The most important aspect of your Yellow Pages ad is the copy; get this right and you can make a very healthy ROI but get it wrong and you’ll end up haemorrhaging money on it. One of the best books I’ve read about getting your print advertising spot on is Ca$hvertising.
We will understand these three factors but before let’s look at the stats shared by MOZ – as per MOZ survey “ 4 billion desktop queries in United States are about local businesses, products or services”.
It’s essential to have a plan, just as you need directions to get to a travel destination. You could wing it without a map, and you might arrive in your destination, but chances are you won’t. You’ll most likely get lost. A business plan helps you assess where you are, and remind you where you’re going.
According to the 2015 Form Conversion Report by Formstack, only about 1% of small contact forms (about 4 fields) get filled out on websites. That means only 1 out of 100 people that visit your SEO company’s website will fill out your contact form. The other 99 will leave your website and probably never contact you for SEO services. This is a huge problem. So many potential clients who need SEO visit and leave your site forever, never having contacted you. You need a way to get way more of your visitors, and potential customers, to give you their contact information when visiting your website. As I pointed out earlier, relying on your contact form isn’t good enough.
Discrete content elements – web pages, images, PDFs, videos, social profiles and brand pages, local listings, and off-site (reviews) pages all require on-page optimization. This means knowing the target keyphrase for the content and getting it into the right places – the title, description, copy, etc.
Starting an SEO agency from scratch is probably the most difficult. The startup costs are pretty low, because all you really need is a website and a way to fulfill services. Setting up is easy, but getting clients is tough. Trying to get organic visibility for SEO services will be tough because you will be competing with SEO agencies that have been doing it for years. These agencies will have a track record, organic rankings and testimonials.
Another wonderfully written and descriptive post Neil! As usual you laid everything out and like you mention people are lazy so half of us wont bother to do as you say. Hey don’t forget to go meet the guy for lunch that got you started!
I own a product photography business and i’m getting ready to start a huge content marketing push. I’ve been following your blog for the last 2 years and this article stuck in my head. I’ve noticed that in my keyword research that ‘how to’ photograph it yourself keywords make up a huge portion of the traffic looking for our primary keyword term “product photography”.
But I also made mistakes like getting a Google penalty from hiring a bad link builder. My goal is to show you how to start a local SEO business while avoiding the mistakes I made. I will provide you with an SEO audit template, freelancers and local SEO firms to hire, and tools. It took me years to get this down so I hope you find it helpful.
Organic Links – These are links you don’t have to ask for, and they are the best kind. Especially if you can get them on sites with high authority such as major news outlets and other well-recognized name websites.
Here’s a critical piece of advice. Always stay a student of the SEO industry. Read blogs, case studies, and everything the big search engines like Google release. So many people stop studying after a couple years. They think they know it all. Those same people soon go out of business. Here are a few good resources to stay educated.
SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization and it refers to a technique in Internet marketing that helps websites reach higher ranks both in organic and in paid online searches. This domain is quite a dynamic one, so things change pretty fast.

The nice thing about these businesses is you can “moonlight” and build out a stream of revenue without quitting an existing job, and start to get a sense for where additional clients / revenue will come from once you’re full time and building a business.
He lives in the US, is self-employed, and has a family. The American dream right? For he and his wife to have a second child, they would need to get a group health plan at least 60 days prior to the wife becoming pregnant. Say that everything works out to be on-time, they are looking about an increased cost of about 20-25k over the course of a 9 month period to have a child in the United States!
Thanks for sharing this Neil. I’m curious to know how you do SEO differently for a 10k+/month client as for a 3k client. Is it just more hours spent? More money spent on designers and programmers? Thanks for the inspirational post!
And this explains why the demand for SEO services and experts is on the increase. If you have a good knowledge of SEO, you can make a lot of profit by starting a local SEO, which would cater to the SEO needs of individuals and businesses within your city, state, or country.
Google is the most used search engine on the internet – it is the dominant search service among consumers. It has a major impact on SEO strategy when its algorithm changes. Google also provides a bunch of helpful services so you can collect and analyze data about your website and its performance. All these tools are free.
Absolutely fantastic post, excellent information, exactly the information I was looking for. I got interested in seo when promoting an old business. We got stung by a very poor company. I have been learning a bit about seo and started to get some page one ranks. I would love to set up an seo company to help others.
Follow industry leaders on Twitter, rack up endorsements on LinkedIn, build up your circles on Google+, and, most importantly, start creating content that solves the problems of your target audience on your website.
The gist of this means that, as an SEO candidate, you won’t likely ever be well-versed in all aspects of the business (especially since it changes and grows so quickly!). A successful career strategy is to become an expert in one thing and conversant in many more. That will help make you more marketable in this career field.
You would think this goes without saying, but you’d be surprised to know how many people want to start a SEO consulting business without knowing SEO that well. It takes a couple of years of working with websites, analyzing web traffic and writing articles in order to become proficient in SEO. There are some basic skills you should already have, such as identifying and analyzing keywords, writing quality content, using Google Analytics or other similar analytic programs, writing meta tags and meta descriptions etc.
But let’s say you’ve figured out how to rank well. Your skills are valuable, because top ten rankings are valuable. Another bonus, given Google is making life more difficult, is that it creates a barrier to entry. There will be less threat from newcomers who have just bought a book on How To SEO.
You’ve probably been asked “how do you go about SEO?” I start by telling clients I follow Google’s local search ranking factors to make sure their core SEO elements are in place (people love that). You can break this down into Google My Business, citations, reviews, and geo-targeted landing pages (on-page SEO). Then I ask them a couple questions about whether they need help in these areas. I’d say 80% of people end up working with me when I use this sales approach.
Sure I can advertise other places…but I can’t reach Google’s customers there. As an individual I can choose to use another search engine, but as a business I cannot magically make potential customers do the same. I HAVE to use Google or give up a huge market share.
Online reviews- reviews play very important role in decision making for a user. In today’s marketplace user has many options to choose from. in such situation users generally go with the other consumers reviews. 52% consumers say that positive reviews about a business make them user its services. Reviews also make your website more visible in search results. Reviews on your website show how users are engaged on your website. While your link builders are working on your first client’s sites, you are out learning as much about SEO as your brain can handle. Read forums, e-books, blogs, books, anything and everything you can get your hands on. If you take this seriously and are fairly tech-savvy you should be able to get up to speed within 6 months. Of course you are going to need to start practicing on sites and getting your feet wet. Take a smaller one-off deal and see what you can do with the knowledge you’ve picked up. That will build confidence and you can move on to more complex tasks.
While this post is not supposed to be a comprehensive guide on how to set up a local SEO service, I hope you have gotten all the basic information you need on how to get started. Consult other online resources for more information on each step involved.
“Research shows that 82% of new customers research a business online before making a purchase decision. Do you know where your business is in the Google rankings for your targeted keywords?” – This stat brings home just how important it is for the business to be prominent in the search engines. It also shows the prospective client that you have done your homework and know what you’re doing which will go some way to help you increase your authority figure status in the industry. You can enlighten the business owner with a printout of exactly where they currently rank for all the keywords you have researched for them by using the ranking tracker tool in Market Samurai or SEO Power Suite.
“What is the lifetime value of every new customer/client you gain?” – This can be a brilliant question as if they do know the exact number then you can then look at the potential monthly search volume for all keywords and say something like; “Well, once we’ve got your website to number 1 for all these keywords, you will be receiving around 40% of the total number of people searching which would be around [X amount] new visitors every month. Even if you only converted 1% of these new prospects in to new customers/clients, you’ll still have gained [X amount] new customers/clients. Based on the lifetime value of each new customer/client you get, that should be new customers/clients every month you will be gaining which have a lifetime value to the tune of [X amount]… And that’s not even including the future customers/clients they will recommend through word of mouth!”. One thing about this example is that you need to have proficient arithmetic skills, if you don’t then just take a calculator with you to meetings. If the business owner doesn’t know how much the lifetime vale of each customer/client is, then still do the calculation of visitors versus a 1% conversion rate and present them with the final number that way, it’ll still be effective.
Be prepared to get slammed and inundated with tools and software in this industry. They are everywhere. Hopefully I can save you some time and energy by listing all the tools I used while running my SEO business.
My personal preference is to keep my team small and service a limited number of clients, well, because I want to work on more of my own stuff (and family stuff) rather than put more time into building a bigger team and managing them.
