The advice in the book is of course contingent on having a firm grasp of SEO, and I wouldn’t advise starting an SEO business unless you know what you’re doing. It can be a legal nightmare if you aren’t careful.
Let me start this section by clarifying that I am not a lawyer. If any of this seems like legal advise, it’s not. I’m just telling you my personal experience and preference with SEO contracts. Since 2003, I’ve used about five or six different SEO contracts. In that time, my SEO contracts grew and grew in length until they were about 30 pages. Then, about two years before I sold my SEO company, I threw my giant, colossal, and scary SEO contract in the garbage and started a fresh one, one more time. But this time I did it on my own. No lawyers. No outside advice. I just went with my gut.
I am sharing this tutorial for computer Engineering students because starting a SEO consulting business is an excellent option for Computer Software Engineers. The #1 lesson that took me years to understand is that client retention is way more important than client acquisition. I used to dedicate so much of my time into deploying all types of marketing efforts to acquire new business, while giving my existing customers less than 20% of my time. Today, I do the exact opposite and give my existing clients over 80% of my time. Not only did this raise client satisfaction and retention, but it increased the amount of incoming leads through referrals and “word of mouth”.
Optimizely is an A/B testing tool that businesses can use to better their websites. A/B testing is a method used by digital marketers and web designers to analyze two types of a webpages, landing pages or websites and determine which one is better received using live analytics. Even if it’s a subtle change, like adjusted colors or differing design elements, A/B testing can provide worthwhile insights. Optimizely plans start at $17 per month.
I spoke at local places and those have gotten me a ton of leads and clients, I believe I e-mailed you about that once. Speaking is definitely the best thing to get business, build credibility, and networking. I’ve never been to and SEO conference, but I can imagine how a non-SEO conference would be better to get leads.
The other good aspect of this is that you will have the upper hand as being in the newspaper portrayed as the local SEO expert will instil trust in these business owners and make it easier for you to convert them to paying clients.
Once you grow a little bit you’re going to want to hire account managers. These are the people who work directly with your clients, making sure the work gets done and properly reported. It’s important that these people aren’t just given a salary. Like sales people, and everyone else in your office, they should be incentivized with commission and bonuses when they re-sign an existing client. Incentivizing account managers subconsciously pushes them to go above and beyond making your clients happy.
It’s important that you get your business listed correctly and consistently on top online business directories, like Yelp, Merchant Circle, Citysearch and others. You will also want to seek out respectable local directories to get your business listed on. Check with your local newspaper’s website and your Chamber of Commerce to see if they have a local business directory you can get listed on. You can also do a search for keywords like “[your city] directory” to find other local citation sites or directories.
Take time to price your services, or mention your price when a client contacts you. Pricing your services at the higher cost at the start of the business is the bad practice as the customer will not show any interest in your services, so try to lower the rate. After your work is appreciated, you will get a brand name in society; then you can charge higher rates if required.
There are also a ton of emerging metadata schemas out there – Open Graph, Twitter Card, Google-specific (Authorship, etc.), Schema.org, and others. Best practice is to build this front-end metadata into your templates where appropriate and have them pull the right attributes from the database or have your writers enter the values into the CMS at the point of content creation.
