“how to start a local seo business optimising search engine results”

You’re opinion is correct if you think people getting paid thousands of dollars to do fundamental SEO anyone could figure out in a week of research using Google is true. I’m sure this does happen or has happened.

Whether it’s for a startup or a new business, these 11 steps will help your SEO efforts be more successful. Of course, once you launch a business the keywords and content your care about may change, but the game remains the same.

Google My Business (GMB) is considered a directory, but it’s a biggie, so it deserves its own section. It’s very important for local businesses to claim their Google My Business (and Bing Places for Business) page. It’s free and can get you incredible exposure if you’re optimized enough to show up in Google’s local three-pack:

I have been constantly improving that audit throughout the last 4 years of doing full-time SEO consulting. You should find it super helpful and can tweak it however you like. I would charge $500 for a micro audit (8 pages) and $900 for a full audit (15 pages). This is a simple pricing structure and will be affordable for any serious client.

I’ve struggled with whether I want to work for clients or work on my own authority site. I know there is good money in both. I am willing to bet that the folks ranking at the top for stuff like “best hosting” or “hosting reviews” etc must make at least 40k a month. You can make the same amount with an agency but then you would also have to deal with clients.

Thanks for your advice. I request to provide your suggestions for choosing the best agency for SEO. I started a blog “http://www.bestsmartphoneunder.com/” and looking for the best agency to make my keywords rank and to increase the count of my site visitors. As I’m new to industry, I want not much aware of choosing the agency. So please help me out.

Optimizely is an A/B testing tool that businesses can use to better their websites. A/B testing is a method used by digital marketers and web designers to analyze two types of a webpages, landing pages or websites and determine which one is better received using live analytics. Even if it’s a subtle change, like adjusted colors or differing design elements, A/B testing can provide worthwhile insights. Optimizely plans start at $17 per month.

One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is to keep organized. As the clients begin to come in, files and resources can become extremely disorganized. The more organized you are the higher your quality and output will be.

From reading sites like Search Engine Watch and SEObook, I started getting the hang of SEO. I made on-page changes to my own site, and learned how to build links by talking to people like Patrick Gavin on a weekly basis.

If you have some experience with search engine optimisation and would like to start your own SEO company, then this article will make for an interesting read. Here, you will get detailed coverage of how you get set up and enjoy a profitable SEO business in just 4 steps.

The problem is that self-employment, especially if you’ve worked in the corporate world before, has all the allure of the pipe dreams sold in The 4 Hour Work Week (I guess Tim Ferris doesn’t count self-promotion as work, even though he does it about 100 hours a week 🙂 ).

But do remember to write for a human, not just a search engine. Though it’s important to have valuable keywords in your title tag, if it looks odd to a user (e.g., “Boston Cheeseburgers, Best Cheeseburgers, Cheeseburgers”) then you’ll be missing out on a bunch of traffic that thought “Mike’s Grill – Cheeseburgers, Shakes & More” sounded more like a real person.

Thank you, Kifeda! I hope it’s enough as well, but you know, there’s never enough information — I learn more everyday in this business. And that’s one of the things I like best. I look up and see the sky — a near infinite world of knowledge yet to be explored. But let’s try. Thanks for reading!

Thank you for the comment and that’s awesome to hear! YES, do not waste your time with those clients. Your business should make you happy and you should want to get up and work on it everyday. If any client is making you feel otherwise, then they definitely need to be “SACKED” lol

I love the transparency in your posts and the way you share the knowledge instead of hoarding it. Yes, part of it can be due to business reasons like getting leads, traffic etc., just like you’ve stated. But, I am more in by the Human You in these posts…which is your genuine desire to share and educate.

Another way to think about it is to consider doing search marketing part time, at first. It may prove to be a lucrative second income if you already have a job. One of the biggest factors in running your own business is the risk, and having a steady income reduces this risk significantly. It also means you can start slow and build up without the pressure of having to hit regular targets. The disadvantage is that you don’t have as much time to devote to it, and working two jobs might tire you out to the point you’re not doing both well. You’re also unlikely to be available to clients during business hours when they need you.

This method has the power to bring you in new clients every month without even having to lift a finger to get them. The basic premise of a referral program is that you pay individuals (in this case business owners or employees) a certain commission for referring new clients to you who buy a product or service you provide. This is also known online more commonly as an affiliate program.

I think it’s better to start with local clients. You can pick them up more quickly via networking meetings or just by happenstance. In fact, my first client was my Mercedes repair shop when I needed my car serviced. We started talking about internet marketing, and it was on from there.

Perhaps the best piece of advice is to dive in. A lot about running your own business isn’t knowable until you do it. so if one of your new years resolutions was to quit the day job and strike out on your own, then go for it!

Split your goals into short term, medium term and long term. Where do you see yourself in five years time? How about this time next year? In the case of search marketing, who knows if it will be around in five years time, and if so, in what form?

It’s also important to get your business’s name, address and phone number (NAP) on the major citation data aggregators like Infogroup, Neustar (aka Localeze), Acxiom and Factual. Always make sure that your company’s NAP is consistent on as many of these directories and citation sites as possible. Discrepancies like misspellings, abbreviations, lack of suite number and wrong phone number can create havoc when Google can’t determine which information about your business is correct. If Google’s not sure, they may display incorrect information — or not show your business at all in search results.

While by no means an exhaustive list, I think if SEO newbies can master these three areas, they will be well on their way to success in search engine optimization and many other disciplines in the digital marketing industry.
You might also find that doing it part-time and maintaining a “day” job is a really good fit emotionally and financially. If Google blindly swings an ax, and you get hit, you can rest assured that the sun will still come up tomorrow and will that direct deposit on Friday 🙂
Once you hit that growth stage, what really matters is making success repeatable. This means blogging with consistency, meeting new agencies to partner with consistently, and following up with existing customers to gain an understanding of their satisfaction consistently too. It sure takes a lot of work but if you love what you do (and I definitely do) it pays off in spades.
