The first thing you need to know is that there are unlimited freelancers and contractors in the digital marketing industry. You can find local freelancers or remote contractors everywhere. That being said, grow your SEO company by hiring freelancers first. Find a freelancer that you’d like to work with and hire them for your different projects. Pay them only when you get paid. You never want to pay your freelancers before you get paid. Maintaining positive cash flow is very important to keeping your business running. Only hire your freelancer or contractor when you have steady business for them. That could be after a few months or even years. There’s no need or reason to commit a salary to anyone until you are ready, and it’s totally OK if you’re never ready.
The experience you have understanding devs and designers and how they work. The experience you have seeing how the work you do accrues to the all-up goals of the business, so you can shape your work appropriately.
Newspapers are always looking for good, well written content that they can publish. If you can either write, or have a professional write, a solid, easy to understand article about SEO and how it affects businesses, then there is every chance that it could end up published in your local newspaper.
Awesome post! Thanks for sharing your experience. My question is does this still hold water? has the SEO agency or digital marketing agency field gotten too crowded to compete or are there still ample opportunities to carve out a niche and provide good services, SEO or otherwise, to businesses? Thanks again, big fan!
Also, traffic for SEO keywords for huge cities like “SEO Los Angeles” and “SEO Chicago” is extremely low (despite the very high KD) compared to traffic for things like “best office chair” which has more volume but a lower LTV…
Lots of people want freebies, and I’ve been reluctant to give away too much…I will give clients a quick overview of their site/competitive environment as a way of justifying the need to hire an SEO agency; but I find that some have no intention of buying because they see this as a freebie and hope to get more freebies…I’m wondering how much one should ‘open the kimono’ during these early stages, and if one realizes that the company isn’t going to be a client, whether it is worthwhile to say: ‘Look, I’ll make you a deal, we’ll do x for you as a free service in return for allowing us to wear your logo on our site.’?
When you are considering different aspects of SEO remember it’s an integrated framework that uses a high end content strategy to establish your authority; social networks will gain traction for your promotion with smart implementation; and focus on earning those links to build long-term equity with your readers and search engines.
In return, perhaps you’ve had a confused or overwhelmed look on your face, wondering ‘what exactly is local SEO?, ‘how’s it different from your existing SEO efforts?’, and ‘how exactly do you get started?’
There are lots of SEO experts around, and one option, besides working for a company, is to offer consulting services to other businesses too. However, if you choose this path, you will have to invest in education, marketing and business organization if you want to obtain some profit too.
LEARN YOUR TRADE – Learning SEO techniques and tricks is the first and foremost part of starting your own SEO business. Do an extensive research on the topic and take up SEO courses either online or offline.
What you must do first is create a referral programme page on your website. On that page you should include a bit about what the referral programme involves, how it works and how much money the referrers can make for sending you paying clients.
It’s important to note that none of these are spam comments. If you want to leave spam comments (which are very helpful if you’re starting an SEO business! See above) you’ll want to try one of these 10 comment types.
As SEO Consulting service provider your job will be to analyze client’s websites and suggesting them what could be done to get their sites to rank higher in search engines. If you are not an expert in website creation and SEO, there are a number of training courses you can take to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to start this business. You can also hire SEO experts to work for you. However, expertise in basic skills of website development and SEO is highly advisable.
I wrote a long, in-depth article about this already, so I will highlight the points here. Re-signing an SEO client is about 10 times cheaper than finding a new one, so I would really focus on this. There are five easy steps to re-signing an SEO client:
Since your core task as an SEO company is to increase your clients’ organic traffic, which in turn will increase their conversion / revenue; then it is necessary you know some of the basics terms and how they work. Examples of such terms include:
BingBing Maps & LocalChannel: LocalGoogleGoogle: Google My BusinessGoogle: Maps & LocalLocal Search ColumnSEO – Search Engine OptimizationSEO: LocalSEO: Structured Data & Schema.orgSEO: Titles & Descriptions
A man can learn a lot from books, videos or articles, but if you really want to understand SEO, I would suggest to start your own projects. The best way learn something is to learn it from your own experience and from your own mistakes.

Even when you are “the boss” working for yourself if you have any level of success you will soon be “the boss” with employees of your own. And many successful businesses don’t have 1 boss, but rather hundreds or thousands of them – their customers.
I am pretty sure that if the person has the skills to optimize any website – he is also able to create his website and give the folks the prices for what he’s doing 🙂 I think You should focus on how to learn SEO. Thanks 🙂
I got rid of all the fluff and removed 80% of the BS clauses random lawyers had added throughout the years. I got the SEO contract down to five simple pages. I re-wrote areas of the SEO contract over and over until each area was super short, simple and clearly communicated everything we need to communicate.
You might think a business plan is tedious and not worth the effort. However, it can save you a lot of time, effort and money if it shows you that your business won’t fly. It’s great to model a business on paper before you sink real money into it as there is no risk at this point, yet it will be clear from the business plan if the business has a chance of making money and growing. If the numbers don’t add up on the plan, they won’t do so in real life, either.
I am very sure you must have heard of search engine optimization. If you are having a business and have a website then many SEO guys must have proposed you with an offer that they will rank your website at so and so position on Google. And that they will bring a lot of quality traffic to your website and make your business hot marketplace. Well SEO is an art how you optimize your website for search engine so that they will crawl the content and display your web address whenever users are searching in your niche.
I started doing SEO consulting without any knowledge of SEO and learned as I went along, getting clients through Craigslist. I ran into many challenges and totally sucked at first, but the more experience I got the better I got. The better I got, the more I was willing to give higher proposals and meet with bigger businesses. Now clients pay as much as $10k+ per month for SEO services.
Mostly business plans may help you in getting investments for your projects or SEO business if required. As you may know, everyone may not have a potential to keep investment, some may run to banks and ask for loans, and some may run for investors. So it’s good to have business plans for primary requisites.
After improving the content, you can start getting links to them. It’ll be much easier to get links to it, as soon as the content can prove that it’s the best resource on the web about the topic/information it’s providing.
Front cover: On the front cover I place their company logo at the top of the page, taking up roughly the first third of the page. Underneath that I have the text in bold saying ‘[INSERT BUSINESS NAME] SEO Report’. Then at the bottom of the page my company name.
Regardless, a “local search profile” is simply a searchable listing for your business as indexed within a geographic/local directory or search engine. When I say “indexed” though, I don’t mean as in “waiting for directories to find and list your website” (which directories do not do). Instead, a local search profile is something you generally must create and add to the directory database manually.
Transparency is huge when selling any service. People want to see and hear the person they will be working with. On the other hand, if you were selling a product like a printer, nobody would care who you were. But when you sell SEO services your potential clients want to work with people they know, like and have a relationship with. You can start that relationship on your SEO website by being super transparent. This is beyond important, and so many of your competitors won’t do this. Add real-life photos of you (and members of your team) throughout your website, not just your About page. Create videos of you talking. Let potential clients see and hear you, and you will win more business than your competitors. That is a guarantee!
Although I think the title is a bit misleading, should be more like “How I Built a 7 Figure SEO Agency and What Any Business Owner Can Learn From It.” These same lessons apply to consultants, lawyers, realtors, you name it.
Overall, this is a very good post that brings up a lot of good points, but if anybody is serious about starting an SEO/SEM company… it’s all about strong sales and reliable cashflow, and don’t let anybody tell you otherwise.
