I am curious about what you think is a more viable way of making money, doing SEO for local clients aka having an agency or making money with authority sites promoting affiliate programs (like Amazon or hosting etc).
As you are done with learning SEO, now it’s time for the site. This is the crucial step in setting up an SEO business, as everyone will first have a look at your website, there is no way that clients will come to you directly and give the projects to you.
Creating bonds and legal notice are the most important in any business nowadays, but in online business, it’s even more important. It might be tough if you are starting a company with your friends or relatives etc.
Positive reviews work in favour of local sites, when it comes to their ranking. However, try to avoid a too rapid reviews overflow since Google might find this suspicious. Also, it is important that reviews come from the accounts that are active.
Another great post. I am a customer of your Quick Sprout product which i purchased a while back which i found very usefull in my day to day dealings. One thing i am struggling with at the moment is producing a step by step plan that will allow me to fully analyse a clients website SEO position top to bottom including their top competitors links etc and then present these findings to them with our quote. It seems i need tons of different products to do this. Do you have any tips on how we can do this without spending so much time and tools to make it happen? I always provide upfront in depth detail about what we do for a clients site but always looking to improve. Thanks in advance. Bill
Starting an SEO agency from scratch is probably the most difficult. The startup costs are pretty low, because all you really need is a website and a way to fulfill services. Setting up is easy, but getting clients is tough. Trying to get organic visibility for SEO services will be tough because you will be competing with SEO agencies that have been doing it for years. These agencies will have a track record, organic rankings and testimonials.
Businesses are finally starting to realize the importance of online reviews from their customers. According to a recent survey, 84 percent of people trust online reviews as much as a personal recommendation, and seven out of 10 customers will leave a review for a business if asked by the business.
The other good aspect of this is that you will have the upper hand as being in the newspaper portrayed as the local SEO expert will instil trust in these business owners and make it easier for you to convert them to paying clients.
You might think self-employment is all about working less, spending more time with your family, going to the beach while everyone else is in a cubicle, and all that jazz. While it certainly can be at some point, it is not how you will start out 99% of the time.
It is simply a numbers game, if you are using the correct script and dialling enough numbers per day, there’s absolutely no doubt you will be able to set appointments. The main reason people lose faith in cold calling is because they give up too early, you have to be ready to dig in for the long haul with cold calling, if you do, it can reward you handsomely!
The biggest mistake aspiring SEO company owners make is thinking that the SEO industry is like the web hosting affiliate market. As with any other business, you need to work hard to start an SEO agency from the ground up. Our industry is one that requires you to go out and talk to people, print and hand out business cards, and do a lot of convincing to gather clients. You have to be willing to do that work in order to succeed.
Consultants in SEO and marketing in general have seen a huge uptick in job openings in the past few years. An October study by CNNMoney and PayScale.com place marketing consultants, which include SEO specialists, as the second-best positions in the U.S. based on pay and industry growth. According to the survey, they comprise more than 282,000 jobs with a 41.2 percent growth rate over the past 10 years.
It’s also best if you can educate yourself ahead of time using the resources Neil mentioned above (SEW & SEOBook). Plus check out some tools like SEOMoz and Hubspot. The more knowledge you have about the search engine landscape, the better equipped you will be to find a good company to work with.
You’ve probably been asked “how do you go about SEO?” I start by telling clients I follow Google’s local search ranking factors to make sure their core SEO elements are in place (people love that). You can break this down into Google My Business, citations, reviews, and geo-targeted landing pages (on-page SEO). Then I ask them a couple questions about whether they need help in these areas. I’d say 80% of people end up working with me when I use this sales approach.
Also make sure you niche down as much as possible, as this is where you are going to find opportunity and be able to potentially establish your site as an authority and trusted resource for information.
The other elephant in the room is stress. The stress of being the breadwinner is stressful enough, but if you have no safety net or if your business is brand new (thus more unstable than 9-5 corporate stuff) as well then it is really stressful. This is something to keep in mind and something you might want to try and emotionally reconcile before you start.
Recent changes to search engines’ algorithms have made very easy to overdo on-site optimization, but backlinks remain very important for raising a site’s position in the SERPs. And good backlinking is hard. I read an article by Todd McDonald recently that likened it to being beaten up – long, painful and frustrating!
All you have to do is type in the URL of the business’s website in to the software and hit go. The software then compiles a professional, custom SEO report for that site. You then simply take the report, add a quick introduction at the beginning, include the keywords and search volume they are missing out on and a call to action at the end to get them to contact you, voila!
While some of you may be thinking this goes against everything that an SEO business stands for, it would be a mistake to overlook the old fashioned Yellow Pages book for promotion. There are still a lot of people who use the Yellow Pages to find businesses and services that haven’t yet started using the web for this instead.
You should start receiving emails and calls within a couple of days from the owners/managers of the businesses you have emailed wanting to speak to you and get more info about your programme. What you should do now is take it to the next level. Take the harvested details from Power Leads Pro X and one by one, using Skype, click on the phone number of each of business that hasn’t got back to you and phone them.
With this kind of investment and ongoing costs, seeking an SEO business for sale and going that route starts to make a lot of sense as an option. When you buy an established SEO business, at least there is a local track record and (presumably) some existing SEO equity in the business. In a franchise relationship, you are buying into the strength and recognition of the existing franchise brand – and with Internet marketing franchises, there aren’t any with strong brand recognition. And if you’re not buying into a brand, then what are you paying for?
I wrote a long, in-depth article about this already, so I will highlight the points here. Re-signing an SEO client is about 10 times cheaper than finding a new one, so I would really focus on this. There are five easy steps to re-signing an SEO client:
Scott, I think that price range is realistic. You really have to show them the value proposition you are offering them. Back it up with case studies and your past work. Shoot me an email so we can discuss some options. firstname.lastname@example.org
Aside your computer and reliable internet connection, you will need special software packages to make your job faster and organized. The software packages you will acquire will serve for various tasks such as keyword research, SEO analysis, link profiling, link building, article spinning, etc.
Think about it. The longer the contract the longer the decision process. Why make things complicated for your clients? Why make them think harder about whether or not they want to work with you. Again, I’m not an attorney, but shorter, simpler, and clearer contracts close way more deals.
Since users and search engines will be reading the pages on your site, it’s important to naturally use the keywords you’d like to rank for. After all, how else will anyone know what services and products your business offers? The two main areas in which to include your desired keywords are the title tag and body copy.
A common new years resolution is “quit the rat race and be your own boss”. In this article we’ll take a look at what is involved in starting up your own search marketing business, the opportunities you could grab, and the pitfalls you should avoid.
Make sure you don’t negotiate on your prices because I bet other SEO agencies won’t go into this much depth to lock in a potential client. Yes, you may be more expensive, but at least the company will know what they getting with you versus what they will get with competing SEO agencies.
Additionally, many social media platforms, like Hootsuite and Tiny Torch, allow you to monitor and get alerts any time your brand is mentioned. Whenever a review is left about your business, positive or negative, be sure to respond to it. That shows other people reading the reviews that you, the business owner, care what your customers think.
When you first meet with a business owner face to face, the first thing you want to do is ask them some important questions. Here are a few of the more important ones I ask, along with the reasons why and how the answers can help steer your meeting to a successful conclusion:
Starting an SEO consulting business is a very creative business whereby you can earn unlimited income while helping business owners and individuals attract more visitors to their websites. The service you provide will consist of analyzing client’s websites and letting your clients know what could be done to get their sites to rank higher.
In addition, another key component which you’ve also heard many times before is the importance of having a mobile-optimized site. What’s the point of increasing your rankings in local search results when your website isn’t accessible on-the-go, when users and potential customers actually need to access information. In fact, 73% of mobile search triggers additional action and conversion like:

In today’s blog, I want to talk to everyone out there that’s just starting out in the industry. I will dispel some of the most common misconceptions about SEO, and tell you what you need to do to get started.
