Never ever guarantee anything. Tell them that your services are based on your best efforts and depending on a series of factors, results may depend on both timing and costs. Steer away from promising high rankings in 30 days or less. That will kill your business and you did not even start yet.
Knowledge/Previous experiences with SEO companies: I always ask them first of all what they know about SEO and have they ever hired an SEO business for their business before. This will let you know where you stand in terms of what their expectations and previous experience may be. For example, I’ve worked with clients in the past who have hired SEO companies before that have not delivered on any of the ‘promises’ they made and have left a bad taste in the business owner’s mouth. In these instances, you have to work hard to build trust with the client and explain exactly how you are going to deliver the client their desired results.
As SEO Consulting service provider your job will be to analyze client’s websites and suggesting them what could be done to get their sites to rank higher in search engines. If you are not an expert in website creation and SEO, there are a number of training courses you can take to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to start this business. You can also hire SEO experts to work for you. However, expertise in basic skills of website development and SEO is highly advisable.
I frequently read your blog posts., recently i came across a news that google+ doesn’t effect your rankings (webpronews.com/the-google-1-button-has-no-direct-effect-on-rankings-2012-10) , so according to the blog post getting more Goolge +1’s is only for persons that we are following or followers within your network..,
Moreover, to protect yourself from those who make such false claims, be aware of the concept of “white hat” versus “black hat” SEO advice. As a former technical writer in the IT security field, I was already aware of the concept: there are folks who choose to play by the rules and others who choose not to. The “rules” of SEO are the official webmaster guidelines set forth by the search engines, Google and Bing.
My advice to anyone who is looking to start an SEO business is actually learn how to do SEO on your own sites for a period of time before actually taking on clients, test numerous things and actually do some heavy research first.
Once you begin to make some cash on the side, see how far you can scale it (reasonably) before you need to make a decision on whether to fully jump in or whether to keep it as a side gig where you can eventually outsource a good chunk of the tedious work.
In light of all the recent hubbub about JC Penney, David at Distilled wrote up a great post asking whether competitors can use spammy links to harm your site. He explains how to find shady links and get them removed.
There is a lot of crappy advice these days and its easy to get sucked into the get rich quick douchey ads you see on the internet about how easy it is to do this. The truth of the matter is that it takes a ton of work to build your agency and it takes a number of trusted partners (like Marketer’s Center) to get all your services down.
I would then take their current conversion rate, let’s say 2%, and their average value per sale, let’s say $100 dollars, and show that 9,400 extra visitors could give them $18,800 a month in extra revenue. I would then do this for each of their keywords and estimate how much more money I could make them each month.
Never short change yourself. Believe in the quality of the service you can offer and stand by your pricing structure. Your customers will appreciate your service and what they pay when they start to see the results.
When my first venture failed, I decided I was going to quit entrepreneurship, get a college degree like everyone else, and get a job after graduation. To get a head start on things, I started taking college classes while I was in high school.
I am always trying to give information out, even though I often feel that I’m working for free (my FD certainly thinks so!) as it just builds your reputation as the go to expert when people have a problem that they cannot solve.
If a search engine does not know in what city or district you provide your services, it will not rank your site in top 10 on the local search query, so your potential client will probably not find you.
What I’m about to show you, is something I never had. A step by step, ultimate guide on how to start a SEO business. I had to learn everything through trial and error, which took an incredible amount of time and energy. I wish someone had posted a detailed guide that would have saved me the time and money I spent learning the business side of SEO. That being said, I’m going to tell you everything I learned starting a successful SEO business and going from making a few hundred dollars a month to making over $120,000 per month. Eventually, my SEO company was so successful a huge agency in Chicago acquired it, which is how and why I founded MySiteAuditor. But that’s another story.
Unless you plan on doing this all yourself, you’ll end up needing writers, designers, link builders, and other specialists to keep the wheels turning. Get your systems put in place before you need them because you don’t want to start putting together these processes at the last minute. Shameless plug: At Marketer’s Center we have a lot of these systems already cranking, scaling can be plug and play if you want to use our services as well.
by the way, that is a very indiscreet question and you will probably not want to answer them but I would like to know what is a realistic revenue an SEO company could make with, lets say, three assistents? Any idea if Europe is more difficult than US? Most of the companies are so conservative here and dont understand the value of IM 🙁
Follow industry leaders on Twitter, rack up endorsements on LinkedIn, build up your circles on Google+, and, most importantly, start creating content that solves the problems of your target audience on your website.
You might think self-employment is all about working less, spending more time with your family, going to the beach while everyone else is in a cubicle, and all that jazz. While it certainly can be at some point, it is not how you will start out 99% of the time.
