Normally the service is a long-term arrangement as clients need to maintain their rankings. You can increase your earnings by offering additional related services such as website creation and website design.

This is more of an open question to everyone – does anyone know a more up-to-date version of the Jim Boykin table Neil linked to in the 2nd paragraph beneath “Be Results Driven” for click rate for top 10 search results? I’d love to use this strategy but I imagine these figures are much different nowadays.

or even a fee that you would have to cover if you already have a corporate job, but if you work for a small business (or own your own business) almost no health insurance plans will cover maternity, or will only do so at a significant cost increase … and whenever you get any health services in the US without having health insurance they charge you 3x 5x or sometimes even 100x what they charge insured people, basically trying to bankrupt you through a sleazy program of cost shifting.

Pricing is alway a tricky topic to discuss because everyone tends to price their SEO services a little different. Pricing is based on experience and industry standards. Since there is no turn key solution, pricing tends to fluctuate a lot in the SEO industry. It’s not like buying a printer or a car, so you have to be very strategic in order to get business. It’s also not an industry where the lowest bid wins the client. There are many factors that come in to play.

Solid advice you’re serving here, based on my own experience. I’d like to add a couple of thoughts. First, I think it’s important to reiterate the need to stay current. You simply cannot fall asleep at the wheel and continue to sustain a career. Second, as a generalist, I think you need to maintain a broad knowledge of the best tools and resources available for the job. SEO’s are excellent about sharing that information too, it’s just you can spend a lot of time wading in the mud before you look up and see that clear sky above you.

Google and Facebook are always looking for ways to minimize the effectiveness of organic (free) channels by limiting its real-estate predominance (80% of Google SERPs, above the fold, are paid ad listings) or reach (Prepare for 0% reach for Facebook posts).

I’ve struggled with whether I want to work for clients or work on my own authority site. I know there is good money in both. I am willing to bet that the folks ranking at the top for stuff like “best hosting” or “hosting reviews” etc must make at least 40k a month. You can make the same amount with an agency but then you would also have to deal with clients.

On site SEO- On site optimization is a huge topic to cover. I would rather cover this topic in my future posts. You can focus on optimizing your website for local search keywords. Also you can implement these basic SEO tips to optimize your website for Google.

Google My Business (GMB) is considered a directory, but it’s a biggie, so it deserves its own section. It’s very important for local businesses to claim their Google My Business (and Bing Places for Business) page. It’s free and can get you incredible exposure if you’re optimized enough to show up in Google’s local three-pack:

The first thing you need to know is that there are unlimited freelancers and contractors in the digital marketing industry. You can find local freelancers or remote contractors everywhere. That being said, grow your SEO company by hiring freelancers first. Find a freelancer that you’d like to work with and hire them for your different projects. Pay them only when you get paid. You never want to pay your freelancers before you get paid. Maintaining positive cash flow is very important to keeping your business running. Only hire your freelancer or contractor when you have steady business for them.  That could be after a few months or even years. There’s no need or reason to commit a salary to anyone until you are ready, and it’s totally OK if you’re never ready.

These can be hard to estimate, so calculate a best case scenario, a worst case scenario, and something in the middle. This gives you a range to think about, and how you might deal with various outcomes should they arise.

Got permissions from the customers, you can make some EDMs about the products, and then send to them in a special time. Not only can get the high exposures, but also can get some return customers and traffic.

“I’m calling because I emailed the business owner a couple of days ago regarding a local joint venture business opportunity and am yet to hear back from them. I thought I’d just follow up with a phone call to make sure that the email reached the right person.”

Pretty basic question for an SEO right? It would be nice if the answer were equally as basic or simple. It’s an important question, even more so since a sweeping update by Google knocked out unsuspecting webmasters.

Creating a subscription-based pricing model could create a long-lasting relationship, allowing you to develop and deliver success to your clients while maintaining a budgetable, recurring income for your business.

What I started doing was estimating how much more traffic I could drive to the companies. I would take their current rankings and use the multiplier from this table. So, if they ranked #6 for a keyword that drove them 1,000 visitors a month and I thought I could take them to #1, I would estimate that I could drive them 10,400 visitors, which is 9,400 extra visitors than they currently have.

I’ve also experienced the frustration of self-purchased health insurance. Aside from taxes, it’s my largest expense- and they fight me on everything. It’s a constant battle to get things covered and their argument is always that “I’m not part of a group so exceptions apply”. I’ve seriously considered canceling it and just sticking the money in an account for a sort of self-insurance. Of course, when a few days hospital stay can cost six-figures it’s never that easy.

If you’re new to the business, you might think you need a great website to start, not true. While an excellent looking website helps, I’ve seen many SEOs sell their asses off with rough-looking websites or no website at all. So don’t let this be a reason to hold you back from starting initially, it’s just not a core factor to your success.
Also wanted to give you a quick heads up that your SEOforBeginners.com link in the Education section isn’t properly linking out – it looks like you’re missing the all-important http:// part on that particular educational resource link my friend!
Keep in mind that is easy to rank for a unique brand name. If it’s unique, it tends to be memorable. So my two cents for anyone in a crowded industry is to go for the unique over the generic and descriptive. You can also tack on a byline to the end of your name to remove any uncertainty.
If you have location or sell through the channel, get your locations or agents up on mobile geo-optimized landing pages and put inbound links from all the major social profile pages pointing to their profile page.
