There are two categories to this. The first being the category that takes in the name, address and contact number option. In this category, there need not be any changes because variation at this level can create disturbances that can be sometimes misread by Google. Google continues to perpetuate a world where they encourage the exact type of behavior they are trying (supposedly) to stop. Why is there so much spamming, deceptive advertising, affiliate desperation and gray/black hat SEO? Simply because they have ceased to foster any sort of fair or open environment where legitimate businesses can compete- so people get desperate. It’s harder than ever to get your business seen in Google- even if you’re willing to pay for it.

I think there is plenty to takeaway here: speaking both as a professional SEO and as a nonfiction writer. But I also feel there is a unique and direct message to plenty of potential entrepreneurs reading this. I really feel that there is a clear point in your narrative that really stands out – one that I am going to call your “one-in-a-million” moment. I’m referring, of course, to this:

Start any negotiation by letting the customer state what they want. then you state what you want. If you both agree, great! Win-win. Chances are, however, you’ll agree on some points, and disagree on others. Fine. Those points you agree on are put off to one side, and you’re focus on trying to find win-win positions on the points you disagree with. Keep going until you find a package that both meets you needs.

At that point you should be able to confidently take on clients and provide some sort of marketing value.  Is this the best way to go about starting a consulting company?  No.  Are you going to make a ton of mistakes?  Yes.  Will the company become successful?  It depends on your desire to succeed, your ability to perform for clients, your ability to market your services to other clients, your ability to run a business and stay organized.

Ok, now you’ve got everything prepared and ready, it’s time for the actual meeting. Whatever you do, DON’T BE LATE! If anything, turn up 5 minutes early and just sit in the waiting area collecting your thoughts and running over in your head what you’re going to say in the meeting.

While by no means an exhaustive list, I think if SEO newbies can master these three areas, they will be well on their way to success in search engine optimization and many other disciplines in the digital marketing industry.

Some people loathe the idea of a boss and that’s fine. Even good people have bad days so it’s not always going to be peaches and cream but if you are in a spot where there is mutual respect and fairness then I’d say hang on to it until you can financially manage to go out on your own.

One trick I tried many years ago was that I created 3 landing pages for 4 local businesses and routed all queries from this landing page to them directly. Once I had sent enough inquiries (tracking script), I actually approached them and showed them the proof = “x” people searching for you, “y” people coming to my landing page = “z” people actually contacting you, now tell me, where should we sit down to talk??

Because of this, you want to survey your clients on a monthly basis. Find out what issues they are having with you, your team, or your company. Let them know that they should be transparent and frank.

Think about areas that are a pain for you in your current search marketing work. These areas are likely a pain for other people, too. If you can make these pain points easier, then that is worth money. The search community tends to be generous about getting the word out when truly useful tools and services spring up. The hard part is when more service providers enter a niche it becomes harder to maintain a sustained advantage in your feature set. As that happens, you need to focus on points of differentiation in your marketing strategy.

As mentioned above, Bing also has a comparable page for local businesses called Bing Places for Business. The process is very similar to GMB, and you should definitely have your business present on Bing’s local directory, too.
