Donna, yours are excellent additions to this post. My post, as lengthy as it was, really only scratched the surface of the topic. I totally agree with you — staying current is one of the hardest parts of the job. You could easily spend 8 hours a day reading blogs, Twitter feeds, and industry news, keeping up-to-date, but getting no work done at all. And knowing about which top-notch tools to use is an indispensable part of our work. Frankly, I am really excited about the new free SEO tools we are releasing here at IM Ninjas. Be sure to bookmark http://www.internetmarketingninjas.com/tools/ in your browser as I have. Thanks much for the contribution, Donna!
In light of all the recent hubbub about JC Penney, David at Distilled wrote up a great post asking whether competitors can use spammy links to harm your site. He explains how to find shady links and get them removed.
To better understand the importance of listings and citations (a concept I’ll explain below), let’s look at the motives and experiences of two very important variables: the search engine and the consumer.
What we found was that quite often the contract in question would be given to someone who has done a really fluffy, shiny, glossy, visually lovely proposal in comparison to ours. More often than not the proposals said very little and we would have to read between the lines to work out what the agency said they would do for the customer.
The first website I ever started was a job board called Advice Monkey. I was trying to get the website ranked for terms like “job search” and “tech jobs”. I hired a few SEO agencies to help me out, but none provided any results. After tens of thousands of dollars down the drain, I had no more money and no choice but to learn how to optimize Advice Monkey for search engines… all on my own.
Speaking of price…You’ll also have a better idea as to how much your work is actually worth (what to charge) once you understand first-hand what it takes to successfully create and implement a strategy.
Wow, Awesome post! So much stuff here . . . I’m starting a freelance web development business and this will be invaluable information. The downside is that unless you’re diversified, your income could dry up overnight if Google decides to flick their tail in your direction. And to be truly diversified, you need diversification across markets AND strategies. Without that, there is a good chance you’ll then have to start from scratch at some point. Algorithm shifts tend to be great for consultants with deeper levels of client engagement, as the change can create new demand for their consultancy services. For consultants who sell low margin consulting across a large number of clients, the algorithmic updates can actually be worse than they are for affiliates, because you may suddenly have a lot of angry customers all at once & unlike an affiliate who prioritizes a couple key projects while ignoring many others, it is not practical to ignore most clients when things go astray. To each & every client their project is the most important thing you are working on, & rightfully so.
Flag.io (This is an analytics tool that optimises your local search presence by distributing listings across more than 100 local search directories. It also enhances the content it lists – it displays a lot more information than typical search directories, and is way more compelling. According to statistics, 50% of consumers will visit the physical location of a business within 24 hours of a local search, and at least 18% will convert to revenue)
With that established, what you would need to do before you go to the meeting with your client is look at the amount of keywords you have researched for them and then look at the various costs that the SEO reseller company are charging for the amount of keywords to optimise.

The competition in the SEO industry is very stiff and one of the factors responsible for the high competitiveness is the low entry barrier. Anybody can wake up and claim to be an SEO expert, this is why there are a lot of charlatans in the industry.
Great information. When I got started with SEO I don’t think it had a name. I realized that the yellow pages were no longer worth paying for and had to keep my site being seen. Learning the process was just part of keeping my business alive.
This article legitimately falls into the category of webspam because it uses a subject and a page name to target an important keyword then presents an article about the woes of being self-employed. And forgive me, but the several subjects broken in this article are not “news.” The material is common sense.
One of the biggest transitions from a regular job to running your own business, if you’re not used to working in sales, is that you will need to negotiate deals. Those working 9-5, especially in technical roles, don’t tend to negotiate directly, at least not with prospective clients and suppliers.

This is always the question on every potential client’s lips and I always give the same/similar answer; most cases what happens is that you will start to see positive signs after 3 months, then page 1 listings within 4-6 months, top 3 listings within 6-9 months and number 1 listings within 12 months.
Hi Neil, again, I have found you and your articles to be very awe-inspiring! Like many others who have contributed to this article (as comments), I too, want to get started in SEO and was wondering how to go about it.
Recent changes to search engines’ algorithms have made very easy to overdo on-site optimization, but backlinks remain very important for raising a site’s position in the SERPs. And good backlinking is hard. I read an article by Todd McDonald recently that likened it to being beaten up – long, painful and frustrating!
The title tag of a page is the main text that describes an online document and remains one of the strongest SEO signals that a webmaster has complete control over. Moreover, it is the first interaction your site is having with a searcher and possibly the only thing they’ll read before deciding whether or not your site will answer their query effectively.
You can sell some specialized SEO services, such as citation building or reputation management for under $1,000/mo, but the problem is that the sub $1k/mo fee range is where most of the SEO snake oil is sold.
