If you are new to the profession altogether and need to learn SEO, two courses to consider are DistilledU and the Google Analytics Individual Qualification. Completing both certifications should take under 90 hours.

As mentioned earlier, starting your own SEO business online needs very low initial investment. All you need is a computer and some reliable connectivity. It is neither capital-intensive nor labor-intensive.
Additionally, many social media platforms, like Hootsuite and Tiny Torch, allow you to monitor and get alerts any time your brand is mentioned. Whenever a review is left about your business, positive or negative, be sure to respond to it. That shows other people reading the reviews that you, the business owner, care what your customers think.
Thank you, Kifeda! I hope it’s enough as well, but you know, there’s never enough information — I learn more everyday in this business. And that’s one of the things I like best. I look up and see the sky — a near infinite world of knowledge yet to be explored. But let’s try. Thanks for reading!
In that time, our sales revenue has increased almost five-fold as a result of work we did two years ago. To maintain the results you achieve through solid SEO, you must continue to demonstrate the relevance and quality of your site.
I have been constantly improving that audit throughout the last 4 years of doing full-time SEO consulting. You should find it super helpful and can tweak it however you like. I would charge $500 for a micro audit (8 pages) and $900 for a full audit (15 pages). This is a simple pricing structure and will be affordable for any serious client.
Ok, now you’ve got everything prepared and ready, it’s time for the actual meeting. Whatever you do, DON’T BE LATE! If anything, turn up 5 minutes early and just sit in the waiting area collecting your thoughts and running over in your head what you’re going to say in the meeting.
Secondly, and what is typically been the case for me in the past, if you start delivering these results quicker than the time frames you have set out, it makes the client even happier (think referrals and testimonials!).
By taking the above steps one at a time, your site will be poised for local SEO success. Plus, the beauty of organic search is that, once set up correctly, you can enter into tweak and maintenance mode. All of the work done to set up a site correctly is sustainable and will continue driving quality traffic to your site. May the search be with you!
The #1 lesson that took me years to understand is that client retention is way more important than client acquisition. I used to dedicate so much of my time into deploying all types of marketing efforts to acquire new business, while giving my existing customers less than 20% of my time. Today, I do the exact opposite and give my existing clients over 80% of my time. Not only did this raise client satisfaction and retention, but it increased the amount of incoming leads through referrals and “word of mouth”.
At first glance, the skills you will need to learn might appear tedious and complicated, but the good news is that there are a variety of sources on the internet where you can quickly and easily learn them.
When I first started my agency it was just me and many VAs. I outsourced everything and paid stupid amounts of money for link placement. Some of these vendors scammed me and many of the link placements sucked or got removed.
The nice thing about these businesses is you can “moonlight” and build out a stream of revenue without quitting an existing job, and start to get a sense for where additional clients / revenue will come from once you’re full time and building a business.
Interesting article! Although I know quite a bit about SEO, I don’t think I would ever want to start an SEO company. One reason is that some shady SEO companies are ruining it for everyone by sending out mass spam emails. Check your spam box – probably 50 from people selling male enhancement products and 10 from SEO services claiming to make your traffic skyrocket. These emails leave a bad taste in people’s mouths. Another reason is that Google keeps changing their ranking algo. This will most likely lead to unhappy customers is they get deindexed or slapped in the rankings regardless of whether it is your fault or not.
It’s important to outsource as much as you can but do not put all of your eggs in one basket so that if one person quits your whole process doesn’t fall apart. Also, marketing and building your list from the very beginning – don’t rely only on referrals because eventually you will need more revenue sources if you want to continue to grow.
The other thing that is absurd about banning your AdWords account for something that happened almost a decade ago is that people change over time. You may have been advertising something that was wholesome that later became sleazy (maybe after a change of ownership). Or you may have been working on a client project where the domain and site were later sold & became sleazy. Google wants a lifelong ban based on them changing their guidelines after the fact & applying them to you (even though you may not even be associated with the businesses they look down upon). There was also a report of a rogue employee doing spammy crap on the side & then coming into the company office and logging into Google, thus getting the company account torched as well. So you can have ex post facto stuff applied to anything you may have glancing experience with a decade ago & they can buy sites violating their own guidelines & all is well.
