Perhaps there are web design companies who can’t afford a full time SEO, but would like to offer the service to their clients. Get three or four of these agencies as “clients” and you’ll likely create one full time job for yourself. This is a particularly good model if you don’t like sales, or don’t have time to do a lot of sales work. The design agency will do the selling for you, and they already have a customer base to whom they can sell.

This is a huge business – what the hell is an SEO nowadays? In many ways SEO has become an umbrella term for online or digital marketing and many SEO’s will provide an overview of what the opportunities are online and how you can execute on them.

And if you are stupid enough to expect someone to write and frequently update an entire business plan for you publicly FOR FREE & guarantee success with it, let me know if there is some market instrument to bet against you, as I will gladly make that wager all day long.

The problem is that self-employment, especially if you’ve worked in the corporate world before, has all the allure of the pipe dreams sold in The 4 Hour Work Week (I guess Tim Ferris doesn’t count self-promotion as work, even though he does it about 100 hours a week 🙂 ).

Power Leads Pro X is a piece of software that automatically searches Google Maps listings for businesses in any niche that you specify using the business name. It can also gather businesses on a country, state or city level! If I decide I want to promote my services to lawyers in London for example, all I have to do is select London from the UK section of Power Leads Pro X, type in the keyword ‘Lawyers’ and hit the search button.

Most importantly, don’t put up fake reviews or pay others to do so! It has to come about organically, and users will be able to smell a rat. Doing so may result in penalisation by the search engine instead.

With this kind of investment and ongoing costs, seeking an SEO business for sale and going that route starts to make a lot of sense as an option.  When you buy an established SEO business, at least there is a local track record and (presumably) some existing SEO equity in the business.  In a franchise relationship, you are buying into the strength and recognition of the existing franchise brand – and with Internet marketing franchises, there aren’t any with strong brand recognition.  And if you’re not buying into a brand, then what are you paying for?

2,000 Words – Hardly anyone does this because they are super lazy or just don’t know that this simple strategy works like a charm. If you’re targeting “SEO Albany” on your your SEO services page, then make sure that page has at least 2,000+ well written words or more. As you can see, there is a direct correlation between having more words on a page and higher rankings in Google.

The #1 lesson that took me years to understand is that client retention is way more important than client acquisition. I used to dedicate so much of my time into deploying all types of marketing efforts to acquire new business, while giving my existing customers less than 20% of my time. Today, I do the exact opposite and give my existing clients over 80% of my time. Not only did this raise client satisfaction and retention, but it increased the amount of incoming leads through referrals and “word of mouth”.

Reaching out to related (but not competitive) businesses to see if they will link to you. A good way to do this is to see if the businesses you work with have link pages on their site for partners, vendors, suppliers, etc.

There are both advantages and disadvantages to each of the legal entities and therefore it is important that you speak with a lawyer or accountant to figure out the best structure for your specific needs.

I also only missed out on the first client because they were already finalising a deal with another SEO company for roughly the same price and felt obliged to go with them. I think looking back now after the experience I have gained, I could’ve also won that client’s custom too but that is all part of the learning curve I suppose.

Anything you can do at this point to instil fear and urgency in the client should be used, they must feel like if they don’t grab this opportunity now, they are going to be missing out and losing ground to their competitors (Which in reality is true).

    This is not for the faint of heart and comes with all types of stress points. It is highly rewarding to work for yourself and succeed in an innovative market — I believe the Pro’s outweigh the Con’s — but each person is unique and you need to be certain this is right for you. Go the part-time, side job approach at first to make sure you are mentally, physically & financially ready to fly solo and start your own SEO business. Good luck if you take the plunge!
    To begin with, you’ll want to capture any low-hanging fruit by getting in touch with your existing customer base and see if they’d be interested in leaving you a review. You could incentivize them for their time (maybe a discount, etc.).
    Think about it. The longer the contract the longer the decision process. Why make things complicated for your clients? Why make them think harder about whether or not they want to work with you. Again, I’m not an attorney, but shorter, simpler, and clearer contracts close way more deals.
    I am currently in the starting phase of starting a SEO Agency to escape my 9-5 boss after been working for almost 3 years now and be my own boss as you said. Going through this post, I realized I have also committed many mistakes that I shouldn’t had done. Thank you Nathan for sharing your experience.
