Thanks. Basically for a while now I have been looking into starting a digital marketing agency and only in the past year or so started studying more seriously from sources such as yourself and Brian. Also, I started studying about sales at the same time. My end goal for this project is to have a strong,self-funded business with offices around Europe, but for the basics I think that I need someone to be my head of sales and another person to be the head of seo or something like that, because I do not have enough experience to do these on my own yet. The couple of questions I wanted to ask you at this point are the following:
There may be a lack of any specific qualifications so there is seemingly a low barrier to entry – you can’t do a PHD in search engine optimisation and even if you could it would be horribly out of date by the time you had finished it.
Editing all of those directories can be time consuming, especially when you’re trying to run a business! Check out Vistaprint’s Local Listings service, which makes it very easy to submit your NAP data to directory data aggregators. It will also highlight where incorrect NAP data exists and correct it for you, all in one click!
Social Media Marketing (covers creating fresh, compelling content and drawing followers [and the ultimate goal, sales] via many online venues, such as Facebook, Twitter, Google+, LinkedIn, YouTube, Flickr, FourSquare, Pinterest, and many more)
Hey Neil – I’ve used some of these strategies myself to build up a 7 figure agency at Powered by Search. As the business has built up we don’t tend to do a lot of ‘free’ work anymore but we do quite a bit of pro-bono work for non-profits who need our help.
Structured data markup — often referred to as “schema markup” or “schema.org markup” — can be added to your website’s code to provide search engines with more information about your business, like the products you sell, reviews you’ve collected, services you offer and so on.
Whether it’s for a startup or a new business, these 11 steps will help your SEO efforts be more successful. Of course, once you launch a business the keywords and content your care about may change, but the game remains the same.
So if you are going to get and keep your clients loyal, then you must do a good job educating them about the importance / benefits of SEO to their business. You will also need to teach them how to measure their SEO results and growth. Thereby making them understand what you are doing and appreciate your efforts. However, this will cost you not just money but also time.
The easiest and cheapest option is to buy a fully customisable professional theme. Some of the best themes I’ve seen online so far that is perfect for exactly what we need are the Studio Press themes. They look very professional and are fully customisable! Click here to check them out for yourself.
Hi Gotch, this is like a manifesto of my life! So much of what you write resonates with me it’s scary. Of all your points I think the one that is THE most liberating, as a local SEO, is getting rid of clients who are demanding, time wasting, blood sucking leaches. Once I had the first “sacking” under my belt life as an SEO became so much easier.
Interesting article! Although I know quite a bit about SEO, I don’t think I would ever want to start an SEO company. One reason is that some shady SEO companies are ruining it for everyone by sending out mass spam emails. Check your spam box – probably 50 from people selling male enhancement products and 10 from SEO services claiming to make your traffic skyrocket. These emails leave a bad taste in people’s mouths. Another reason is that Google keeps changing their ranking algo. This will most likely lead to unhappy customers is they get deindexed or slapped in the rankings regardless of whether it is your fault or not.
Life is too short to spend it doing the things you don’t like. But, life is too short to stay poor also! An SEO business lets you be your own boss and also earn a living doing that. The freedom and flexibility it gives you is real-tempting.
3. “Advertise.” Seriously, that’s it! Once you have a website and an idea of how much you are going to charge people, you just need to tell people that you have a website and how much you are going to charge them! SEO is so easy, I don’t know why everybody doesn’t do it.

You get to the exhibition and find loads of stunning paintings hung on the wall attracting lots of attention from other people. You really like your friend’s artistic style and one painting in particular has caught your eye. You want to buy it badly, but simply can’t afford it.
Great Article on the basics of SEO but there is so much more to it. THe Keyword Research if the most vital part before doing all of the basics you have to be spot on or your search engine optimization campaign will be a disaster. understanding what phrases cause a action you are desiring on your site and what has the most traffic are two different things and there needs to me a clear understanding of this before you start.
Thanks for the great post! I also read your recent one with the site review sample for your website. Do you have any sample proposals that indicate all of the ideas you talked about? It’s hard for me to visualize this for some reason and I think it would be super helpful. Thanks for your time!
Don’t make it too long. Search engines only display about 70 characters in a title tag. I say “about” because it’s technically measured in pixels. You can count pixels, right? No? Well, in that case, you’re best off using a snippet simulator like this one. It lets you see exactly how your website will look in a search result.
Once you’ve added your email message you can then the software to dynamically add certain details of the listing in to the email using token variables. This means you can add the business name, the city the business is in, the amount of back links the business’s website has and lots of other information that is totally unique to their business.
The first thing you need to prepare is a plan of action report. This is what you will present to the business owner(s) at the meeting as you talk them through what the process will be and how it will increase their website traffic and ultimately get them more leads/customers. I lay mine out like this:
However, at no point should you be pushy with the client. Throughout the entire meeting I always give off the attitude of ‘I’m the expert in this, I have explained why you NEED this service and if you don’t decide to sign up to it, I’ve got a number of your competitors waiting to sign up should you turn this opportunity down’.
The easiest way to do to this is to get in touch your existing customer base and see if they’d be interested in leaving you a review. You could perhaps offer them incentives in the form of discounts to leave a good word about your business. If you do happen to get negative reviews, don’t ignore them! Acknowledge negative feedback and respond to them nicely. Your aim is to diffuse the situation and possibly make an offer to make up for whatever their dissatisfaction was. This lets potential customers know you’re sincere about improving your business to serve them better.
by the way, that is a very indiscreet question and you will probably not want to answer them but I would like to know what is a realistic revenue an SEO company could make with, lets say, three assistents? Any idea if Europe is more difficult than US? Most of the companies are so conservative here and dont understand the value of IM 🙁
Who is involved and what are their skills? Do you plan to hire more staff? At what milestones? What plans do you have for training and retention? You need not solve this problem in house, of course. Your plan could involve using contractors as and when required.
When people hear the words ‘cold calling’, it often makes them want to run for the hills. However, it still is, and probably always will be, one of the most effective, quickest and cheapest ways to generate new clients for your business.
The most important lesson I learned was to set the proper expectations with my clients right off the start. I found myself answering too many calls and wasting so much time dealing with needy customers. Now I simply let all my customers know how MY process works. Now I will answer any questions over email and we can have a monthly call to discuss progress if scheduled in advance. Eliminating the sky is falling calls.
“SEO is a cumulative process. If you start now, by the time your competitors catch on they’ll already be months or years behind you. And they’ll have to spend thousands to catch up. On the other hand, if you wait…it could be you playing a desperate game of catch-up” – This statement, for me, sums up why the potential client NEEDS to be buying the SEO services you are offering. It instils the urgency to get moving on it quick, plants the seed of fear about their competitors getting the jump on them and the possibility of it costing them even more money in future to try and get on an even keel with their competitors again.
“Help out bloggers” is i think the most prominent one now, as many novice writers out there are simply resorting to the blogging mode to increase their reach to the readers. So, reaching out to new bloggers, and established ones too will surely help you to make your business flow in the recent times and new SEO trends.
I am just starting out and am having a lot of interest shown in my assistance, but since I don’t have case studies to base my value proposition off of, I am getting some pushback and had a recent proposition. An E-commerce site suggested that I provide them with SEO. They are currently averaging 250 conversions a day at $5-$8 per sale (a decal company). They said that they would pay me 20% of any increase in business I could bring in. I need to put food on the table for my family. I’ll work hard on getting other clients, but is this a good endeavor to go after? Where would you start with getting them more site traffic quickly? I will use all your info from Marketing school to build Funnels and Retarget them if they leave, but where would you start on-site.
