If a search engine does not know in what city or district you provide your services, it will not rank your site in top 10 on the local search query, so your potential client will probably not find you.
The one thing to keep in mind is that my agency actually provided results. From getting companies to rank in the top three results for terms like “credit cards” and “life insurance” to helping boost their sales, we provided a positive return on investment. If you do everything I mentioned above but fail to provide results as an SEO agency, you won’t be in business for long.
I’m glad that you like my guest post.. I agree, SEO business is fragile for most people. It takes a lot of experience, valid research, and tons of patience to succeed in SEO. But since these updates can be reverse-engineered, big companies can still pull out their big guns and continue their services.

Recent changes to search engines’ algorithms have made very easy to overdo on-site optimization, but backlinks remain very important for raising a site’s position in the SERPs. And good backlinking is hard. I read an article by Todd McDonald recently that likened it to being beaten up – long, painful and frustrating!
I am thinking with an agency, if someone charges 1k a month on a retainer (I know you charge more but I’m using that as an example) and gets 10 clients that’s 10k a month… but with an authority site some people are earning the same amount.
You then decide you’d like a 100% mark up on this deal so you get your client to pay you £500 (~US$800) per month for the SEO services on the 10 keywords every month. So you end up profiting to the tune of £250 (~US$400) per month for the duration of that deal.

“SEO isn’t the future, it’s the present. Anyone not doing this is already behind” – This is a favourite of mine. It is an absolutely true statement and also acts to instil a sense of urgency and fear in the client as if they do not act now they risk falling even further behind to their competitors.
Keep in mind that is easy to rank for a unique brand name. If it’s unique, it tends to be memorable. So my two cents for anyone in a crowded industry is to go for the unique over the generic and descriptive. You can also tack on a byline to the end of your name to remove any uncertainty.

Thank you Neil, this post is full of nuggets! We will take what we are not doing now and change. One question, what’s your advice on signed agreements with Clients? Is 30 day, mth to mth good? On one hand you don’t want to make people feel trapped and on the other you don’t want them to quit on a whim without at least being with you for 6-12mths. Is the industry standard of 1-2yr good enough? What’s a good balance between sustainable revenue for agency, and good commitment & partnership between an agency and a Client?
