This similarity in the contents can lead to the lowering of the ranks of the website. In case the website has wrong name and contact number, it can cause a lot of issues in them. But this misconception has to be eradicated as soon as possible.
The most important aspect of your Yellow Pages ad is the copy; get this right and you can make a very healthy ROI but get it wrong and you’ll end up haemorrhaging money on it. One of the best books I’ve read about getting your print advertising spot on is Ca$hvertising.
E.g., I remember a project – the client had some money to spend (a government agency) and had some very vague idea. There was no clearly defined scope with clearly set expectations of deliverables. I took it. Man, it backfired. It turned out there were several other people in the picture, “stakeholders” as they would call them in my field, and they all had strong and loud ideas for what they wanted to be done, and there was no consensus. I ended up spending endless time facilitating endless discussions with them of what should be done etc etc etc, all of which after the contract was already in place. The end result: I spent ridiculous amounts of time, nobody was happy, the amount of money was small and totally not worth it, and I was to blame for everything. Man, I learned a lot from that one project.
Since your core task as an SEO company is to increase your clients’ organic traffic, which in turn will increase their conversion / revenue; then it is necessary you know some of the basics terms and how they work. Examples of such terms include:
First of all. Learn the basics of search engine optimization for Google. They’re still the biggest player in the cyberspace. Secondly, understand the market. Regardless of your niche you have to research and grasp:
At worst wear trousers, a shirt and a tie. It’s all very well lounging about in your pyjamas at home working but when meeting real, offline world business people; you have to make a bit of effort if you want them to part with their hard earned money.
Don’t get me wrong, this takes a lot of hard work to do, but essentially you only need to know the basics of SEO to get started. There are lots of sites online that you can learn how to do this (OnlineIncomeTeacher is a good place to start!), but once you learn, you can begin to turn it into a business.
With affiliate programs once the visitor hits your site you make money right away. With a SEO agency once the prospective visitor hits your site you still have to sell them and then do the actual work.
In any case, photography technique is something we know a lot about and this would probably be the most through knowledge we could give back. Similarly, leads (small businesses that sell products) who can’t afford to hire us may try to photograph their products themselves & at this point we could connect with them until they are large enough to outsource their photography.
Also, traffic for SEO keywords for huge cities like “SEO Los Angeles” and “SEO Chicago” is extremely low (despite the very high KD) compared to traffic for things like “best office chair” which has more volume but a lower LTV…
Thanks. Basically for a while now I have been looking into starting a digital marketing agency and only in the past year or so started studying more seriously from sources such as yourself and Brian. Also, I started studying about sales at the same time. My end goal for this project is to have a strong,self-funded business with offices around Europe, but for the basics I think that I need someone to be my head of sales and another person to be the head of seo or something like that, because I do not have enough experience to do these on my own yet. The couple of questions I wanted to ask you at this point are the following:
I once read from an agency owner that it’s impossible to scale if you have 30+ client meetings a month. I don’t agree! I believe keeping that connection is important if you want clients to stay with you for the long-haul. And if you don’t have the time to make many of the meetings, get an account manager that can.
2,000 Words – Hardly anyone does this because they are super lazy or just don’t know that this simple strategy works like a charm. If you’re targeting “SEO Albany” on your your SEO services page, then make sure that page has at least 2,000+ well written words or more. This worked for me and the data has shown this to work as well. Check out this graph below by serpIQ. As you can see, there is a direct correlation between having more words on a page and higher rankings in Google.
“SEO has the highest long term ROI of any form of marketing.” – This is something I say which some people may not agree with but here’s why I think it’s true; When SEO is done properly and ethically, and you achieve top ranking results across targeted keywords with good search volume, these rankings then have the potential to stay there (without any additional optimisation required) potentially for YEARS to come. I don’t know of any other form of marketing that can keep returning that sort of value consistently, day after day, years after you have stopped paying for it. This again is a good thing to follow up with after you make this statement to the client as every business owner will be delighted with the prospect of still receiving traffic/leads/clients long after they have paid for the SEO services.
Simply put, a citation is a “mention” of your business name on webpages other than your own, followed by your address, phone number, or both, regardless of whether there is a link to your website or not.
What is your current position? What is your background? What is the purpose of your business? What is your competitive advantage? Who are your competitors? How will you exploit their weaknesses, and counter their strengths? How will you increase capability and capacity? How do you plan to grow?
Once you begin to make some cash on the side, see how far you can scale it (reasonably) before you need to make a decision on whether to fully jump in or whether to keep it as a side gig where you can eventually outsource a good chunk of the tedious work.

I’ve been running some similar experiments over the past few months and found that it does earn some short-term wins, but CTR has to be consistently high to ensure that rankings will stabilize. You also need to reduce bounces from search, as this is a negative signal to Google.
Clients only care about results. You can provide all the reports on all the great services you provided, but if they are not getting new customers then it is only a matter of time before they leave you.
The problem? Google Analytics doesn’t provide keywords so you can’t measure them. And you can’t rankings by Google organic, local pack, Bing organic, Bing pack, etc. And Google Search Console’s search analytics is only decent for very basic keyword reporting.
You then decide you’d like a 100% mark up on this deal so you get your client to pay you £500 (~US$800) per month for the SEO services on the 10 keywords every month. So you end up profiting to the tune of £250 (~US$400) per month for the duration of that deal.
What I’m about to show you, is something I never had. A step by step, ultimate guide on how to start a SEO business. I had to learn everything through trial and error, which took an incredible amount of time and energy. I wish someone had posted a detailed guide that would have saved me the time and money I spent learning the business side of SEO. That being said, I’m going to tell you everything I learned starting a successful SEO business and going from making a few hundred dollars a month to making over $120,000 per month. Eventually, my SEO company was so successful a huge agency in Chicago acquired it, which is how and why I founded MySiteAuditor. But that’s another story.
Anything you can do at this point to instil fear and urgency in the client should be used, they must feel like if they don’t grab this opportunity now, they are going to be missing out and losing ground to their competitors (Which in reality is true).
We all want to become our own bosses right from the start, but truth is that you need to work somewhere for at least one year. And not necessarily because you gather knowledge, but because you gain an insight view into a business. You see how things work, you get to go to various conferences on this topic, know people from the field and so on. All this is going to be really useful when you will start your own company.
Killer post and very similar to how we created https://liftedwebsites.com/ with a few new things to consider so thanks. To add to the tools section Ahrefs/SEMrush we use every day, and education section backlinko is another great source. Thanks again for sharing your story.
See when you first started your SEO agency. What kind of tactics did you use? I know you can use white-hat SEO and with strong content you can climb to #1 and for black-hat SEO is basically spam. What am trying to say is when you first joined “Elpac” and started to do SEO for them, did you just basically spam your way to the top because I know back in 2012/2013 you could climb your way to the top by just simply spamming your keywords – manually build backlinks use tools. I know the algorithms always change and every time it gets harder. See what would you do? SPAM your way to the top or do it the legit away? (I don’t even think there is a legit way and there’s only one way). What would you say to a beginner what kind of tactics should I do? Am not asking to give up your secret.
Other than this, you should learn the steps about directing traffic to a website. A website exists because it has visitors. If you have clients who monetize your effort, you should increase their traffic. Other than traffic, you need to improve their sales.
