Thank you very much for this article! I have a question. I coded my business’s website (this is the third iteration) and tried to optimize it for search through good content, keywords, titles, etc. I also update content regularly and post on Facebook. We are very successful in our search results. Now, I’d like to open a side business offering SEO to other small businesses. (Not sure of my specialty, though I am a writer and I enjoy finding good stories to tell others about.) My question is this: What do you do if you don’t have access to the code, or if the code is messy? Ideally, it seems that you’d want to start at the ground floor, designing a site that is easily optimized. What do you do when that’s not possible? What do you do for that business?
Create a local resource from public data (here’s 30 different data sources) and reach out to local press to get coverage. That’s exactly what Krystian Szastok did and he got some amazing results (you really should read this case study).
Kathy, this is life for an agency SEO. When you can’t physically implement the changes you want to make on a client site, you still have something to offer — your knowledge. Depending on what a client wants or needs, you can create detailed reports on recommended changes the client can give to their webmaster/IT team. If the client site is simply a tragic mess that would be more trouble than its worth to optimize, you can either explain to the client what your service would entail in terms of time, you can pass on the business, or perhaps subcontract out to an expert in web design who can fix the spaghetti code!. Getting cakewalk clients will not be an everyday occurrence, unfortunately. Managing how you accept and decline clients is a big determining factor in how successful you’ll be as an independent SEO. You’re in good company. Welcome to the club!
When I first started my agency it was just me and many VAs. I outsourced everything and paid stupid amounts of money for link placement. Some of these vendors scammed me and many of the link placements sucked or got removed.
There is a huge community of search professionals. They need software tools, data, advice and other services. Obviously, SEOBook follows a hybrid of this model. We provide premium tools, while also engaging in consulting through our community forums. Those who don’t value their time are not a good fit. But those who do value their time can get a lot out of the community in short order, without the noise that dominates so many other forums. The barrier to entry is a feature which guarantees that the members are either a) already successful, or b) deeply understand the value of SEO, which in turn increases the level of discourse.
Here’s the thing, lots of people like Grind say, “Neil is absolutely correct, if you provide value that is greater to the client’s bottom than what you’ve charged them, they will happily keep paying (and recommending)” and I am definitely someone like that. But, I’ve yet to find someone that can produce those results…..
What’s so good about this is that your only real responsibility in this ongoing transaction is answering any questions the client may have from month to month, emailing out the monthly ranking reports (which the SEO reseller company will create for you) and dealing with invoicing and payments every month.

Submit your website to applicable industry directories or, alternatively, buy advertising. For example, anyone in the wedding business could get listings with a link back to their website on The Knot, The Wedding Channel, and other similar sites. Bypass low-quality directories that have nothing to do with your or ones that link to shady websites in the adult, pharmaceutical, or online casino industries.
The most important aspect of your Yellow Pages ad is the copy; get this right and you can make a very healthy ROI but get it wrong and you’ll end up haemorrhaging money on it. One of the best books I’ve read about getting your print advertising spot on is Ca$hvertising.

You’re going to need a page dedicated to the success of your current or past customer successes. This is often the second most visited page on your site, next to the About Us page. If possible, ask your happy clients to whip out their iPhone and shoot a 20 second video about their experience with you. Slap that on your website and watch the leads start rolling in.
CONTENT CREATION – Only create great content that provides real value and is better than what’s currently already out there. Google your competition, see what type of content they have, then create something better and be sure to include stats and visuals when possible.

Discrete content elements – web pages, images, PDFs, videos, social profiles and brand pages, local listings, and off-site (reviews) pages all require on-page optimization. This means knowing the target keyphrase for the content and getting it into the right places – the title, description, copy, etc.
