Best part to me was defiantly making sure to have more than one revenue stream. Doing so can be challenging to those who are just starting out. That being said, once you understand the 3-7 or so different ways any blogger or SEO company can make income, you’ll be so glad you took the time to implement them from the beginning.
After you took the special course (or not), you should write a business plan. Knowing beforehand what your goals and objectives are will make everything easier. Write your plans on 5 years for management, marketing, finance and staff. Moreover, think about the fact that you could use these plans in order to get a loan or obtain an investment.
Another great tip that I picked up from Greg Gifford‘s recent talk at BrightonSEO was to create a page on your website that gives instructions to your customers on exactly how they can review your business (i.e. yourwebsite.com/review-us/). You won’t believe how effective this is when it comes to getting in touch with customers, especially the non-technical ones!
Some social medias are very popular now, like Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and Google+. Like Facebook, you can build the pages for the company or products, and you can communicate with the potential customers conveniently.
I own a product photography business and i’m getting ready to start a huge content marketing push. I’ve been following your blog for the last 2 years and this article stuck in my head. I’ve noticed that in my keyword research that ‘how to’ photograph it yourself keywords make up a huge portion of the traffic looking for our primary keyword term “product photography”.
Now, this is not to say that you shouldn’t promote / establish yourself online, just saying that even though this is a great long-term objective, it’s a generally poor and unreliable strategy to claim market share when you’re just starting out.
The affiliate positions a site in the top ten results, gathers leads and traffic, and then sells them to someone else. The display advertiser publishes content in order to provide space for advertising, and typically makes money on the click-thrus.
The number of small businesses coming online is increasing rapidly. But unfortunately, most brick and mortar businesses are still offline. This is an avenue for you to make extra cash by convincing them to put their business online and educating them about free traffic / customers.
These are some of the ways you can start earning money from your SEO firm. Before you set your company, you need to be defined by what you want and how you want your company to grow. There are people who started SEO and then slowly developed their firm.
I’ve had a client who took so long to pay me for delivered (in fact, over-delievered) services, his wife had a baby… no, she actually did, and she wasn’t pregnant when I sent the invoice. I learned my lesson the hardway, if you’re reading this – no excuses for falling into the same trap.
Great advice Marvin, especially this part: “Trust me on this. Don’t waste your valuable time on things anyone can do.” Getting stuck on stupid shit like reading emails that don’t matter or focusing on stuff that doesn’t make money is a time kill and a slow death to growth.
Thank you so much Neil for your insight on SEO. I have become a huge fan of your emails and blog post. I always look forward to what you’re going to write about next. You give away many Gold Nuggets Neil about SEO, thank you!.
I agree with you that speaking at conference is effective and I will like to go in that direction. What is you don’t have access to conferences, what do you do? How can you get one going most in a rural area?
One of the most important things I’ve learned from running my own agency is that I don’t have enough time to do everything. It’s important to outsource and to not spread myself too thin. For example, outsource your links! Outsource any web development work you can and focus that time instead into managing clients and sales.
Walmart, KMART, Victoria’s Secret, etc. did not build their empires on dodgy backlinks from link networks, but on the basis of understanding how they were different, gaps in the market, what the customer needs and providing the solutions they need.
If at this point you meet resistance or the client is still uncertain and not sold, it’s time to reiterate some of the statements from above that we’ve already covered in the guide. It’s your job to make the client feel that he NEEDS this SEO service, and need it now!
Start networking on Twitter – build up your relationships and just be active helping the community. Some of the best friends online I made was through helping when someone needed it, people really appreciate it.
