Now that you have a handle on your key concepts and have built a strategic keyword list, you’re ready to create a high-level plan for content creation. I say high-level because this will help inform your website user experience, the type of people you hire, and the kind of narrative, social, video, or other type of digital content you invest in.
If you can afford it, you should also invest in attending an SEO conference or two. I have found that SEO conferences are a great way to learn tons of new information (it comes fast and furious, akin to drinking from a fire hose!). You’ll also get to see (and if you have the gumption, meet) the experts in this field. And, in addition to that, conferences are great venues for career networking (I can personally attest to that).
With new online businesses and e-commerce sites popping up every day, starting an SEO business can be a great way to profit using your expertise in generating organic traffic and maximizing revenue potential.
You get to the exhibition and find loads of stunning paintings hung on the wall attracting lots of attention from other people. You really like friend’s artistic style and one painting in particular has caught your eye. You want to buy it badly, but simply can’t afford it.
SEO is a knowledge-based game and you can’t start a successful business around it if you don’t understand how it works. To succeed as an SEO service provider, you must invest in learning everything you can about SEO; and that definitely takes time / resources. But you will definitely smile to the bank in the long run if you stick to it.
I know people who worked their rear ends off and had their business fail, in addition to people who were lazy and failed. Sometimes it’s timing, sometimes there’s some luck involved (though luck is generally brought about by hard work), and sometimes it’s just a matter of working harder or spending more then your competition.
You will earn a lot of karma points, and you’ll notice that people will start saying great things about you to other businesses or people, which eventually will get you more business. But the key is to not expect anything in return when helping people.
Businesses are finally starting to realize the importance of online reviews from their customers. According to a recent survey, 84 percent of people trust online reviews as much as a personal recommendation, and seven out of 10 customers will leave a review for a business if asked by the business.
When it comes to getting a new client to sign a contract, some people don’t bother but other people insist on it. The way I look at it is that if my client really wants to sign a contract then I am happy to and I always have contracts at the ready for both parties to sign.

The other elephant in the room is stress. The stress of being the breadwinner is stressful enough, but if you have no safety net or if your business is brand new (thus more unstable than 9-5 corporate stuff) as well then it is really stressful. This is something to keep in mind and something you might want to try and emotionally reconcile before you start.
by the way, that is a very indiscreet question and you will probably not want to answer them but I would like to know what is a realistic revenue an SEO company could make with, lets say, three assistents? Any idea if Europe is more difficult than US? Most of the companies are so conservative here and dont understand the value of IM 🙁
Awesome post! Thanks for sharing your experience. My question is does this still hold water? has the SEO agency or digital marketing agency field gotten too crowded to compete or are there still ample opportunities to carve out a niche and provide good services, SEO or otherwise, to businesses? Thanks again, big fan!
Google wants you to use structured data markup because it helps their spiders better determine what your site content is about. Google even offers a Structured Data Testing Tool so you can check to see if your markup is properly implemented.

Your opportunity to learn is great from both sides, but in-house opportunities, especially for new hires, are likely to be harder to get, as companies will expect some previous industry experience (that said, transferring to an SEO role from within your existing company might be a great way to start in your career, assuming you’re “lucky” (as defined earlier). It’s often that “right place, right time” thing again. Agencies, on the other hand, can be great places to start and learn about the business from agency veterans.

One emerging element of technical SEO is the creation of open data sets or APIs. If your business will thrive by getting your inventory or content into as many places as possible, consider creating data feeds or APIs for third-party developers to use.
Search engines are geo-locating results more and more – not just the local results block but the core web results as well. This means you need to make your content as locally relevant as possible and to make it work great on mobile devices (where a ton of local searching is done).
In this business you’ll notice that there are many agencies who specialize in one area of digital marketing. That could be web design, mobile, social media, PPC, online PR, etc. Often times, their clients will ask them about SEO services which they don’t offer. You want to partner with these agencies. Offer them a standard 10% finders fee if they send you any business. In other words, if they send you a client that you sign for $20,000, send them a check within 5 days of signing the new client for $2,000.
