You convince a prospect to sign up to have you perform SEO services on their website to target 10 keywords. You previously checked the price that the SEO reseller company charges to optimise 10 keywords per month. In this example, let’s say that the SEO reseller company charges £250 (~US$400) for SEO services on 10 keywords per month.
And if you are stupid enough to expect someone to write and frequently update an entire business plan for you publicly FOR FREE & guarantee success with it, let me know if there is some market instrument to bet against you, as I will gladly make that wager all day long.
When people hear the words ‘cold calling’, it often makes them want to run for the hills. However, it still is, and probably always will be, one of the most effective, quickest and cheapest ways to generate new clients for your business.
What does make a difference though, is your broad experience base and how much you can apply it to the work you and your coworkers are doing. experience with things like managing social media campaigns, email campaigns, and usability.
The biggest challenge relates to trust. SEO and Internet marketers have become the used car salesmen of tech (no offense to used car salesmen!). There are several reasons why business owners do not trust SEO agencies:
As you are done with learning SEO, now it’s time for the site. This is the crucial step in setting up an SEO business, as everyone will first have a look at your website, there is no way that clients will come to you directly and give the projects to you.
2. Understand how to develop targeted traffic to a website. If you have clients paying you money for your services, then you need to be able to increase their traffic. Not only traffic, you must be able to grow their business because that is their ultimate aim.
Ahrefs has grown in popularity among digital markers and SEO managers. A main feature of Ahrefs is insights on your competitors. By analyzing your competitor’s activity, you can make better-informed decisions about SEO strategy. Ahrefs also provides tools for finding content and keywords, checking backlinks, and crawling your website. Ahrefs offers advanced analytics so you can track your website. The people you meet in this industry are extraordinary. They are very willing, often surprisingly so, to help out their peers and up-and-comers – note how much of their “proprietary” knowledge is shared with one another in the blogs and through social media, all for free! In my experience, when my contract position with Bing Webmaster Center expired, I was unsure if could continue in the field, given my relatively short experience. In that Bing role, I happened to have met Rand Fishkin several times, one of the kindest and friendliest people I know (oh, and coincidently also the CEO and co-founder of the highly respected SEOmoz, and without question, one of the SEO industry’s top thought leaders). He gave me an invaluable piece of advice, which I will share here with you.
As an entrepreneur, you have to get to the point where you simply stop explaining your vision to your family and friends – they’re just not going to get it. We’re wired to seek security and I guess a job provides security in many people’s minds.
I can’t stress enough the financial burden you carry, especially if you are a single-income household with a family, in a volatile industry that is further impacted by a recession; and oh yeah, often unrealistic clients 🙂 and competitors trying to make SEO a commodity through pricing & crappy solutions. To minimize your own stress, you need to already have a rainy-day fund (which you should keep building for when the $h#% hits the fan), an accepted family budget that you can stick to, access to credit or cash when you need it, and a well-defined profit margin for your services. Flying solo, YOU are the inventory — you have to be able to SELL yourself & services — then be prepared to change hats & deliver the goods…..day in & day out. Oh yeah, you have to somehow keep a pipeline of new opportunities b/c we all know there is a life cycle with SEO client work. Your rainy day fund helps bridge the gap in between work. I highly recommend 6-month+ contracts that yield you recurring revenue — this gives predictability and consistent cash flow you can manage.
Wow, Awesome post! So stuff here . . . I’m starting a freelance web development business and this will be invaluable information. These are the kinds of SEO questions I wanted to know so I thank you for putting it all together in one place. This is a great guide and I will start to fully look through all of the links and resources you’ve recommended!
If you’re the CEO, it’s not really your job to do this. If you’re a director of online marketing, it’s likely you don’t have the time to do this. You need somebody who will work cross-group and who can focus on this.
Don’t make it too long. Search engines only display about 70 characters in a title tag. I say “about” because it’s technically measured in pixels. You can count pixels, right? No? Well, in that case, you’re best off using a snippet simulator like this one. It lets you see exactly how your website will look in a search result.
Am currently working on setting up my own site and looking at options to partner with an good local /offshore SEO company where i can re-bill the chargers to my customer after being billed myself for the work. Neil, great article shows me that their is a lot of potential in the SEO business even though it’s going so mainstream. I want to ask you your opinion of a business motto i’m currently working on, whether or not you think it could be profitable for me.
Again, I’m not an attorney, but this is what I did. I waited a few months before creating an LLC for my business. I made a little money first, then incorporated. The reason I did this is because incorporating costs money. In Illinois it’s about $500-$600, plus $250 per year. No need to waste that money if you never get business. I asked my accountant, Gaurang Patel of Southloop CPA in Chicago, IL, about this. Here’s what he said:
There are lots of SEO experts around, and one option, besides working for a company, is to offer consulting services to other businesses too. However, if you choose this path, you will have to invest in education, marketing and business organization if you want to obtain some profit too.
I agree with most of what you said here except for the link building aspects. Building links is still the most important aspect to SEO and there is no white hat, black hat or organic. It’s all black hat if you’re trying to manipulate the search in any way. I don’t have a problem with it at all – just saying a link is a link.
Although I think the title is a bit misleading, should be more like “How I Built a 7 Figure SEO Agency and What Any Business Owner Can Learn From It.” These same lessons apply to consultants, lawyers, realtors, you name it.
“If you decide to work with us then you are the only [insert industry] we will be working with in [insert city/country/continent].” – Explain that while you have been in contact with other businesses in their niche/area/industry, if they subscribe to your SEO services, it will come with a guarantee that they will be the only organisation you work with in that niche/industry in that city/country/continent. Obviously amend this based on what sort of company you are pitching to, a local accountant for example will be slightly different to a multi-national company operating in numerous countries.
