While your link builders are working on your first client’s sites, you are out learning as much about SEO as your brain can handle. Read forums, e-books, blogs, books, anything and everything you can get your hands on. If you take this seriously and are fairly tech-savvy you should be able to get up to speed within 6 months. Of course you are going to need to start practicing on sites and getting your feet wet. Take a smaller one-off deal and see what you can do with the knowledge you’ve picked up. That will build confidence and you can move on to more complex tasks.
When starting out, the first website you should work on is your own. Ensure it’s rock solid and follows Google’s best practice. It’s best to lead by example and often times it’s the first thing a prospect will ask – “how are you ranking?”
The meta description on pages of your website gives search engines a little more insight into what your page is about. There is still debate about whether meta descriptions can help with keyword rankings. Regardless, you want to write your meta description with a human audience in mind that includes the page’s main keywords, as the meta description does show up in search results.
Creating bonds and legal notice are the most important in any business nowadays, but in online business, it’s even more important. It might be tough if you are starting a company with your friends or relatives etc.
Why does the industry have such a huge public perception problem? I think the reason so many here hesitate is that there are a lot a LOT – of bad SEOs out there. The former clients of those who don’t quite know what they’re doing or who are simply unscrupulous then “learn” that SEO is an industry of snake oil, sleight of hand and scam artists and they make sure everyone within earshot knows it. That’s what gets reported in the media. Hell, there was some cop/legal procedural TV show recently that perpetuated the scam artist stereotype when the defendant, an SEO, worried about the jury being prejudiced against him because of his job.
Thanks. Basically for a while now I have been looking into starting a digital marketing agency and only in the past year or so started studying more seriously from sources such as yourself and Brian. Also, I started studying about sales at the same time. My end goal for this project is to have a strong,self-funded business with offices around Europe, but for the basics I think that I need someone to be my head of sales and another person to be the head of seo or something like that, because I do not have enough experience to do these on my own yet. The couple of questions I wanted to ask you at this point are the following:
When you begin your business you will have to make a choice whether you are going to target short term black hat SEO tactics or are you going to climb the more difficult, business building model which focuses on white hat strategies?
