Make sure they push their content on Google+, LinkedIn, wherever it’s relevant. The idea is to do content marketing, not content creation. If a particular writer gets a lot of inbound links or tweets, let them know rewards will follow.
As simple as it may sound, but a lot of those strengths and weaknesses are not immediately clear and only become clear with experience and time and trying various things, which can take some years. Also, opportunities based on your strengths may not be readily available, so one needs to put focused effort in that direction. For ex., I have realized by now that there are some things I am really good at, they come natural to me (to the point that I was taking them for granted), and they happen to be difficult for a lot of people/competitors. So I am now trying to focus on that.
What you need to do first is join some LinkedIn groups. The sorts of groups you want to target are the groups that are going to be full of business owners in your area. So look for your chamber of commerce group, entrepreneurs in your city groups, business owners in your city groups etc (you get the gist).
See when you first started your SEO agency. What kind of tactics did you use? I know you can use white-hat SEO and with strong content you can climb to #1 and for black-hat SEO is basically spam. What am trying to say is when you first joined “Elpac” and started to do SEO for them, did you just basically spam your way to the top because I know back in 2012/2013 you could climb your way to the top by just simply spamming your keywords – manually build backlinks use tools. I know the algorithms always change and every time it gets harder. See what would you do? SPAM your way to the top or do it the legit away? (I don’t even think there is a legit way and there’s only one way). What would you say to a beginner what kind of tactics should I do? Am not asking to give up your secret.
In this guide I will be teaching you how to start an SEO business. I currently own a local SEO company myself and have been running it since 2009 with good success. By the end of this guide you will have all the tools and know how to go ahead and start your very own local SEO business, all you will need to do is read this tutorial and take action.
I strongly affirm that you must have at least 2-4 years’ experience (MINIMUM) commercially working for an agency to learn the procedures at hand. SEO is a complicated, yet easy to understand process from the surface.
Pricing is alway a tricky topic to discuss because everyone tends to price their SEO services a little different. Pricing is based on experience and industry standards. Since there is no turn key solution, pricing tends to fluctuate a lot in the SEO industry. It’s not like buying a printer or a car, so you have to be very strategic in order to get business. It’s also not an industry where the lowest bid wins the client. There are many factors that come in to play.
What other forms of advertising/marketing do they currently use?: This question is a good one for a few reasons. Firstly because it gives you an idea of the sort of money the business owner is already spending on advertising. Secondly, once the business owner has revealed what advertising they currently pay for, you can ask them if they are happy with the response they are getting from that advertising. In most cases you will find that the answer to that question is that they simply don’t know. This is where you can explain how they can track exactly how many more targeted visitors they will get to their website through your SEO efforts.
Learning how to do SEO on websites properly takes years to master, and on top of that you also have to keep up to date with what is an industry that is ever changing, literally on a daily basis! The thing you have in your favour though is that there are companies out there that actually provide the technical SEO services for clients that you can simply resell.
Thanks for the great post! I also your recent one with the site review sample for your website. Do you have any sample proposals that indicate all of the ideas you talked about? It’s hard for me to visualize this for some reason and I think it would be super helpful. Thanks for your time!
In addition, another key component which you’ve also heard many times before is the importance of having a mobile-optimized site. What’s the point of increasing your rankings in local search results when your website isn’t accessible on-the-go, when users and potential customers actually need to access information. In fact, 73% of mobile search triggers additional action and conversion like:
Wonderful post Gary. I started a small web design company a few years ago and only recently started offering SEO services also. There are many small businesses that simply have no idea where to begin let alone have the time to learn about it. Inspirational post thanks.
At any rate – thanks for creating an (otherwise) fawsome quick SEO Page Auditor Tool for lil Freelance SEOs like me! Overall, MySiteAuditor.com really performs quite well and I haven’t come across a compeitive reporting tool that can also beat the economical pricepoint of MySiteAuditor! Excited to be upgrading to Pro here in a matter of weeks… Much appreciated and thanks again!
I think it would work as it builds trust. If you find that it is hurting you, you can then start blocking some of it off and creating paywalls. But overall giving away the farm really helps build trust and loyalty. I’ve found that it causes more people willing to open up their wallets.
One emerging element of technical SEO is the creation of open data sets or APIs. If your business will thrive by getting your inventory or content into as many places as possible, consider creating data feeds or APIs for third-party developers to use.
I hope I haven’t over complicated this question and answer example here because it is actually a simple but VERY effective way to persuade a prospect to sign on the dotted line. It’s the old ‘Comparing apples to oranges’ analogy but it works wonders with making business owners adjust their mindset, it works very well to negate what the price you are charging is as it’s regardless as long as they are going to be making a good return on their investment.
I’m so glad you wrote this. I’m in the process of starting my agency and have thought about each of these points along the way. My biggest worry was taxes, so I’m glad you included that part. Thanks for all the value!
So my first bit of advice is to pick a niche. Decide what type of SEO you are. Are you a consultant? A strategist? A link acquisition expert? Content marketer? All of these things come under the SEO banner.
If you have some experience with search engine optimisation and would like to start your own SEO company, then this article will make for an interesting read. Here, you will get detailed coverage of how you get set up and enjoy a profitable SEO business in just 4 steps.
The advice in the book is of course contingent on having a firm grasp of SEO, and I wouldn’t advise starting an SEO business unless you know what you’re doing. It can be a legal nightmare if you aren’t careful.
Not to fret, this is the first of a series of posts outlining how your business can be optimized for local search engine marketing. As a subset of a broader SEO marketing practices, basic local SEO encompasses the following three factors:
Having a consistent sales pipeline in place is essential for the growth of your agency. I always tended to focus more upon the fulfilment side of the equation as I have a high customer service expectation for our team, but the lack of sales pipeline was hampering our growth. Now I’d like to think we’re developing a balance between the two.
Making sure your solutions and product offerings are scalable. There are certain things that worked as an “employee” that simply don’t translate well when trying to open up your services to multiple companies.
Finding clients’ is just one phase of the game, educating clients is a different ball game entirely. There is a high probability that most of your clients will be small business owners that have neither heard of the word “SEO”, nor know how it works.
Note: This clause shouldn’t be mandatory. Let your customers remove it if they want. However, many won’t care. You can also use it as leverage. If you’re having a ton of success with a client, offer free or discounted services if you can add your link to their site.
Google wants you to use structured data markup because it helps their spiders better determine what your site content is about. Google even offers a Structured Data Testing Tool so you can check to see if your markup is properly implemented.
What creating any SEO business, it’s vital that you start with developing your personal brand. The first thing I would recommend is to decide who you want to be in this industry and how you want to differentiate yourself.
Another thing to think about if you’re cash rich but time poor, especially with many people leaving the SEO game, is to buy an existing SEO business. You’re buying existing contracts and/or a client list, and you may be able to pick up some skilled employees, too. Buying a business is a topic in itself and outside the scope of this article, however it’s an avenue to think about especially if you are capital rich and time poor. You may be able to manage such a business part time, as you have less pressure to develop new business from scratch and the existing employees can handle the work at the coal face and deal with clients during the day.
