Reviews not only drive a higher click-through rate to your site, but are listed on search engine page results (serps) and according to an extensive study conducted by Digital Marketing Works, reviews play a critical role in determining inclusion and ranking for Google’s local “carousel results”, that appear at the top of a serp.
I agree with most of what you said here except for the link building aspects. Building links is still the most important aspect to SEO and there is no white hat, black hat or organic. It’s all black hat if you’re trying to manipulate the search in any way. I don’t have a problem with it at all – just saying a link is a link.
Whether you have literally only learnt the term SEO for the first time reading this article, you’re a beginner, intermediate or super star SEO practitioner, one sure fire way to get leads and enquiries from business owners actually coming in to YOU is to rank your own SEO website for high value SEO keywords.
At the onset it’s super important to set clear boundaries. What are your agency’s hours of operation? How often are you going to be updating and speaking with the client? How much communication will be over the phone vs email?
When Google acquired BeatThatQuote it was violating their guidelines. I highlighted that & they banned it. Then 14 days later BeatThatQuote began ranking again, without even fixing the overt issues I highlighted. So they give themselves the benefit of the doubt, even when they flagrantly violate their own guidelines.
This is important because it means that every email that goes out will now be spun and unique which means it has much less chance of being marked as spam and therefore much more likely to reach the recipient’s inbox. You can manually spin each email but it’s a lot quicker and easier to use The Best Spinner to spin all your emails and articles.
My main gig was writing, but I have a personal passion for technology and for helping people succeed. SEO fit the bill for me nicely. I realize I was a lucky beneficiary of serendipity by landing a position with Microsoft’s search engine team. It was a “right place, right time” kind of thing. But not completely. If I had not been a successful writer, taken on new work I was not specifically hired to do, and not had the passion and interest to quickly learn about the field, I would not have lasted.
Another great tip that I picked up from Greg Gifford‘s recent talk at BrightonSEO was to create a page on your website that gives instructions to your customers on exactly how they can review your business (i.e. yourwebsite.com/review-us/). You won’t believe how effective this is when it comes to getting in touch with customers, especially the non-technical ones!
An important point to discuss is what you should be charging your clients for SEO. This is a very hard question to answer in black and white as there are many factors to be considered, I will explain this in more detail later on in the guide.
Start looking around to find an accountant who will tell you what your tax liabilities will be as a sole-proprietor or a single-member LLC. If you really want to take a kick to the shins, get a quote for health insurance and see how much it doesn’t cover.
Depending on where you are in the world, the chances are that there is a large online classified site that serves your country. Some examples being Craigslist (US), Gumtree (UK, AU, NZ) and Kijiji (CA). These sites are free to post on and receive a lot of daily traffic.
The above chart shows a breakdown of the weighting of various ranking factors within local SEO campaigns. One of the things to note here is that whilst there are a few slightly different factors compared to the usual SEO campaign (i.e. External Loc. Signals and My Business Signals), links and on-page SEO factors still play a huge part. The only difference is that the type of links you’ll want to focus on will be a lot different.
Starting your own agency takes a lot of grit. If you believe everything you read online you can set yourself up for failure. Setting up your own business isn’t a sprint but a very long marathon. I leaned it doesn’t happen over night but keep setting your goals and moving forward and never compare yourself to others in the industry.
As SEO Consulting service provider your job will be to analyze client’s websites and suggesting them what could be done to get their sites to rank higher in search engines. If you are not an expert in website creation and SEO, there are a number of training courses you can take to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to start this business. You can also hire SEO experts to work for you. However, expertise in basic skills of website development and SEO is highly advisable.
There are really two main types of roles you can play in the SEO world: in-house or agency (including self-employed). There are countless nuances to each opportunity, but from a broad brush perspective, the differences are as follows:
I’m curious if folks would agree that SEO is much harder today. It used to be, I think, that most people didn’t know much about SEO, most websites did none of it and the search engines were less saavy. So…you could do simple things to get ranked higher.
Awesome post! Thanks for sharing your My question is does this still hold water? has the SEO agency or digital marketing agency field gotten too crowded to compete or are there still ample opportunities to carve out a niche and provide good services, SEO or otherwise, to businesses? Thanks again, big fan!
I know people who worked their rear ends off and had their business fail, in addition to people who were lazy and failed. Sometimes it’s timing, sometimes there’s some luck involved (though luck is generally brought about by hard work), and sometimes it’s just a matter of working harder or spending more then your competition.
Great information. When I got started with SEO I don’t think it had a name. I realized that the yellow pages were no longer worth paying for and had to keep my site being seen. Learning the process was just part of keeping my business alive.

If you want to reach success, then you have to have a good strategy. And in order to have a good strategy, you have to know who you are. What do you bring new to the market? Why should people choose you? Without knowing these important elements, you won’t be able to conceive an appropriate and useful marketing strategy that would bring you truly interested users.
Split your goals into short term, medium term and long term. Where do you see yourself in five years time? How about this time next year? In the case of search marketing, who knows if it will be around in five years time, and if so, in what form?
For those guys who have a SEO company or are planning to start a new business in digital marketing, this course is very good, it will tell you in details how to open a company website, optimize it, find new clients, land new clients from a lot of different sources, and in the end, he will also tell on how to organize your business and clientele.
Keep in mind that you can send partners potentials clients as well. That’s a great starting point and an excellent sign of good faith. Sending a new partner a client first is a great way to help get the ball rolling. I did this before I sold my agency and it was fantastic. A few times a month I would get a couple finder’s fee checks for doing practically nothing, except giving out a name and phone number to a current client.
Thanks for the great info Neil! You really put the smaller clients into perspective and I like how you seem to focus on the Pumpkin strategy and building bigger clients. I think that’s one area that I can use a lot of improvement in. Needless to say I’ll be updating my companies strategies and plan of attack based off of some of these recommendations.
The next day, you want to take the plunge and leave your job to find a new career or perhaps start your own business. However, money is scarce and you barely have enough to live on, never mind all the expenses that are needed to start your own business.
My work for STDcheck’s website, started wheen the site’s SEO was in the very beginning stages and, while there were quantifiable results in those early days, I’m still coming up with new strategies two years later.
While this post is not supposed to be a comprehensive guide on how to set up a local SEO service, I hope you have gotten all the basic information you need on how to get started. Consult other online resources for more information on each step involved.
