Great post Kristi! I have recently started in SEO and this article has really given me a clearer perspective regarding the basics. Many articles I’ve read have a tendency to talk around the topic. Your clarity on the matter is highly appreciated.
What other forms of advertising/marketing do they currently use?: This question is a good one for a few reasons. Firstly because it gives you an idea of the sort of money the business owner is already spending on advertising. Secondly, once the business owner has revealed what advertising they currently pay for, you can ask them if they are happy with the response they are getting from that advertising. In most cases you will find that the answer to that question is that they simply don’t know. This is where you can explain how they can track exactly how many more targeted visitors they will get to their website through your SEO efforts.
In today’s landscape, more than 125 million US consumers walk around with smartphones, representing 54% of mobile subscribers. Here’s a high-level breakdown of how they use their smartphones to access local information:
Excellent Post! As a 10-yr SEO and start-up agency entrepreneur, you are hitting many nails squarely on the head. Anyone who is considering starting their own SEO consulting business and eventual agency from a blank canvas, take to heart this article!! One of the Pro’s of SEO is the fluid nature of our industry and survival of the fittest — those who are smart, nimble, hard-working & client-focused can survive & win and it keeps things very fresh & challenging! But that Pro is also a Con. Not only with algorithm shifts and the feeling of holding water in your hands — but also with a watered down marketplace of “SEO experts” who make it more difficult to legitimize our industry. SEO is highly-unique in the business world as most niche industries don’t have such perceived risk to all stakeholders.
Some brands don’t want every employee to represent their brand in social contexts, some are OK with that. For example, if you work for The Economist, don’t expect to see you name appear on any of your articles. If you work at The New York Times, you may even get your Twitter handle in your byline.
Google Analytics – Use Google Analytics to learn more about the visitors to your website. In particular, monitor your organic search traffic sources to see what keywords people are using to find your website in search results. By setting up goals, you can see which keywords lead to visits where visitors do what you want them to do on your website such as sign up for a mailing list or purchase a product. This will help you learn what keywords you should be targeting with your SEO campaign.
Define the market you’re targeting. How big is it? What are the growth prospects? What is the market potential? How does your business fit into this market? What are your sales goals? What is your unique selling proposition?

In the short run, you will lose money on business development. In the long run, however, you’ll be able to make it up. The quickest way for you to increase your revenue is to become the outsourced arm of bigger agencies.
You can find a bunch of technical issues with your site, but if the company is removing the content completely, not selling that product in the future or moving into something new, fixing those old technical issues could be a waste of time and resources.
This is more of an open question to everyone – does anyone know of a more up-to-date version of the Jim Boykin table Neil linked to in the 2nd paragraph beneath “Be Results Driven” for click rate for top 10 search results? I’d love to use this strategy but I imagine these figures are much different nowadays.
Stop looking for loopholes and strategies to beat the Google. The algorithm changes too quickly to capitalize on loopholes. You’re much better off creating good long-term value for your clients. Play for the long term by providing value and focusing on user experience above all else.

My advice for you, if you really want to do SEO, is to specialize in a particular service or industry. Get really good at link building or E-Commerce SEO…or specialize in travel or real estate SEO… something very specific that you can master. Once you build connections in a particular niche (writers, site owners, bloggers, directories, etc. etc.) the results will be much easier to attain and duplicate. Then you build a name for yourself in that niche and you can easily sell potential clients and get tons of referrals from existing ones.
