If your goals align more closely with a job i.e. a regular income and a regular time schedule, then you might decide that getting a job with an employer will suit you best. If you value autonomy, then running your own business might suit you better.
But only you will know when the time is right and I strongly urge you keep your clients business interests top priority throughout the entire SEO campaign. This will certainly keep you in business far longer than trying to manipulate an algorithm which is catching up to these short lived tactics all the time.
I personally recommend you to not implement or practice SEO only on client sites but also create your own site, build links, rank your keywords higher, attract huge traffic and try to implement all new strategies that strike your mind.
