You would think this goes without saying, but you’d be surprised to know how many people want to start a SEO consulting business without knowing SEO that well. It takes a couple of years of working with websites, analyzing web traffic and writing articles in order to become proficient in SEO. There are some basic skills you should already have, such as identifying and analyzing keywords, writing quality content, using Google Analytics or other similar analytic programs, writing meta tags and meta descriptions etc.
I should create a new website and optimize it well (not over-optimize it; just appropriately optimize it for search). This effort could then serve as my professional calling card. In fact, he said, as I was an SEO blogger for Bing, he suggested I create my own SEO blog site. (That suggestion became The SEO Ace.)

Invest in people and processes. If you have the right talent you get a lot done but if you have the right processes in place you can get even more done. Processes help you scale very quickly whilst maintaining the quality of work.
Larger companies will hire one-man bands or small consultancies if they need what you have and what you have is difficult for them to get elsewhere. A lot of search marketing consultants won’t fill this brief, although some are brought in to help train and mentor their internal search teams.
The SEO approach for smaller businesses needs to be about a lot more than just SEO, it needs to be more about SEM – with strong emphasis on the “M” (arketing) in order to avoid the fate outlined in the link above. Google looks deficient if people can’t find the big brand names, but few will notice if a small, generic operator falls out of the index as another relative unknown will take their place.
When you feel that the meeting has come to a conclusion and every possible question the business owner has asked has been answered, it’s time to get down to the nitty gritty and talk money. If the client doesn’t take the lead then a good way to get things started is to say;
It has to be said that advertising on these sites can be hit and miss but if you persevere and can get creative with your ads then there is definitely value in using them. Again, by reading Ca$hvertising you will give yourself a big edge over the competition with your ad copy.

But do remember to write for a human, not just a search engine. Though it’s important to have valuable keywords in your title tag, if it looks odd to a user (e.g., “Boston Cheeseburgers, Best Cheeseburgers, Cheeseburgers”) then you’ll be missing out on a bunch of traffic that thought “Mike’s Grill – Cheeseburgers, Shakes & More” sounded more like a real person.
The blogs were abuzz this week over Google’s “Farmer Update,” which aims to keep content farms out of the SERPs. Thanks for a great post here Kristi – it helped fill in some of the blanks for me. Also worth reminding myself that there’s not much point creating content with blogposts etc and then not bothering to take an extra few minutes to optimise internal links, and promote the content through social media channels at least. I think of SEO as being consistent with a series of small steps, rather than trying to do the ONE big thing!
Here’s a critical piece of advice. Always stay a student of the SEO industry. Read blogs, case studies, and everything the big search engines like Google release. So many people stop studying after a couple years. They think they know it all. Those same people soon go out of business. Here are a few good resources to stay educated.
