If you really wanted to start an SEO business, then you must have a mindset to acquire new things. For most people, this learning curve may take a few years, but if you are a well-known expert who already knows SEO, then you must sharp your skills by learning new SEO techniques.
Although I think the title is a bit misleading, should be more like “How I Built a 7 Figure SEO Agency and What Any Business Owner Can Learn From It.” These same lessons apply to consultants, lawyers, realtors, you name it.
Knowing how to set up a structure for your business might seem basic; “I’m going to start an SEO business because I know SEO”. However, there are things to consider that are involved with your business.
The trick with any of these approaches is to find a niche, preferably one that is growing quickly. Okay, the SEO consultant market is swamped due to low barriers to entry, but perhaps the SEO provider market in your home town isn’t.
The competition in the SEO industry is very stiff and one of the factors responsible for the high competitiveness is the low entry barrier. Anybody can wake up and claim to be an SEO expert, this is why there are a lot of charlatans in the industry.

Thank you Neil, this post is full of nuggets! We will take what we are not doing now and change. One question, what’s your advice on signed agreements with Clients? Is 30 day, mth to mth good? On one hand you don’t want to make people feel trapped and on the other you don’t want them to quit on a whim without at least being with you for 6-12mths. Is the industry standard of 1-2yr good enough? What’s a good balance between sustainable revenue for agency, and good commitment & partnership between an agency and a Client?

3. “Advertise.” Seriously, that’s it! Once you have a website and an idea of how much you are going to charge people, you just need to tell people that you have a website and how much you are going to charge them! SEO is so easy, I don’t know why everybody doesn’t do it.
Although the demand for SEO increases consistently, you have to remember that it is still a discretion-based industry and not a need-based one. You have to chase people and convince them that they need your services. Start talking and show them that you are the local online marketing expert. Hit the streets, get to know the local business owners, and keep on bothering them until they say yes.
Another thing to think about if you’re cash rich but time poor, especially with many people leaving the SEO game, is to buy an existing SEO business. You’re buying existing contracts and/or a client list, and you may be able to pick up some skilled employees, too. Buying a business is a topic in itself and outside the scope of this article, however it’s an avenue to think about especially if you are capital rich and time poor. You may be able to such a business part time, as you have less pressure to develop new business from scratch and the existing employees can handle the work at the coal face and deal with clients during the day.
My SEO company landed the business of many of the top real estate firms in Chicago simply by adding our name and link in the bottom of a small real estate agent’s website we were working with. Last year, Google increased the width of the main search results area to 600px. In light of this, the generally acceptable length for title tags is approximately 50 to 60 characters, and description tags can be approximately 160 to 200 characters. Take advantage of this space and use it wisely — and make sure you double-check that your titles and descriptions aren’t getting cut off in search results.
I do offer one caution about learning SEO from the Internet. There is an abundance of information out there, some good, and much bad. Another option for starting an SEO business is via a franchise. The problem with this method is that there are not many Internet marketing franchises available today. There are one or two that have had some success as a seller of franchises, but if you dig a little deeper you will find that very few franchisees have found success. One issue with the SEO franchise model is the cost. The upfront cost for one Internet marketing franchise we researched was between $65,000 and $100,000 in terms of the starting up, and included hefty ongoing fees and royalty payments.
It’s easy to assume the buyer has all the power, but this isn’t true. If they’re talking to you, they have already indicated they want what you have. You are offering something that grows their business.
