After around 20 minutes I return to the software which will have scraped the business name, address, phone number, email address, website URL and a whole host of other SEO and internet marketing related data for every single lawyer in London that has a Google Maps listing!
Lots of people want freebies, and I’ve been reluctant to give away too much…I will give clients a quick overview of their site/competitive environment as a way of justifying the need to hire an SEO agency; but I find that some have no intention of buying because they see this as a freebie and hope to get more freebies…I’m wondering how much one should ‘open the kimono’ during these early stages, and if one realizes that the company isn’t going to be a client, whether it is worthwhile to say: ‘Look, I’ll make you a deal, we’ll do x for you as a free service in return for allowing us to wear your logo on our site.’?
On-page SEO for local businesses conforms to some pretty old school SEO tactics. There’s quite a large weighting towards the on-page content in the local search listings, so it’s important that, where possible, you squeeze the most value out of your content.
This helps demonstrate your expert knowledge of a particular subject, and with the pubs distribution and syndication channels helps gets you (and your business) exposure and promotion at scale. And the only cost is your time.
Thanks for a great post here Kristi – it helped fill in some of the blanks for me. Also worth reminding myself that there’s not much point creating content with blogposts etc and then not bothering to take an extra few minutes to optimise internal links, and promote the content through social media channels at least. I think of SEO as being consistent with a series of small steps, rather than trying to do the ONE big thing!
Another thing to think about if you’re cash rich but time poor, especially with many people leaving the SEO game, is to buy an existing SEO business. You’re buying existing contracts and/or a client list, and you may be able to pick up some skilled employees, Buying a business is a topic in itself and outside the scope of this article, however it’s an avenue to think about especially if you are capital rich and time poor. You may be able to manage such a business part time, as you have less pressure to develop new business from scratch and the existing employees can handle the work at the coal face and deal with clients during the day.
There may be a lack of any specific qualifications so there is seemingly a low barrier to entry – you can’t do a PHD in search engine optimisation and even if you could it would be horribly out of date by the time you had finished it.
Have been account managing and selling SEO myself for 2yrs consider my knowledge to be quite High however wouldn’t be able to perform the SEO task on a customers site myself this can get rather complicated.
Even if someone is not a business owner, you never know when their boss, a colleague or friend may require services that you offer. That’s when giving them your business card can pay dividends days, weeks, months or even years down the line.

You may not be 100% happy with your business logo, products, unique value proposition etc… but just put something out there and go for it. Don’t wait for everything to be perfect before you launch because it never will be.
