I highly recommend 6-month+ contracts that yield you recurring revenue — this gives predictability and consistent cash flow you can manage.

Great information. I especially like the fact that you broke down the difference between in house SEO vs SEO firm. Many times people think that an outside agency should know all about their area of expertise. The problem is with such a diversified group of clients, it is hard to know all about an area of business. With that said, with any client that you are working with, you should know all about their business and you will be able to serve them just fine.

While your link builders are working on your first client’s sites, you are out learning as much about SEO as your brain can handle.  Read forums, e-books, blogs, books, anything and everything you can get your hands on.  If you take this seriously and are fairly tech-savvy you should be able to get up to speed within 6 months.  Of course you are going to need to start practicing on sites and getting your feet wet.  Take a smaller one-off deal and see what you can do with the knowledge you’ve picked up.  That will build confidence and you can move on to more complex tasks.

Make sure to register your company properly with the right organizations, and register your trademarks as well. You will need the company registration to open a merchant account, lease an office, and get license to operate legally in your state. Choose a unique name and register with your local government.
