses within your city, state, or country.
