A friend of mind recently pointed out to me that all the individual health insurance plans do not cover maternity costs. You can get coverage for that under a group policy but unless you have employees you are going to be paying roughly 4x the cost of an individual plan for you and your family.

The #1 lesson that took me years to understand is that client retention is way more important than client acquisition. I used to dedicate so much of my time into deploying all types of marketing efforts to acquire new business, while giving my existing customers less than 20% of my time. Today, I do the exact opposite and give my existing clients over 80% of my time. Not only did this raise client satisfaction and retention, but it increased the amount of incoming leads through referrals and “word of mouth”.

Crafting a business plan also enforces an intellectual rigour that will help test and challenge your ideas. In crafting your business plan, various questions will occur to you. How many clients do you need to get in order to meet your financial goals? How many staff members can you afford based on those goals? If you allocate all your time to existing clients, how will have time to acquire new clients? Do you have a marketing budget to get new clients?

If you have location or sell through the channel, get your locations or agents up on mobile geo-optimized landing pages and put inbound links from all the major social profile pages pointing to their profile page.

Your one year plan might be focused on SEO, but your five year plan might be to provide the very same things SEO provides today – qualified visitor traffic – no matter what form the source of that traffic will take in five years time. The value proposition to the client, will be much the same. So, your five year plan might include learning about general marketing concepts and studying new digital marketing channels as they arise.

The one thing to keep in mind is that my agency actually provided results. From getting companies to rank in the top three results for terms like “credit cards” and “life insurance” to helping boost their sales, we provided a positive return on investment. If you do everything I mentioned above but fail to provide results as an SEO agency, you won’t be in business for long.

The competition in the SEO industry is very stiff and one of the factors responsible for the high competitiveness is the low entry barrier. Anybody can wake up and claim to be an SEO expert, this is why there are a lot of charlatans in the industry.

I had this philosophy from day one because I got burnt by paying other SEO agencies. They took all of my money and didn’t provide much in return. Due to this, I only took on clients for whom I could provide the results… but I never explained that to potential clients in a way that made sense to them.

And for those willing to commit the time, energy and resources into building a profitable SEO company, a time will come when you get swamped with too much work. For these two situations, outsourcing is the perfect solution.

Simply put, a citation is a “mention” of your business name on webpages other than your own, followed by your address, phone number, or both, regardless of whether there is a link to your website or not.

Basically I could work 10 hours a day for the next five years if there was some guaranteed result, but I guess the uncertainty until you hit it big is just something you have to deal with when making money online?

Some brands don’t want every employee to represent their brand in social contexts, some are OK with that. For example, if you work for The Economist, don’t expect to see you name appear on any of your articles. If you work at The New York Times, you may even get your Twitter handle in your byline.
