Be prepared to get slammed and inundated with tools and software in this industry. They are everywhere. Hopefully I can save you some time and energy by listing all the tools I used while running my SEO business.
Create link worthy content. Infographics are a great example – you create a beautiful image representing important information and allow others to use the infographic on their own website in exchange for linking back to yours as credit.
This software also comes with a built in mailer. This means that once you have scraped thousands of business listings from Google Maps on autopilot, you then these business listings in to the Power Leads Pro X mailer at the click of a button.
This method has the power to bring you in new clients every month without even having to lift a finger to get them. The basic premise of a referral program is that you pay individuals (in this case business owners or employees) a certain commission for referring new clients to you who buy a product or service you provide. This is also known online more commonly as an affiliate program.
If you can afford it, you should also invest in attending an SEO conference or two. I have found that SEO conferences are a great way to learn tons of new information (it comes fast and furious, akin to drinking from a fire hose!). You’ll also get to see (and if you have the gumption, meet) the experts in this field. And, in addition to that, conferences are great venues for career networking (I can personally attest to that).
Gaining an entrepreneur spirit in you will boost your work and your skills more than ever, the Entrepreneurial spirit is nothing but a mindset. It’s an approach to thinking actively and to learn things from your mistakes. It’s also to think what to do in critical situations rather than being sad or doing unwanted and unrelated things.
Recent changes to search engines’ algorithms have made very easy to overdo on-site optimization, but backlinks remain very important for raising a site’s position in the SERPs. And good backlinking is hard. I read an article by Todd McDonald recently that likened it to being beaten up – long, painful and frustrating!
I have three main recommendations. And maybe a warning – like one of those signs you see in horror movies – go back, do not enter, trouble ahead. This is no easy gig so you need to ensure you are up for the task.
The easiest and cheapest option is to buy a fully customisable professional theme. Some of the best themes I’ve seen online so far that is perfect for exactly what we need are the Studio Press themes. They look very professional and are fully customisable! Click here to check them out for yourself.
I think this sums up the entire guide nicely and is a good place to bring it to an end. I know it’s been a long read, over 10,000 words in fact, but I can’t stress enough that literally ANYONE can do this if they are willing to work hard and put their mind to it.
The second business I ever started was an SEO agency. By no means did I see myself creating an agency… I simply stumbled upon it. Before I go into how I built an SEO agency and made millions from it, let me give you a quick background on how I stumbled upon it…
Thank you for your post, it made for a very interesting and well worthy read. I am from the UK and going for a second job interview with a local SEO company very soon. One of the tasks in my interview is to present to them how I will drive new business for their company. They currently only work from referrals but want to rapidly expand their client base. I have been studying my socks off learn all I can about SEO and how to drive business. The main way, I can think of personally, would be to cold call local businesses. Now I understand that if we ‘were that good an SEO company then we shouldn’t have to cold call’, but my argument is that we would just be using any advantage we can in order to develop our business. They already use Twitter and Facebook and go to shows and seminars etc. Do you think cold calling would be a useful way to drive business into an already reasonably well established SEO organisation? If not, do you have any more advice on how I could do this. I am determined to get this job and any constructive advice from anyone would be greatly appreciative…
I benefit roughly $6000-$8000 /a month with an internet task i found on the internet. Those who are prepared to finish easy freelance task for some hrs each day at your home and get solid checks while doing it… Test this invitation http://2.gp/G8zm
1) Recognize your strengths and build/grow on them. Recognize your weaknesses and either stay away from projects and opportunities involving those, or do something to overcome those weaknesses (e.g., through training), or outsource.
The only way you can reach potential clients is to market your services. In my own opinion, the best way to market your local SEO service is to use SEO itself. Getting your website to rank highly for your target keywords; those keywords that clients use to search for businesses like yours is a telling proof that you are skilled enough to help other businesses with their SEO needs, too.
I’ve been involved in digital marketing for over a decade, since 2006. You can also thrive in the face of competition by focusing on a niche. You can combine your passion / hobby with your SEO skill and provide a laser-targeted service for specific people. Example of such niche services are: SEO services for Chiropractic practitioners, SEO services for fashion designers, etc.
You don’t need to be an Olympic swimmer to be an excellent Olympic swim coach, but as a leader, a mentor, it’s going to be hard to have empathy, if you’ve never wrestled with any of the challenges your subordinates are facing. And empathy is damn important.
I think the most important lesson I’ve learned is that you have to have a scalable process in place if you want scalable and predictable results. Such an eye-opening lesson, after learning that from the NYT best selling book, The E-Myth Revisited.

This has been something that’s really worth working on. I have been seen lots about SEO, but never read meanings to them not until now that it comes like a conviction I can add such service to my web as it fits in I guess, perfectly not minding the part of the world I am currently at with her serious challenges and atttitudes to the internet.
I’m same with you when I started my business , I also less than $100 in my bank account, 0 in saving , 0 income , my car was towed because I didn’t have any money pay for the installment, my parents didn’t understand what I was doing that time, deceived by customer T_T……..etc.I’m deeply understanding the bitterness of an entrepreneurs. After few years when you see your business growing up , the public sour things of the past is worth paying ^^
As I spend ever more time in this career field and meet more and more of my peers, industry colleagues, and of course, the noteworthy thought-leaders in this field, I’ve come to realize how many varied paths there are to becoming a working SEO. And let’s be clear: the career of being an SEO is not just one skill set or task. There are many career opportunities in the field of search engine marketing, with SEO being just a subset of that, and then there are many areas of specialization within SEO itself. There are many people who make full careers by specializing in any of the following:
I truly belive the assistant should be your first hire. You are the most valuable person in your company and you always will be. Your time is priceless, literally. What you’re going to find out is that 80% of your time is going to be bogged down by B.S. admin work that anyone can do. Following up, contracts, emailing customers, being on the phone and much more that you probably don’t even realize.
You can use a tool like Bright Local to check out any existing citations you have and then update them so that they’re all consistent. You can also use the tool to track your competitors’ citations and add your own to the same websites.
OMG, I have a website, Elisa! And with your template I can come up with a pricing structure! And as for advertising … wait, this comment is sort of kind of an advertisement, isn’t it? And there’s that kiosk down the street, you know, where people put, like, notices for English lessons with tear-off telephone numbers – I can do that, ’cause actually I have a website AND a telephone!
The most basic thing to do is to make sure that you know all you need before starting up the business. It may seem like an easy thing, but a true expert takes years of practice and reading on this topic. The most important things are: to identify and analyze the relevant keywords, to write qualitative content with the keywords, to use Google Analytics, to write good meta tags and descriptions and many more.
I have been constantly improving that audit throughout the last 4 years of doing full-time SEO consulting. You should find it super helpful and can tweak it however you like. I would charge $500 for a micro audit (8 pages) and $900 for a full audit (15 pages). This is a simple pricing structure and will be affordable for any serious client.
You have to learn to delegate. If you can outsource or white label any of your services, do it. I still struggle with letting go of control over certain aspects of the company but having a partner like Marketer’s Center makes it much easier.
Thank you very much for this article! I have a question. I coded my business’s website (this is the third iteration) and tried to optimize it for search through good content, keywords, titles, etc. I also update content regularly and post on Facebook. We are very successful in our search results. Now, I’d like to open a side business offering SEO to other small businesses. (Not sure of my specialty, though I am a writer and I enjoy finding good stories to tell others about.) My question is this: What do you do if you don’t have access to the code, or if the code is messy? Ideally, it seems that you’d want to start at the ground floor, designing a site that is easily optimized. What do you do when that’s not possible? What do you do for that business?
