Thank you for your post, it made for a very interesting and well worthy read. I am from the UK and going for a second job interview with a local SEO company very soon. One of the tasks in my interview is to present to them how I will drive new business for their company. They currently only work from referrals but want to rapidly expand their client base. I have been studying my socks off learn all I can about SEO and how to drive business. The main way, I can think of personally, would be to cold call local businesses. Now I understand that if we ‘were that good an SEO company then we shouldn’t have to cold call’, but my argument is that we would just be using any advantage we can in order to develop our business. They already use Twitter and Facebook and go to shows and seminars etc. Do you think cold calling would be a useful way to drive business into an already reasonably well established SEO organisation? Hey Neil – I’ve used some of these strategies myself to build up a 7 figure agency at Powered by Search. As the business has built up we don’t tend to do a lot of ‘free’ work anymore but we do quite a bit of pro-bono work for non-profits who need our help.

We all know SEO is a competitive industry so geographically target businesses in your local area can be a great place to start. Simply putting your city name in your domain name will also get you some quick wins.

The best place to hide a website is Page 2 of a google search result! Unless a company website finds itself on the first page of a search engine result, chances are very slim for it to get much viewers and customers.

The problem is that self-employment, especially if you’ve worked in the corporate world before, has all the allure of the pipe dreams sold in The 4 Hour Work Week (I guess Tim Ferris doesn’t count self-promotion as work, even though he does it about 100 hours a week 🙂 ).

    It is much better if you own a website or else you should create a website and then rank your site as much as you can. Then share the SEO tips in your blog and try to get some of the potential audience, where you can convert them into your customers in the long run.
