“SEO has the highest long term ROI of any form of marketing.” – This is something I say which some people may not agree with but here’s why I think it’s true; When SEO is done properly and ethically, and you achieve top ranking results across targeted keywords with good search volume, these rankings then have the potential to stay there (without any additional optimisation required) potentially for YEARS to come. I don’t know of any other form of marketing that can keep on returning that sort of value consistently, day after day, years after you have stopped paying for it. This again is a good thing to follow up with after you make this statement to the client as every business owner will be delighted with the prospect of still receiving traffic/leads/clients long after they have paid for the SEO services.
Overall, this is a very good post that brings up a of good points, but if anybody is serious about starting an SEO/SEM company… it’s all about strong sales and reliable cashflow, and don’t let anybody tell you otherwise.
Essentially, the more popular you are on Google+, the more likely you are to influence personalized search results with those who are following you. Hence, take advantage of this social network to its fullest extent to reap the benefits.
It’s important to note that none of these are spam comments. If you want to leave spam comments (which are very helpful if you’re starting an SEO business! See above) you’ll want to try one of these 10 comment types.
This helps demonstrate your expert knowledge of a particular subject, and with the pubs distribution and syndication channels helps gets you (and your business) exposure and promotion at scale. And the only cost is your time.
You need to also develop a system that would help you check and correct errors that can hurt SEO ranking for your clients’ websites. Some of the errors that can negatively affect SEO rankings are broken links, wrong file names, complicated URL and poor grammar.
Maybe you know someone in the SEO or PPC industry that might be willing to have you work with them for awhile or perhaps you aren’t ready to fully go at it on your own just yet. Most employers realize that the best employees sometimes are the more motivated and ambitious ones and with that comes the risk that those employees will look to move up and on at some point.
With affiliate programs once the visitor hits your site you make money right away. With a SEO agency once the prospective visitor hits your site you still have to sell them and then do the actual work.
I am curious about what you think is a more viable way of making money, doing SEO for local clients aka having an agency or making money with authority sites promoting affiliate programs (like Amazon or hosting etc).
If you’re an ad agency with an 8 or 9-figure spend or a household brand-name then you have no worries about falling on the wrong side of the “quality score”. In fact, I wouldn’t doubt that “quality score” is all but completely disabled on larger accounts.
Perhaps the most obvious search marketing model is that of the consultant whereby you help other businesses with their search marketing efforts. Think about the demand for external consultants and where that demand may come from.
As you are done with learning SEO, now it’s time for the site. This is the crucial step in setting up an SEO business, as everyone will first have a look at your website, there is no way that clients will come to you directly and give the projects to you.
Google My Business (GMB) is considered a directory, but it’s a biggie, so it deserves its own section. It’s very important for local businesses to claim their Google My Business (and Bing Places for Business) page. It’s free and can get you incredible exposure if you’re optimized enough to show up in Google’s local three-pack:
Adding a link to your site in the footer of your client’s sites use to be great for SEO purposes, but not anymore. Today it’s great for getting new business. Add a clause in the contract that lets you put a link to your SEO company’s website in the footer of the page. When you get your client on page #1, potential clients can easily find your link and hire you to do the same for them.
Search engine optimization is a continuously growing and evolving industry, and the demand for SEO providers only increases with time. In today’s blog, I want to talk to everyone out there that’s just starting out in the industry. I will dispel some of the most common misconceptions about SEO, and tell you what you need to do to get started.
The fact is that its impossible to guarantee a move up the Google rankings except by the documented ways that you would expect – get more incoming links etc. There are no ‘secret tricks’, so essentially SEO is based on hoodwinking old company bosses who have no idea how the internet works.
This is more of an open question to everyone – does anyone know of a more up-to-date version of the Jim Boykin table Neil linked to in the 2nd paragraph beneath “Be Results Driven” for click rate for top 10 search results? I’d love to use this strategy but I imagine these figures are much different nowadays.
I am always trying to give information out, even though I often feel that I’m working for free (my FD certainly thinks so!) as it just builds your reputation as the go to expert when people have a problem that they cannot solve.
Thanks. Basically for a while now I have been looking into starting a digital marketing agency and only in the past year or so started studying more seriously from sources such as yourself and Brian. Also, I started studying about sales at the same time. My end goal for this project is to have a strong,self-funded business with offices around Europe, but for the basics I think that I need someone to be my head of sales and another person to be the head of seo or something like that, because I do not have enough experience to do these on my own yet. The couple of questions I wanted to ask you at this point are the following:
Make it super easy to contact you. One thing we noticed at my agency was that the more contact forms we had, the more submissions we would get. So we added a contact form on almost every page and our conversions went way up. We also made sure our contact forms were only 4-5 to fields at most. Statistically, that gave us the most conversions. Here’s a blueprint of the perfect contact form that will get the most conversions.
Following all of the things described above guarantees that your web resource will be ready to get into Google’s local search pages. However, these actions do not necessarily mean that you will get to the top of Google search or a pin on a map widget. Therefore, if you are serious about conquering the first positions, you definitely should not stop there. Continue to develop your web resource. Improve the content of old landing pages and create the more relevant content on your site. Keep track of your competitors’ achievements and make the same, but much better ones.
But I do find it tempting to hang out a shingle or do a small website that does online marketing. I’ve met business people who are incredibly smart that wouldn’t know online marketing if it fell on them. I call it “smart people” disease.
Create a good piece of content that gains traction in the SEO niche – this can then serve you as a case study to your potential clients to show your skills in generating placements, traffic and engagement.
In terms of revenue potential, most SEO engagements start at $1,000/mo and typically much higher. Josh Steimle wrote a great post on how to plan and budget for SEO on Forbes. Most small businesses pay between $1,000/mo and $5,000/mo. Larger small business may pay $5,000/mo to $10.000/mo and much high depending on many factors such as the level of competition and geographic scope.
Google Analytics & Google (PPC) Pay-Per-Click Online Advertising, Facebook Ads(These tools are commonly used by many businesses and are very easy to use. Google Analytics allows you to track your website traffic and its various sources, Google Adwords allows you to find out exactly what keywords your target audience is searching for, Google Adwords + Facebook Ads allow you to create target ads on their respective platforms)
What I’m about to show you, is something I never had. A step by step, ultimate guide on how to start a SEO business. I had to learn everything through trial and error, which took an incredible amount of time and energy. I wish someone had posted a detailed guide that would have saved me the time and money I spent learning the business side of SEO. That being said, I’m going to tell you everything I learned starting a successful SEO business and going from making a few hundred dollars a month to making over $120,000 per month. Eventually, my SEO company was so successful a huge agency in Chicago acquired it, which is how and why I founded MySiteAuditor. But that’s another story.
What’s even more impressive is that you can save the data to a file with the phone numbers highlighted as links. You then simply setup Skype so that phone numbers become clickable links which then means you just take the file and one by one click each number to phone the business. This will save you masses of time in the long run which you would’ve wasted dialling out the numbers manually.
Sometimes, I see some SEO firms marketing their business using only paid advert methods such as Google Adwords. I would never hire such professionals because their mode of advertising only shows their incompetence. If they were really experts in SEO, they would have used SEO to market their services; not paid ads! Even if you will adopt other online marketing strategies, you must give a good account of yourself by working on your website’s rankings first.
Once we learned this, we started to work with as many large brands as possible, even if the large brand wasn’t willing to spend money on us… Heck, we were even willing to lose money or do the work for free.
Many people think that lack of initial money to start your own business is what is stopping them from leaving their jobs. Yes, it is true that money can limit us, but that is only if you let it! A famous Buddhist entrepreneur once said; “Money only becomes a problem when you treat it as a problem!”
The above image shows how KISSmetrics’ own title tag and meta description shows up in Google search results. You can see that the keywords searched by a user (in this case, the keyword was KISSmetrics) are bolded by Google in both the title tag and the meta description. This is why you have to use your business or brand name and keywords in both the title and meta description – it helps your search results stand out to the searcher when they are searching those terms.
Nice…I do see so much opportunity for people to become specialist in specific areas….since each year there are so many new aspects of what Internet Marketing as a whole is made up of (where are your buyers?…find out where, and be there too…), that there is always new opportunity to become a specialist in one particular field of internet marketing…
