You can start your own SEO company but before that, you need to understand how to be so. To start up an SEO company is a very tough task. If you are defined by the process and if you learn how to make your website work, you can become an entrepreneur.
Another thing to think about if you’re cash rich but time poor, especially with many people leaving the SEO game, is to buy an existing SEO business. You’re buying existing contracts and/or a client list, and you may be able to pick up some skilled employees, too. Buying a business is a topic in itself and outside the scope of this article, however it’s an avenue to think about especially if you are capital rich and time poor. You may be able to manage such a business part time, as you have less pressure to develop new business from scratch and the existing employees can handle the work at the coal face and deal with clients during the day.
It’s worth mentioning that this doesn’t just mean Google reviews. You’ll also want to focus on getting reviews on your Yelp page (they’re used by Apple maps), along with other local directories. Your first priority should be Google reviews though.
There are lots of new SEO companies that come out the gates, do a load of dodgy link building and rank for their head terms (SEO company in Birmingham, etc.) and then think they know all there is to know.
“SEO has the highest long term ROI of any form of marketing.” – This is something I say which some people may not agree with but here’s why I think it’s true; When SEO is done properly and ethically, and you achieve top ranking results across targeted keywords with good search volume, these rankings then have the potential to stay there (without any additional optimisation required) potentially for YEARS to come. I don’t know of any other form of marketing that can keep on returning that sort of value consistently, day after day, years after you have stopped paying for it. This again is a good thing to follow up with after you make this statement to the client as every business owner will be delighted with the prospect of still receiving traffic/leads/clients long after they have paid for the SEO services.
LEARN YOUR TRADE – Learning SEO techniques and tricks is the first and foremost part of starting your own SEO business. Do an extensive research on the topic and take up SEO courses either online or offline.
Not to fret, this is the first of a series of posts outlining how your business can be optimized for local search engine marketing. As a subset of a broader SEO marketing practices, basic local SEO encompasses the following three factors:
As simple as it may sound, but a lot of those strengths and weaknesses are not immediately clear and only become clear with experience and time and trying various things, which can take some years. Also, opportunities based on your strengths may not be readily available, so one needs to put focused effort in that direction. For ex., I have realized by now that there are some things I am really good at, they come natural to me (to the point that I was taking them for granted), and they happen to be difficult for a lot of people/competitors. So I am now trying to focus on that.
Having a good local Search Engine Optimization can help one to get a lot of the local presence of the brand and a lot of the local crowd. This gives way to more people to turn up at the particular location that one has chosen. This can help to talk to the people face to face and then create the good contact relation with the costumers.
“This course really covers all the things that people really need to know to start a SEO business. All the free forms are super and all you have to do is modify them to use them. The instructor does a fantastic job at describing everything need to open a business.” – Bill Brooks
The first thing you need to know is that there are unlimited freelancers and contractors in the digital marketing industry. You can find local freelancers or remote contractors everywhere. That being said, grow your SEO company by hiring freelancers first. Find a freelancer that you’d like to work with and hire them for your different projects. Pay them only when you get paid. You never want to pay your freelancers before you get paid. Maintaining positive cash flow is very important to keeping your business running. Only hire your freelancer or contractor when you have steady business for them. That could be after a few months or even years. There’s no need or reason to commit a salary to anyone until you are ready, and it’s totally OK if you’re never ready.
Design agencies often like such arrangements because they get to add an additional service without having the overhead of another staff member. They also get to click the ticket on your services. Your billing is also more streamlined, as you’re likely be billing the agency itself.
Create an online venue where you can promote your products and services, share information on the industry, and establish your authority as an SEO provider. If you don’t have a website yet, we can help you create one that is catchy, navigable, and search engine-friendly. If you already have one, we can audit your site and help you optimize it, both for the web and for your targeted niche.
The next step is to run some searches on Power Leads Pro X to harvest the details of all the printers, accountants, web designers and any other business that works on a business to business basis in your area. Once you have all the details of these businesses, first thing you should do is compose an email using the Power Leads Pro X mailing feature and send it out to every one of these businesses.
What an amazing course, i got a review copy from Aehs01 and i must admit that the course is so detailed. I didn’t took all the course but i took the most important videos. I do own a SEO company myself and definitely there are some amazing unknown ways on how to land new clients.
Citations (core online profiles) are both the #2 and #5 Google Map ranking factors. I always work with clients on Google My Business and Moz Local (since those are the most important profiles). But I outsource creating all the other profiles to Whitespark for $4-5 per citation. You can either upsell this to clients (eg. for $10 per citation) or refer them as a Whitesaprk affiliate and make a 10% is alway a tricky topic to discuss because everyone tends to price their SEO services a little different. Pricing is based on experience and industry standards. Since there is no turn key solution, pricing tends to fluctuate a lot in the SEO industry. It’s not like buying a printer or a car, so you have to be very strategic in order to get business. It’s also not an industry where the lowest bid wins the client. There are many factors that come in to play.
In my 10 years running an agency, the About Us page was the number one most visited page for us and all our service clients. Nothing else came close, not even our pages that showed previous work and case studies.
Newspapers are always looking for good, well written content that they can publish. If you can either write, or have a professional write, a solid, easy to understand article about SEO and how it affects businesses, then there is every chance that it could end up published in your local newspaper.
The one thing to keep in mind is that my agency actually provided results. From getting companies to rank in the top three results for terms like “credit cards” and “life insurance” to helping boost their sales, we provided a positive return on investment. If you do everything I mentioned above but fail to provide results as an SEO agency, you won’t be in business for long.
Local SEO is a very different ballgame than performing SEO for a single website and requires attention to additional signals. Here are a few pointers for what to do after registering your business with Google and Bing.
As you are done with learning SEO, now it’s time for the site. This is the crucial step in setting up an SEO business, as everyone will first have a look at your website, there is no way that clients will come to you directly and give the projects to you.
I don’t take on SEO clients per se but I’ve done some (highly priced) SEO consulting that one client told me at one of our monthly consulting call that he’d happily pay 5-10 times what I was charging him. And that was with him doing all the implementation of the plan I lined out.
Working for a family business or a steady corporation isn’t something to be looked down upon by any means. The key to mitigating the risks on both sides (getting laid off for example) is to be financially prudent, continually invest in yourself (earn a degree, start a side business), and be loyal to whom you work for or with. If you do those three things you will typically be ok in any reasonable situation.
Anything you can do at this point to instil fear and urgency in the client should be used, they must feel like if they don’t grab this opportunity now, they are going to be missing out and losing ground to their competitors (Which in reality is true).
The point I am trying to make is that a lot of people reading this may feel that it’s all too much for them and the fear of failure will prevent them from being able to succeed. I’m here to tell you that no matter who you are, you CAN succeed at running your own successful SEO business; you just need to take everything on board in this guide and actually put it in to practice.
Another thing to keep in mind, beyond the health insurance, is that unless you start one there’s no retirement benefit, no paid vacation time, and no paid sick time. It is a really good idea to purchase short-term and long-term disability insurance for yourself as well.
I’ve had a client who took so long to pay me for delivered (in fact, over-delievered) services, his wife had a baby… no, she actually did, and she wasn’t pregnant when I sent the invoice. I learned my lesson the hardway, if you’re reading this – no excuses for falling into the same trap.
It’s easy to assume the buyer has all the power, but this isn’t true. If they’re talking to you, they have already indicated they want what you have. You are offering something that grows their business.
