After a few months of me working with Elpac, their rankings shot up to number one on Google for terms like “power supplies”. They were so happy, they introduced me to other companies they knew. Within months, I was pulling in around $20,000 a month from SEO consulting.

Quite a few people have asked me how to raise capital to start a new business. My response is always, “what for?” They usually have a blank look on their face when I ask that. The reason they often look perplexed is that most people just think you need to raise capital to start a business. We refer to those people as “wantrepreneurs”, not entrepreneurs. Don’t fall for this excuse.

I really like the idea of setting out exactly what is wrong with a client’s approach and the process they need to take to improve, it really helps to show the value in the SEO service delivered, and backing this up with real life data that demonstrates the cash value to their business is the clincher.

In reality, it’s likely to be somewhere in the middle at first, however be wary of going in too low. A low price often means low quality so be sure you set a price point which reflects the level of service and quality which you’re offering!

Excellent, thanks for the reply. Next week I will attend begin attending paid digital marketing seminars and will try to network with experienced executives from the region as much as possible, as per your advice in the article and maybe will ask for internship or something like that. Will let you know how that goes. 🙂

Thanks for your advice. I request to provide your suggestions for choosing the best agency for SEO. I started a blog “http://www.bestsmartphoneunder.com/” and looking for the best agency to make my keywords rank and to increase the count of my site visitors. As I’m new to industry, I want not much aware of choosing the agency. So please help me out.

Many of these are interrelated disciplines. For example, PPC advertising is now growing to cover paid ads in Facebook, the ultimate social media venue. PPC requires effective keyword development, as do many SEO disciplines. Social media marketing often ties in with local and mobile search. Analytics can now be done with Facebook pages as well as with websites and PPC campaigns.

One emerging element of technical SEO is the creation of open data sets or APIs. If your business will thrive by getting your inventory or content into as many places as possible, consider creating data feeds or APIs for third-party developers to use.

Thanks Neil for this article, as old as it is, it is still relevant. Selling is not my field of expertise, but it’s becoming so. I am a marketer from way back so I do believe that SEO works and is really important.

From reading sites like Search Engine Watch and SEObook, I started getting the hang of SEO. I made on-page changes to my own site, and learned how to build links by talking to people like Patrick Gavin on a weekly basis.

Any tips on how best to nurture a link from a supplier/partner/non-competing business, WITHOUT having to give a reciprocal link back, which I understand to be a poor strategy in SEO, but sadly seems to be the only currency “some website owners” understand?

So if you are going to get and keep your clients loyal, then you must do a good job educating them about the importance / benefits of SEO to their business. You will also need to teach them how to measure their SEO results and growth. Thereby making them understand what you are doing and appreciate your efforts. However, this will cost you not just money but also time.

If you’re going to be a one-person consulting company in the beginning, I would recommend getting some real-world experience under your belt before making a promises to prospective clients that might be difficult to keep. Until then, you could always hire a great team while you bring in the clients.

Scott, I think that price range is realistic. You really have to show them the value proposition you are offering them. Back it up with case studies and your past work. Shoot me an email so we can discuss some options. neil@neilpatel.com

1. Understand all on-page and off-page SEO optimization techniques. You must be able to properly perform an SEO audit, keyword research, competitive analysis, and know how to get quality links quickly.

Things to be taken care of with local SEO: The similarity in the contents. This can make the monotony in the mind of the user, and this can lead to the filtering out of the search on Google. There are times when a particular website can have almost content similar to the older ones, and this can lead to Google penalizing the website.

Create a local resource from public data (here’s 30 different data sources) and reach out to local press to get coverage. That’s exactly what Krystian Szastok did and he got some amazing results (you really should read this case study).

Email Marketing… is by far the most cost-effective solution to this problem, so flex some brains and come up with an offer that will let your business stand out from the crowd. Your average client is very busy and cares about nothing but ROI, period. Short and sweet is the best way to go… if you can’t inbox well, better find somebody who can.

Love this very inspirational, I plan on building out my site as an seo/ webdesign blog, then using it as leverage to get a job for a bigger agency. Hopefully all the benefits of being an seo without the responsibility of being an business owner.

Creating quality content for your website can be a huge investment, but it is worth it. Search engines will love it, and visitors will love it so much that they will share it on social media, leading to even more visitors. You can start out by simply creating blog posts on your website, and as your audience grows, you can expand your content inventory to additional types of media. To learn more, see the Beginner’s Guide to Content Marketing.

The next step is to run some searches on Power Leads Pro X to harvest the details of all the printers, accountants, web designers and any other business that works on a business to business basis in your area. Once you have all the details of these businesses, first thing you should do is compose an email using the Power Leads Pro X mailing feature and send it out to every one of these businesses.

Nothing is more infuriating that being told your stuff isn’t good enough / lacks quality only to see Google pay someone else to steal it and wrap it in AdSense (talk about sleazy black hat business models – way to lead the category Google!)

The good news is you don’t have to guess! Google has a keyword planner tool that provides search volume for queries, as well as a suggestions feature to provide insight into different keyword variations. This is extremely useful when deciding whether “tacos” or with a tortilla folded around it” is searched for more frequently, as a search engine’s index treats the queries separately. Using these keywords naturally throughout your site builds relevancy and helps search engines understand what your site is about.

When I first started my agency it was just me and many VAs. I outsourced everything and paid stupid amounts of money for link placement. Some of these vendors scammed me and many of the link placements sucked or got removed.

This acts as a big number that they now have in their head and hopefully if you convince them well enough, they won’t want to drop any of the keywords you have proposed and will sign up to have you optimise their site for all of them.

You must remember that you will almost never leave a meeting with a business owner getting a straight ‘no’ answer. Even if for some reason they don’t want the service, they will usually just say the old ‘I’ll be in touch soon’ or ‘I need to discuss it with [INSERT RANDOM EMPLOYEE/PARTNER NAME] before we actually move forward with this’.

This is more of an open question to everyone – does anyone know of a more up-to-date version of the Jim Boykin table Neil linked to in the 2nd paragraph beneath “Be Results Driven” for click rate for top 10 search results? I’d love to use this strategy but I imagine these figures are much different nowadays.

Now, this is not to say that you shouldn’t promote / establish yourself online, just saying that even though this is a great long-term objective, it’s a generally poor and unreliable strategy to claim market share when you’re just starting out.

But if you treat that client poorly, not only will they stop paying you, but you’ll notice that the number of referrals you get on a regular basis will slowly start going down. For this reason, you have to have a clean reputation and be known for taking care of your clients even when you don’t think it makes sense to. By doing this, in the long run, you’ll continually gain new clients from referrals.

I am young SEO Consultant from Italy and I have recently started my website about seo consultancy. I am currently facing some difficulties at the moment as I only rank for a couple of keywords, but I was following your facebook live yesterday and I’ll try to follow some of your advices.

Please remember that you must take extra care of clients that come from your partners. If they’re unhappy, the first person they will complain to is your partner. That’s not good for future referrals.
If you gained nothing from this post then feel free to write your own better & deeper post. I hope some ignorant jackass then comments on it calling it deceptive spam because it didn’t precisely fit their opinion/needs/wants/desires.
Define the market you’re targeting. How big is it? What are the growth prospects? What is the market potential? How does your business fit into this market? What are your sales goals? What is your unique selling proposition?
Thank you very much for this article! I have a question. I coded my business’s website (this is the third iteration) and tried to optimize it for search through good content, keywords, titles, etc. I also update content regularly and post on Facebook. We are very successful in our search results. Now, I’d like to open a side business offering SEO to other small businesses. (Not sure of my specialty, though I am a writer and I enjoy finding good stories to tell others about.) My question is this: What do you do if you don’t have access to the code, or if the code is messy? Ideally, it seems that you’d want to start at the ground floor, designing a site that is easily optimized. What do you do when that’s not possible? What do you do for that business?
